Taking Care of Business

November 5th, 2009 @ 2:28 pm by Miss Dachshund

Despite our lack of a Hallowedding, we did throw a small Halloween party. We couldn’t let our invitations go to waste! We used it as an excuse to celebrate Mr. Dachshund’s arrival and to spend time with our family and friends.

Mr. Doxie and I went as (a very last-minute) Frankenstein’s Monster and his bride. We couldn’t get the bolts to stick to his neck with the safe-for-skin glue, and after he rejected Super Glue suggestion, I decided to just draw them in for effect. :) You can see the Halloween-fabric bunting I made hanging in the background.

After our Friday night Halloween festivities, Mr. D and I headed down to Los Angeles to continue our celebrations.

We had planned on going to West Hollywood for Halloween night and partying it up with a few close friends, but Mr. Doxie was being a major party-pooper. He didn’t feel well and has a pretty big aversion to cities in general. In LA he was miserable.

So, we skipped West Hollywood and went to sleep early. The next morning, determined to cheer him up (and because I knew that a certain paper store was in the vicinity) we sought out the most deliciously over-priced cupcakes in Beverly Hills.

A few pumpkin cupcakes later, we were on our way to Paper Source when what did we see!?

A beacon of light shone down upon that modern roof-top. So what if we’re registered at Crate and Barrel when the nearest one is three hours away? We’d added a few things to the registry via the internet, but there are some things you have to see in person.

“Can we go update our registry!? PRETTY PLEASE!?”

“Uggghhhhh,” Mr. Doxie groaned.

“But you’ll get to play with a really cool scanner gun!”

“Ughhhhhhhhhh,” he repeated as I pulled into the parking structure.

Everything started out great! Mr. Doxie, though I doubt he’d admit it, was having fun scanning things in. (That’s an Altoids tin in Mr. D’s pocket, not chewing tobacco!)

flatwar

We even agreed on the first item that we looked at, our flatware! This was going to be effortless!

Uhhh, or so I thought. We started disagreeing on everything else. I knew Mr. D and I had different styles, I just didn’t think he’d care very much about it. I was wrong.

We disagreed on our everyday dishes, wine glasses, cutting boards, sofas…

CIMG13901

And then there were the items that were a bit overwhelming. Forget disagreement… neither of us could make a decision to being with! How do you choose one design from a whole wall of glasses?

CIMG13902

We managed to survive, even though I did have to do some online registry cleanup when we got home; Mr. D was a little trigger-happy.

Despite our disagreements, I’m relieved that we did decide on quite a lot of registry items. Though, I think I need to find a comprehensive checklist of registry basics so that I can cross-reference our C&B registry with the one from Macy’s. All-in-all, I’m happy that we made it down to Los Angeles to get this taken care of. And, I got all of our STD envelopes and paper without having to pay for shipping!

Were you and your fiance in agreeance when it came to your registries? If not, how did you come to see eye-to-eye? Do any of you have recommendations to organize multiple registries?

I still haven’t used a scanner gun, but I did end up returning some things because what was in person was not what I expected. Great costume.

i love the scanner gun. probably the best part of registering! the boy and i started looking at stuff for our future apartment and so far there haven’t been too many disagreements. i think we have a pretty good idea of how to mesh our differing styles

My favorite piece of registry advice that I can give is this…

If you know where you and your FI will be living post-marriage, think about where you will store each item you’ve registred for. I know all those shiny gadgets are SO pretty but will they be something you enjoy or that get in your way as they jam up your cupboards?

I live in a small kitchen and really focused on only registering for what I could comfortably store. I ended up really streamlining my registry and am so glad I did. I’ve heard so many horror stories of people regretting the quantity or size of things they registered for.

@Miss Moonbeam - After receiving my first online registry item and being surprised by it, I tried to stick with scanner gun items as much as possible. Being able to pick up an item, see it’s real size and feel it gives you a whole different impression of items you are comparing.

Is that Foster flatware I see?! That’s what we registered for :) We’ve been using it for about a month now and love it.

We LOVED registering at C&B. We were lucky and pretty much agreed on everything. I think our only dispute was that my husband wanted a decanter, and I saw no reason for one, but we decided to register for it anyway. In the end, he ended up using it for his scotch, so it’s all good.

we started our registry last weekend too! i was dreading it, thinking we wouldnt agree on anything. it wasnt terrible, but i totally feel your pain - it’s so hard to decide on some things! BB&B gave us a master list, and when we got home I had him mark off which things he wants input on, so at least we have a plan of action next time we go together….

oh, your costumes are so awesome, i love them!

we didn’t have disagreement over the registry items as much as we would get tired and cranky.

I went with my husband (then fiance) to register and handed him the zapper to zap stuff. I figured he’d like to do that.

I knew we were going to disagree on everything, so I just let him zap his heart away and made him believe that we were done by the end of the night.

Then, we went home, I went online and picked everything out and made changes.

He didn’t even notice anything when the presents started coming in.

We had fun the first time we registered and took it easy, only spent like an hour. However, that hour made me realize that we were definitely going to need to spend several hours tackling the rest of what we needed. The second time around, I took snacks and a Pepsi (and may have bribed him with beer).

I don’t think we’ll disagree over our registry… we have similar styles as far as dinnerware is concerned, and we both love good cooking pots and pans. Home decore we might differ on a little bit, since he’s modern, with all white walls and minimalist decor whereas I am hardcore traditional with a twist (as in mahogany libraries and feathered flower arrangements). Love the bolts drawn it, too funny!

@pvaulter718: I think I may have to bribe Mr. Doxie to get him into Macy’s #2! Beer would be a great motivator : )

@Kathryn: LOL! Those are too funny!

Haha, I didn’t even register with my FI, I went with my MOH. He really didn’t want to go, and wouldn’t care what I registered for anyway. So, why make it painful for the both of us?!
