Ketubah Inspiration

November 3rd, 2009 @ 4:40 pm by Miss Trail Mix

After I saw a beautiful Ketubah (Jewish marriage contract) posted by a reader on the boards, I clicked on the website to see who the artist was. Her name is Amy Kagin and her Ketubahs are works of art. I browsed through a bunch and while I loved them all, I managed to pick out a few that I felt particularly excited about. The first two reflect a more modern style of Judaica but the movement and colors are so pretty!

(Source)

The next two are more traditional, patterned ones. I love the blue and yellow one because it matches our color scheme. :)

(Source)

These last two are probably the least common types of Ketubahs and (typical), my favorites. The Amy Kagin flower tryptic is considered “mini”, which I like the idea of, aesthetically. It’s also cheaper (Hey, it’s a Jewish wedding, I’m ALWAYS thinking of cost-cutting ideas :). The other one I found on Ketubah.com (Does anyone else think it’s funny/random website name?). It’s definitely different but so pretty, and would go with a lot of different decor schemes. This sounds trivial, but it is something I would like to display all the time, so it is important to consider these things. Le tough decision!

(Ketubah.com, Amy Fagin)

These are just a few of the thousands of Ketubah options. First, I need to figure out the budget for ours before we make any decisions. But I’m curious, which one would you want to look at for the rest of your life, and why?

oohhh, they are all really beautiful … I like the first two the best, but they are all works of art and it definitely depends on your style as a couple. Makes me want one too, even though we’re not Jewish!

I really like the first two best — but I also like the one that matches your wedding colors! Honestly, she’s such a great artist that I’m sure you can’t go wrong no matter what you pick.

They’re all beautiful but I particularly love the first one

I, too, think they’re all beautiful. For some reason the first one feels more like something representing people joining their lives. It’s all the color blending and swirling, I think.

I like the first two best. I am also looking for my ketubah and it’s hard to find the right one - so many options! I’m glad you are sharing your planning of a Jewish ceremony here on the bee, but I think it would be better to not include stereotypes. After all, wedding planning is expensive for almost all brides. I look forward to seeing which one you choose!

I like the first one the best, but all of them are so lovely. I wasn’t inspired by most of the ketubahs on ketubah.com; thank goodness my sister-in-law offered to paint our ketubah for us! Have you looked at the modern ketubahs at http://www.newketubah.com? I was looking for a non-traditional ketubah, and really liked some of the options there.

@CarlyinVA: I appreciate your point, but Ms. TM was just kidding. Sometimes the best way of negating stereotypes is laughing at them.

The first one, definitely! I like the “movement” and color — it’s artful. It’s not outrageous and seems a nice departure from the more traditional styles.

I love them all! Picking a Ketubah was one of my hardest decisions. And we ended up going way over budget… like you said you have to look at it the rest of your life, and it’s a piece of art. We’re very happy with our decision!

And yep, there really is no way around it. Ketubah’s aren’t cheap.

I love the pomegranate one. I was just “Ketubah shopping” for my mom and step dad - they’re celebrating their ten year anniversary this weekend, and I wanted to surprise them with a new ketubah for their anniversary, as their first one was a Hallmark card. I found the wording, and my best friend did a beautiful papercut around the edge of it - I can’t wait to show them!

@CarlyinVA:
I sincerely apologize if I at all offended you with my bad joke.
I will make sure to be more careful with what I say in the future!

I totally am completely am in love with my ketubah. We had an artist design it. She meets with you, gets to know you and your husband, and designs your ketubah to be yours- totally and completely unique. Here’s her site in case you’re interested.

She was awesome- and worth every penny. We didn’t want one that someone else has…. but your choices above are so pretty. :)

Very nice choices. There are soooooooo many to pick from and I must admit, lots of not so pretty ones out there too. My fiance and I are having a custom one made through a seller on Etsy and soooooooooooooo thrilled we found her. They are super expensive, we plan on looking at it the rest our our lives, we want something we love. The idea of custom works for us!

we’re getting ours from newketubah.com. the traditional ketubahs are beautiful, but don’t quite fit our aesthetic.

I love 1 & 4! I checked out ketubah’s with my cousin before she got married & there was one that had a beautiful huge willow tree design. It was so gorgeous… I could have stared at it forever.

LOVE 1! It’s so interesting to look at as well as beautiful. Being Catholic, I am sadly uninformed about the meaning behind a Ketubah, but I love how the first one looks intertwined, much like I imagine married life will be. Great choices to choose from.

Be sure to Google search for ‘ketubah’ and visit more independent ketubah artists’ websites. There are a number of us full time professional artists, like Amy, who are creating contemporary ketubahs in many different styles and moods.

As Daniel pointed out, there are many of us professional ketubah artists to be found online. And for those of you who are not Jewish, YOU can have a ketubah too! I make a lot of wedding artworks for non-Jewish couples. Whether you call it a ketubah, a marriage covenant, or a wedding certificate, it’s a beautiful tradition for any wedding that will hang on your wall for the rest of your lives together.

I am definitely loving that first one - it’s so totally different and fun. Were we Jewish, I would be all over these!
