Miss Rainbow's Picture
Miss Rainbow, Tampa Age and Occupation: 22, Makeup Artist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Electrical Engineer/Programmer Engagement Date: November 27, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Gamble Plantation About Me: I'm a quirky (and slightly Type-A) freelance makeup artist who was born in Washington State, raised in Alabama, and now living with my one and only in sunny Florida. I'm fashion and beauty obsessed, and have recently discovered my inner domestic diva extraordinaire. I'm a wannabe chef, decorating addict, and trying desperately to be as crafty as possible---albeit only with a glue gun. I'm hopelessly in love with my fiance, and all things sparkly and feathery. Despite the glittery exterior, I'm a total hippie on the inside. When I'm not making up pretty faces, I love doing what I can to help people, animals, and the environment. Someday the FI and I will change the world, but first we're tackling our modern-vintage-Marie-Antoinette-meets-Alice-in-Wonderland inspired wedding. I just can't wait to be Mrs. Rainbow!
About Miss Rainbow

Play That Funky Music, Rainbow

November 3rd, 2009 @ 1:44 pm by Miss Rainbow

I do not like classical music; it’s just not me. I don’t want to walk down the aisle to Canon in D, nor do I want to hear a peep of Ave Maria. Mr. Rainbow, on the other hand, really enjoys him some classical music. He even wanted to be a musical conductor as a child—you know, the guy in the tux waving sticks at the front of the orchestra? Yup, that guy.

Luckily for me, however, despite Mr. R’s affinity to classical music, he’s pretty lax when it comes to picking the wedding music. He thinks I have good taste in music (aside from some lingering Spice Girls tunes on my iPod) so I’ve pretty much been given full reign, less a few songs on his “must play” list, which, might I add, happens to contain a song from the Ghostbusters soundtrack. Lord, I love that man, but don’t even ask.

That said, now that we’re not having a wedding party, I’m wondering if one song (just the bride’s processional) will be sufficient. I mean, there’s no point in having a processional song if you don’t have a wedding party to walk during the processional, right? Anyway, without further ado, I present to you the very non-traditional Rainbow Wedding Playlist!

  • Processional- “Look After You” The Fray (played during the seating of the parents instead, maybe?)
  • Bride- “Colorblind” Natalie Walker (a cover of the original by the Counting Crows—my favorite song ever)
  • Recessional- “Beautiful Love” The Afters
  • Bride and Groom Reception Entrance- “Everyday” Dave Matthews Band
  • First Dance- “Syndicate” The Fray (I love The Fray)
  • Cake Cutting- “Pocketful of Sunshine” Natasha Beddingfield
  • Last Song- “Don’t Stop Believing” Journey

The FI and I just had to work Don’t Stop Believing in there somewhere! It’s so classically ’80s and I am a sucker for ’80s music, even though I was only alive for 3 years in the ’80s! Also, you’ll notice that we’re foregoing the bouquet and garter toss. We just don’t have a lot of single friends and family members, so there would literally be like 2 single girls and 2 single guys on the floor. It seemed pretty pointless, and I have no problem bucking tradition, so out it went!

Are you having any thoroughly modern music played during your ceremony? Have you caught any flack from your more traditional family and/or friends for bucking tradition?

Awesome playlist! Yeah, the mans and I are somewhat obsessed with Don’t Stop Believing, so I’m sure it will find it’s way into our playlist. :)

Great choices!

We’re playing Falling Slowly, from the soundtrack to Once, when the bridal party walks.

And an instrumental version Hoppipolla by Sigur Ross for when I walk down.

Still trying to make the first dance work. We love Stevie Wonder, and his song “For Once In my Life”, but its too fast, and all of the slower versions by other artists aren’t as good at all.

oh yeah, and “Best Friend” by Queen for the recessional. Trying to make it fun, and not so sllooowww and/or boring.

@Miss Hamster: It’s a highly addictive song. I’ve never met anyone (well, at least anyone COOL) that doesn’t like Don’t Stop Believing! It’s one of those songs you can’t help but to sing (read: masscare) at the top of your lungs ;)

Good playlist. We used “Love me Tender” by Norah Jones for my walk down the aisle. Then I was going to have “Ever, Ever After” for the recessional, but Mr. S surprised me with the band playing ” I’m a Believer ” (Shrek Song) and we danced to that. Our technical first dance was “Someone Exactly Like You”.

I’m trying to avoid the bouquet and garter toss for the same reasons. Love your playlist!

I totally forgot about Colorblind until I saw it on your playlist! I love it. I’m walking down the aisle to “Only Hope” of A Walk to Remember fame, but we’re having a boy choir sing a choral arrangement of it. It’s part A Walk to Remember and part Romeo & Juliet.

Well. I am having all R&B at my ceremony, i.e.
“Overjoyed” Stevie Wonder
“When I’m with you” Tony Terry
“For You” Kenny Lattimore, etc.
plus instrumental gospel and jazz for guest seating and cocktail hour, respectively… I didn’t know this was non-traditional wedding music until I starting reading weddingbee since almost all of the weddings I have been to have played music similar to my selections!

Our ceremony music included Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and Radiohead. Probably could’ve gone even MORE nontraditional, but I was happy with it.

I hired a violin/classical guitar duo, so we’re doing a combo of classical and instrumental versions of the Beatles. The parents, groom and groomsmen are walking in to “Here, There and Everywhere”. I’m having only a MOH and a BM so I’m not switching songs when I walk in - we’re all walking into Canon in D. And the recessional will be Beatles again - All You Need is love.

I am using these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_String_Quartet

Specifically going to walk down the aisle to Don’t Stop Believing ala wedding singer.

Your. music. sounds. AWESOME!!! We totally have the same tastes in music. We’d be doing non-traditional entrance/exit songs for our ceremony, but the Catholic church isn’t too keen on that.

As for the Ghostbusters thing…Mr. FF is totally the same way. I have one word for you: “Rocky.”

Awesome! I really wish we could have secular music where we’re getting married. It’s been a task finding classical music that I love that’s also wedding appropriate. (A grand violin concerto just might sound odd for wedding music. lol)

It sounds like such a great blend of songs! We are still on the search for ours, but are hoping it will just come to us.

“Look After You” was our first dance song. We even learned a slow, non-hip-filled Rhumba to go with it. :)

Don’t stop believing is my rington & it will be played at least once during the reception. We’ll have to throw some other classics in there. I want living on a prayer played also.

I was only alive for 6 years during the 80’s, but it makes me feel old that Miss Rainbow was only around for the last 3 years.

My FI would love to have an awesome playlist like yours for our ceremony, but I’ve enlisted a string quartet (from an orchestra I play with) to play during our ceremony!

@Maestro: That song is so beautiful… I tear up everytime I hear it. It’s so powerful & emotional!

That’s awesome! We’ll be getting married at the church that my boy was ordained in, so I’m afraid it’s the straight and narrow for us!

I’m walking down the Aisle to my fiance’s best friend playing Brad Paisley’s “Waitin’ on a Woman.”

Love your song choices!
