And Another Dress…

November 6th, 2009 @ 10:30 am by Miss Snow

Yes, another dress. ANOTHER. DRESS. I am officially cut off from the sale section of J.Crew’s “Weddings and Parties” (no really, two of my bridesmaids have dictated “no more internet dress buying”). But I really like this new dress. It is the most bride-like (especially since I was totally not wearing bridal-type-dresses at first). I have pictures of me and the sample dress below. Part of me really likes it, and part of me is really unhappy with my size. I wish there were more pictures of size 12+ brides so I wouldn’t feel so bleh about my physical appearance. I hope to lose some weight between now and the wedding, not only because I want to feel more physically confident and fit, but also because I’ve been using our relocation to Wisconsin as an excuse to not acknowledge some of the weight I’ve gained (a health issue more than a vanity issue).

I don’t think I look terrible, and I shouldn’t feel so bummed after having lost over 100 pounds (well, 80 after the “Wisconsin 20″), so I’ll both work on feeling fit and healthy, but also on accepting myself as a worthy and beautiful bride even if I don’t drop a pound.

The model:

J. Crew Rebecca Long

link

Then me:

Me in short dress:

The bottom line: I still don’t know which one I like. The short dress is too small right now, but I think it fits better. The long one looks more “farm bride” but I don’t know if it is the most flattering fit… I think I need to *dun dun dun* physically go to a store and try on dresses. I was/am really nervous about this idea…

I’m a little frustrated/downtrodden about the whole dress issue.

How did you shake your nerves about trying on dresses? And which dress do you like better?

You are beautiful in both! I like the short one because of the fit, AND for a June wedding. I wouldn’t settle, though. I’d wait until you find something that makes you feel perfect.

I really like the short one you - I think you look great in it, and the fabric looks really nice. The long one does look more “bridal-y” though.

I was really nervous about trying on dresses - for some reason, I thought that I wouldn’t like any of them. I ended up liking too many of them and having to narrow it down!

I LOVE the short dress on you! I think it’s super flattering and makes your curves look gorgeous!
I agree with Miss Hampster that the long flowy dress might be more “bridal” though. Probably going to a bridal store would be a good idea. Even if you are working on getting in shape, you’ll still be able to figure out which sillouette flatters your figure the best. Good luck!

I love both of them, but I think the first one makes more of an impact. Can you not change into the second as a reception dress?

The only thing you need to look good in your dress is confidence…you look great!! Take it from a gir, who spent months obsessing over not being able to fill out the top of my dress….embrace your curves!!

I like the short one.

I was terrified to go try on dresses. I know some people can’t wait, but I was so nervous! Finally, I went, and the ladies were so helpful and nice, and they even helped me pick out styles to flatter my figure, and based my style on the regular clothes I walked in the store wearing. And, it turned out that they were totally right! No need to be nervous! Also, I love both dresses, but I really like the short one on you.

Theyre both super cute dresses, I like the long one its so adorable! I wish I would have seen dresses like these before i bought mine. By the way you are beautiful, you should be SO proud of your accomplishment of losing all the weight! There is nothing wrong with a size twelve.

I think the long dress looks AMAZING on you! the neckline and the waistline are so flattering. And I think it’s chic without being too fancy for your farm wedding!

You look good in both dresses, but if you’re not loving them, it will show. You need a dress that you feel absolutely AMAZING in. I was terrified to try on dresses and I had my frustrating moments when some stores only had size 6 to try on, but you will find one that’s incredible for you! The more I look @ your dresses, the more I’m really liking #2. Maybe you could wear it to your rehearsal dinner, if you’re having one that is :]

I think you should go to a store… really! It’s not that bad, and it might be enjoyable… you may surprise yourself…keep an open mind, be upfront with your budget, and then let the salesperson assist you. They are typically great at accentuating curves, and what you think will look “meh” may be PERFECT! Bring a pal, and have some fun… plan lunch or cocktails to go along with it…
You are beautiful…. congratulations on the weight loss… don’t worry about the number on the size tag either! (most brides are NOT size 6!) There are millions of dresses for all shapes and sizes…yours is out there!

Wow, congratulations on your serious weight loss efforts, that is a huge accomplishment! Honestly, I like both dresses but I think it does make sense to go try some on in the stores before making the final decision…Good luck, you’re going to be a beautiful beautiful bride, no matter what dress you choose!

I really like the fit on the second one. I bet if you went to a few bridal shops (or even just to the evening gown section of some of the bigger department stores), you could find a more ‘bridal’ gown with the same type of material and fit as the second one! Good Luck! You’ll look awesome no matter what!

Why don’t you hit up a David’s Bridal and try on a few more to see if anything jumps out at you? The reason I suggest DB is that they actually have dresses in every size and you won’t have to put up with trying on a sample at a boutique store that doesn’t fit. even if you don’t end up liking anythng there you’ll get a feel for styles.
There’s something about the bodice of the short dress that is very flattering on you but both are cute and a major WTG on losing all that weight! :-)

I love the long dress on you. Get a wide, colorful sash and I think it will look more proportional to your waist and give a bit of your punky side out there.

Love that long one. My FSIL wore it to her wedding and it was adorable. The pictures of her dancing turned out great to because of how awesomely it flowed.

Did you know it was the bride’s dress in, I Love You Man? Yep!

I do agree a colorful sash would be super cute!

They both look great! The long one makes more of a “bridal” impact to me - I love the neckline and the sash on you. But both look wonderful on you!

I agree with the posters above that if you’re still uncertain, you should probably make time and go to a store to try other dresses on, just for comparison. If you’re looking for places, I recommend Vera’s here locally, for the sheer variety of styles and great customer service. The David’s Bridal here is actually a nice one, as well - try and go on a weekday, first thing in the morning.

Congratulations on the weight loss - you look great!

The short dress is definitely better! It is sweet and also looks better on you… I have the same problem! I have gained a lot of weight recently (like 40 lbs in 6 months)! I need to lose it, but I want to do it healthy. If I’m still pudgy on my wedding day, oh well. This is a lifestyle change, and my FI thinks I am gorgeous. Good luck!

They’re btoh adorable! But I HIGHLY recommend going and trying some on. It will either cement your decision for the dresses you have, or you will find something you love. Either way, its a rite of passage to go try on pretty white dresses for your wedding, why not milk it (sorry for the farm reference, couldn’t resist!)?

I like them both also! If I had to pick just one I’d go with the longer one :) I just love the long line of that dress.
P.S. Your hair cut is adorable :)

I wore the Rebecca Long for my wedding and I’m a size 12! :) I loved it!! I actually wore it for my halloween costume too! (MaryAnn from Trueblood, LOL)
But I agree with everyone, you should pick a dress that you love and are comfortable in. You could totally wear the long one and then use the short one as your reception dress. They both look great!!!

You all have seriously made my day with all the nice comments and suggestions! I’m already feeling a little more relaxed about this…(but I’m still pretty freaked out about the dress shopping…yikes!)

@yelli: LOL! I know, I wish I had a poll b/c it seems like the Hive has split right down the middle!

@Miss Moonbeam: I thought about that too! Or one of those awesome flower belts.

@ashlle: Where is Vera’s? Do you know of any Wedding Gown Warehouse type places (like where there are just racks and racks of dresses) around here? (Does that kind of place even exist?)

@LoriLori: I wandered into David’s Bridal to look at how birdcage veils were put together (ssssh…), and they seemed really nice. I didn’t realize they carried a wide range of sizes!

@mcnetn3: I hadn’t even thought of the evening gown section! That’s brilliant!

I like you in both, but think the short one looks better in those pictures.

I know what you mean about having pictures with models that aren’t stick thin. I’m nervous about dress shopping for the size issue.

i think you look great in the shorter dress. if you aren’t feeling it enough for your wedding, how about finding a similar cut/style in a different length?

okay so the first thing that came to my mind when i saw both dresses was something that the english guy always says on the tv show how to look good naked:
LOOK AT THOSE KNOCKERS! and WHAT A RACK!

you look absolutely wonderful in both of them they are both so charming.

@anvil_chick: LOL, you make me blush! This is a recurrent issue I have with my clothing love, J Crew. They don’t always cater to amply bosomed:)

@Jessie516: Me too! I’m really thinking of driving to one of their stores that carry the bridal line so I can try on their dresses (instead of buying every one I see on ultra-mega-fina clearance that I can’t return).
