Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!
About Mrs. Lamb

Lamba-ramma-lux-tux

November 3rd, 2009 @ 5:40 pm by Mrs. Lamb

Do you know how sometimes, you’re at a ball game, and you really enjoy ball games, but at this ball game someone who doesn’t really like ball games is there? And that person spreads his misery so that you can’t enjoy it either? Or do you know how sometimes, you’re out shopping for something important to you, but someone who doesn’t care as much about that something important is there, too? And that person really just wants a Mrs. Fields cookie and to go home? And then you don’t end up buying what you wanted?

Lambster and I were living those scenarios at the MW Tuxedo Rentals at the Southpoint Mall the other week. Guess which lamb was in which role.

Anytux, the outing starting out poorly because, apparently, there are not one, but TWO MW Tux shops at the mall. I had made an appointment at one of them, but did not know which one, so we walked to the closest one, which happened to be the one where we did not have an appointment.

Since the Lambster didn’t really know what he wanted, I started in with my list of three looks that I wanted to see in person.

  1. Vest and tie.
  2. Vest, tie, and pocket square.
  3. Cummerbund and bow tie.

I was actually disappointed with the selection. I guess it’s really in right now to wear suits and the blogosphere has some really cool options. Men’s Warehouse has your good old standards, which we needed to go with for budgetary and geographical reasons. Still, I think he just kept trying on the same color vest with slightly varied patterns.

First off, the sales associate said that the guys should wear ivory shirts since my dress is ivory (since then I’ve read several bride’s experiences with ivory shirts here, here, and here). Then he suggested a champagne vest set, an ivory vest set, and a black vest set to start.

When my wooly counterpart tried on the champagne vest, I thought this would be the set we liked most. The color was nice and the pattern was subtle. Lamb lover was not thrilled with the fit of the ivory shirt though, as it was quite boxy and he prefers a slimmer line.

Here’s the ivory vest with the ivory bow tie. There is something about a man in a bow tie that I find irresistible. Lambchoperoo, unfortunately, finds bow ties completely resistible.

“Do you like it any better with a pocket square, honey?” I say. “Not really,” he says. Moving on.

Lamba-ramma-lux-tux : wedding menswear Tux4 Tux+4+-

Ivory vest, ivory tie, ivory pocket square, ivory shirt? Enough ivory for you? We think we like the champagne paisley that he tried on first with the ivory shirt and ivory pocket square. Good. Now he’s hungry and I’m tired. But we have groomsmen and fathers to consider. This is where our trip took another turn for the worse. I asked what charcoal gray vests they had (only one of the hottest colors this year, and a fabulous neutral). They had one option. ONE.

Since nothing can be too simple when it comes to weddings, it turns out that the one charcoal vest they had was in a different pattern than the champagne we originally liked. So we needed to rethink the patterned vest for the groom, but not before I made him try on another bow tie for good measure.

“Seriously? You still don’t like it?” I say. “I look like a waiter,” he says. OK, back into another vest you go then!

Thus, we had our winner. The Geometrics in Ivory with a pocket square and tie for him, and the same in charcoal (list as black, but the pattern makes it much more gray) for the groomsmen and fathers. We put down the deposit and walked out thinking we were done.

And we were done, for five minutes. Then we walked into Nordstrom, just to ask if they had ivory tuxedo shirts that might fit him better. “Hahahaha,” said the salesman. “No one makes ivory tuxedo shirts.” My brain instantly replayed Franck, “Hahahaha, Mr. Banks, Armani doesn’t make novvy-blue tuxados.” Right.

We mulled it over. We slept on it. I read the blogs. Something wasn’t sitting right and I completely rethought the look. He rethought the look.

Then there was a brilliant, happy turning point. We went to a wedding. The groom and groomsmen at the wedding were wearing exactly what we had chosen, down to the ivory shirt. And it looked great. Moving onward.

Was choosing tuxes easy for you and your groom? Or was it more of a chore?

I spent 4 hours this Saturday looking for the ties! It took us less than half an hour to find the suit and half of our day looking at ties! We were set on pink, and there are no sophisticated pink ties out there- back to the drawing board.

I think your selection looks great!! You won’t regret picking the champagne…We actually had a shirt custom made for the groom so it would be close to an ivory shade (because my dress was ivory). I am really glad we did…it looked SO much better next to my dress than a white shirt would have.

And FWIW…groom’s who have strong opinions about fashion and what they are doing to wear for the wedding aren’t easy either, in fact, they might be more difficult! :-)

I think he looks fantastic in your choice! I’m definitely leaning towards ivory as well.

We had a similar selection, except we chose the flourish-y ivory vest with the angle striped tie. My dress had a lot of flourish.

It looks really good without the jacket and then without the vest after a while too… :) And I’m a huge fan of ivory!

We bucked the suit trend and went with a tux. Mr. Taffy looked delicious! He did stress about the tie and shirt… he practiced tying his bow tie for weeks! It was very cute. :)

My daughter got married last week in Yorktown, and the groomsmen were wearing that also. Must be popular. It looks great though.

we went with a suit, but in selecting a shirt, he probably tried like, 7 of them before settling on one. i’m glad i made him realize that not all white shirts are created equal :P

My fiance owns his own tux (and has since high school). In addition to his own tux, he has his own white tie ensemble as well. Since our wedding is super formal, the men will wear white tie. My fiance often wears his own tux (black tie, hand tied bowtie) to formal events that we attend in DC so he didn’t think that it was “that formal” for our cathedral wedding and club cocktail reception. I’m a little less formal than Mr. Politico, but both his tux and white tie ensemble look fab on him as they were made for him. Most of our groomsmen have both a tux and white tie ensemble so it was very economical as well.

I think for us it will be a chore. I’m on team bow tie, whereas he is not.

I like what you guys chose! I do think Men’s Warehouse needs to step it up a notch and start offering a better selection. Or better yet, maybe some smaller businesses will pop up and give them some competition!

My fiance is the captain of team bow tie. Tuxes were really easy for us!

We did the ivory shirt, vest, tie combo from MW for the groom and black vest and tie for the groomsment and it looked awesome. So I think you will be happy with the choice.

I love the Father of the Bride quote –”novvy blue tuxados”. Too funny! I’m wearing ivory, so he’ll most likely be in ivory. Done and done. :)

Our tux selections went very similarly . Try three tuxes on, pick color, try three vests/tie combos, pick one.
Leave 5 minutes later.

@Glenda and @voomie24: Yep! We didn’t realize how popular it was, but now see it everywhere! I think it’s a good, classic choice that’s pretty neutral :)
@Miss French Fries: Me gusta Father of the Bride!!!!

tuxes are over-rated. Why not try a suit, or skip the coat and just have the vest. Thats totally in style and its sexy, and much more inexpensive than renting tuxes for each and every groomsmen.

@openeyedandready: I think different wedding styles and the personal styles of the bride and groom, are the determining factors for choosing the groomsmen wear - much like the bridesmaid dress choices! For us, tuxes were a great alternative. I do like the look of suits though too!

Omigoooooosh the bowtie issue!!! Mine LOVES them, seriously, that’s all he wanted for his birthday. So, being the good girlfriend that I am, I got him some from Brooks Brothers and pretended that I don’t mind if he wears them. His mom, however, well, her head might have spun around she hates them so much. Hilarious! Good luck!
