The final leg of our honeymoon journey was the part I was looking forward to the most; three days and two nights spent in Asheville, North Carolina!
It was still raining when we arrived at our final bed and breakfast, the Beaufort House, but that didn’t stop us from getting excited over the giant porch. We were even greeted by this guy:
I’m not even sure what he is, some kind of caterpillar?!
Our stay in Asheville was much like the rest of the honeymoon: relaxing, casual, fun!
We didn’t have any concrete plans for the first afternoon, so we got a map and directions from the super helpful inn keeper, and just walked into the downtown area and did some shopping and exploring. And eating, lots of eating.
We grabbed lunch at the Laughing Seed Cafe, while watching some dudes rock climb across the street. The jalapeno fries were amaaaaazing. At this point it was starting to get pretty chilly, so we grabbed tickets for our “event” of the night, and walked back to our room.
Vegan reuben and jalapeno fries!
If you are anything like me, before you book a hotel room or make travel plans, you check out tripadvisor.com. I use Trip Advisor for everything travel-related. When you go to the Asheville page, the number one tourist attraction is a bus tour, which sounded horrible to me. We are not old people, therefore, we aren’t exactly bus tour people. I decided to check out the LaZoom website anyway and discovered this wasn’t just any bus tour. It was a performance art-based comedy tour, 90 minutes of Asheville on a giant purple bus, and you are encouraged to drink. A lot.
The LaZoom tour was amazing and we seriously contemplated doing it again the next night. There were people on the bus that had experienced the tour several times. When you drive around town on this purple spectacle, everyone waves and calls out to you! All of the locals know about the tour. It was a blast. Mr. Sprinkle picked up some beer (I stuck with fancy local sodas; moving vehicles and booze don’t mix well for me!).
The tour operators quickly learned that we were honeymooners, and paid us some extra attention. It also helped that Mr. Sprinkle is a walking encyclopedia and he knew the answer to every single quiz question they asked!
The bus went all over Asheville and we got to see lovely houses, old insane asylums, and a rogue nun.
Our second full day in Asheville started off with an awesome breakfast. Since it was nearing the weekend, the inn was nearly full. We shared our breakfast table with guests from all over the south. It was great to get to know everyone. One of the best parts of staying in a B&B is the community experience. We had already met our fellow guests the evening before during the inn’s daily “wine and snacks mixer,” so it was easy to jump into conversation over breakfast!
While the Beaufort House is not specifically a vegan B&B, they were more than happy to make us a special dish each morning. We were served delicious apple crepes and yogurt parfaits, and on our second morning there I enjoyed the best tofu scramble I have ever had, and I have eaten many, many tofu scrambles all over the country!
Delightful soy yogurt and granola parfait.
After breakfast, we headed back downtown for some rainy day shopping and sightseeing.
The tallest building in the U.S. without stairs! (You have to use the building next door to get to each floor… bizarre!)
A giant iron!
That afternoon we were fairly worn out from all of the walking, so we grabbed some snacks and decided to spend the night playing the in-house board games, watching movies and just snuggling by our fireplace.
We also took some photos around the beautiful yard and porch.
We loved our guest rooms (we had the entire third floor to ourselves!) but Mr. Sprinkle could not get used to the slanted ceiling. He must have hit his head 30 times in the 48 hours we spent there!
The sitting room.
A little nook in our hallway.
The bedroom (I graciously offered to sleep on the side of the bed closest to the slanted wall!)
Sadly, after almost a full week of relaxing luxury, it was time to head home. We left for the airport early, because Mr. Sprinkle had no ID, and we were a bit worried about the whole security process. We really shouldn’t have wasted any time worrying! The Asheville airport is teeny tiny, and it only took us about three extra minutes to explain the situation and get through security. After one last stop in the dreaded Atlanta airport, we were back home in Los Angeles.
Our honeymoon may have been a bit unusual, but it was perfect for us! We will never forget our playful piggie friends, the people we met on the crazy bus tour, or the sounds the bugs of the South make to help you sleep. We are already making plans to go back for another visit!
