Miss Snow, Madison, WI/Asheville, NC Age and Occupation: 28, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Graphic Designer Engagement Date: August 5, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: Claxton Farm About Me: I am true Southern gal displaced in the beautiful and blustery midwest. A true theatre geek at heart, I love any kind of performance and spend most of my time researching old productions in dank library archives. When not in the library, I love music (punk rock, bluegrass, and everything in between), design in all forms, any reality TV show on Bravo (especially those that feature housewives or sharp knives), beer and wine from Oregon, and exploring the outdoors. My fiance and I are true best friends, and he inspires me every day. After a long and happy dating relationship, we’ve decided to tie the knot in the mountains of North Carolina, our home state. We’re planning a long-distance, largely-DIY, eco-conscious hip farm affair that celebrates family, friends, and love.

Moving Forward

First, thanks to all who expressed such concern, support, generosity, and kindness about the loss of Claxton Farm’s beautiful barn and about our wedding plans.

Luckily, the owners that manage the site have made plans to rebuild over the next six months. Mr. Snow and I have decided maintain our wedding plans for this location, old barn, new barn, or no barn. In one respect, the natural beauty surrounding the barn makes for a gorgeous wedding location, and the spirit with which the owners and event planners approached this crisis meant a lot to us. In another regard, this tragedy (more for the owners and who depend on this space for their livelihood) reminded both Mr. Snow and me how little a venue matters in the large scale of a marriage.

Sure, we were sad (as I’m sure you all picked up in that post titled “sadness”… LOL), but we also realized how we could wed, as Mr. Snow so hilariously stated, “in a ditch” and our marriage would still be grounded in our love for one another. We’ve been through much worse than this, and we know we’ll face other tough times over the course of our marriage to one another, but that’s what marriage is all about, right? The good times and the down right lame times. :)

It was frustrating to feel back to square one with planning (even though we’re most likely not!), but comforting to know that Mr. Snow and I really are one heck of a team, prepared to handle bumps in the wedding and marriage road together.

Now, let’s get back to the fun DIY projects. :)

So, did you have a wedding crisis? What’d you learn from it?

I just wanted to say that I think it’s great that you’re sticking by your venue. After all, marriage isn’t about smooth sailing, it’s about making the best of even the worst situation and you two are certainly starting out on the right foot.

Very thoughtful post - I’m looking forward to seeing your plans for the location - in whatever progress it may be in at the time!

Awesome! I love how symbolic it is that you guys are sticking with your original venue. I hope everything works out for the owners and for you guys!

I think that the engagement period for a couple is a true test of what married life will be like. You and Mr. Snow are passing with flying colors. Instead of being negative, you both choose to remain positive. I think that is a great quality to have in a marriage.

This post was really, really important, I think, for everyone to read. Thank you! Like Mrs. Mouse, I appreciate the symbolism with sticking with the same venue…keep calm and carry on!
