Miss Pretzel's Picture
Miss Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I was born and raised in New Hampshire, went to undergrad and grad school at Purdue University in Indiana, had my career take me to Wisconsin, Atlanta, and then finally settled in Seattle. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. We love Chuck Taylor All Stars, holding hands, clever t-shirts, bacon, KEXP Radio, craft beer, buying local, cooking from scratch, gardening, mastering our new Gocco, and of course, each other. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

Sit Atop My Cupcake

Mr Pretzel loves cupcakes… no, no, no, I don’t think you get me… he LOOOOVES cupcakes. According to him it is the perfect serving of cake. They are like little cake nirvana in your hand. I like cupcakes and I’m not too crazy about wedding cake. So it was a no brainer early on—we were having wedding cupcakes.

While that was an easy decision, how to top the cupcakes was not so easy. After trolling Etsy, I quickly realized that most traditional toppers would not work on cupcakes. So, it was time to brainstorm mini-toppers that would work on cupcakes.

First, I looked into using LEGO Minifigs, since Mr Pretzel is a LEGO fan.

In my head, I saw a Princes Leia and Han Solo Minifig topper. But I soon found out that the Leia I envisioned, the one in white with cinnamon bun hair, was hard to find. Ironically, the bikini clad Slave Leia was readily available… ummm yeah… no. While searching for Minifig Leia, I found out that Lego actually made Bride and Groom Minifigs. Most of the grooms were sporting tuxes, and Mr Pretzel is wearing a vest—no jacket. I stumbled on this vest clad groom and bride on eBay for just under $40:

Done—check it off the list! I was sure Mr Pretzel would be thrilled with my LEGO find. Surprise, surprise he was not very excited about the Minifigs—actually, he downright didn’t like it. *sigh* I was back to square one, so I went back to Etsy and did something novel—I searched on exactly what I was looking for: “Cupcake Wedding Topper”. *DING DING DING* We found a winner! Right at the top of my search results were Custom Cupcake Toppers by goosegrease. These adorable painted wooden people won my heart. Let me introduce you to my cupcake topper obsession:

These little guys set you back $40 and are customizable to look like you and your groom. I could see mini-me sporting turquoise pumps, and mini-Mr Pretzel rocking his signature Converse All Stars. *eeek! Yay!*

$40 was within the range I was wiling to pay, but it was the upper limit. At the back of my mind something was tugging at me. “I could do that… and it would be fun!” I put the topper into my Etsy favorites and would come back to “check in” with them from time to time over the next months. They even graced a couple of my inspiration boards.

Have you not purchased something because you thought you might do it yourself? How did your DIY version come out?

I also think “hey…maybe I could do that!” hence my mile-long list of DIY items. Those toppers are super cute — can’t wait to see what you end up with!

I think one of the other bees had this kind. I could be wrong though.

We’ll be buying ours-either from Walmart, JoAnn, or Michaels (or another craft store when we find one we like)

@pmerr:
A wedding bee reader did indeed DIY cupcake toppers using the same inspiration. See the DIY boards

Oh yeah, I definitely do that! And sometimes it turns out great, and sometimes not so much. But it’s definitely fun to try.

Yeah we all do that, Just give yourself time to order the product if you get towards the finish line and it’s not done. Very cute toppers though.

I think I read before that Lego gave away the bride and groom minifigs in the past. Crazy that people are getting $40 for them now. I think your topper idea is much cuter, anyway!

@Lisa in NJ: Looks like the link you shared is actually Miss Pretzel’s project from before she became a bee blogger. I guess we are in for a crafty DIY treat!

We’re doing cupcakes too, (I actually just posted pics on my blog about our 6 foot tall tower we made), but I think we’ll just be doing flowers on top of a jumbo cupcake on the top tier. All the rest of them will be decorated with intricate frosting designs, so I don’t want to cover them!

Too bad he didn’t like the Legos–those are adorable! I bet you can totally make your own wooden cake toppers.

I actually DIYed a Goosegrease-like topper myself and despite a distinct lack of artistic tendancies they turned out pretty dang good if I do say so myself!
I found a pack of the little wooden men at Hobby Lobby and some acrylic paint for maybe $7 or so. Definitely less than $10. I say it’s worth a shot!
