Miss Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I was born and raised in New Hampshire, went to undergrad and grad school at Purdue University in Indiana, had my career take me to Wisconsin, Atlanta, and then finally settled in Seattle. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. We love Chuck Taylor All Stars, holding hands, clever t-shirts, bacon, KEXP Radio, craft beer, buying local, cooking from scratch, gardening, mastering our new Gocco, and of course, each other. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

The Ring Part I: Hugging the Girdle

November 6th, 2009 @ 11:56 am by Miss Pretzel

A little while ago we took my size 4 ring in to be sized down to a size 3.5… yeah I’ve got some teeny-tiny fingers. The day we were to pick up my ring, I got struck with the flu and spent the rest of the week in bed or in quarantine. Sigh… we had to wait an extra week be reunited. I felt strange without my ring, but Mr Pretzel and I agreed that it was sliding around my finger way too much for either of us to feel comfortable. When I finally got it back, I realized that I hadn’t really elaborated much on my ring.

Let’s rewind back to last March. Mr Pretzel and I had just started talking marriage and engagement. I hadn’t even started to think about rings. Then, we were watching Sweet Home Alabama and I had my first engagement ring thought/comment.

You know the scene: Reese and Patrick are in a dark room, the lights flip on, the blue boxes are stacked high, and the diamonds come out.

Me: “Don’t you worry, I won’t be demanding a giant flashy Tiffany Ring.”

Mr Pretzel: “That’s good, ’cause if you did, you might be waiting a while for it. *grin*”

Don’t get me wrong, I had never actually looked at Tiffany Rings… I just had a caricature in my head of the type of girl who demands a large fancy diamond in a blue box. A caricature that I knew “wasn’t me”. We had a giggle and enjoyed the rest of the movie. Oh that comment, and how it would be my downfall.

Now, not only had I not looked at Tiffany rings, I hadn’t looked at any engagement rings. I thought it would be funny to email Mr Pretzel the most jewel encrusted, over the top, expensive ring, and pretend that it was “the one”. I remembered the quote from the movie, and my fingers quickly typed www.tiffany.com, with full expectations of over the top and flashy. In my mind I could see the look on Mr Pretzel’s face when I showed him a ring all blinged out and huge!

1

So NOT me!

As the page loaded, I lost my words.

2

*cue music and lights… behold the perfect ring*

When I finally found words, all I could muster was “Damn it!”

There it was, the Tiffany® Setting… so freaking simple and perfect. The lines were clean and simple and the diamond was beautiful and sophisticated, everything I didn’t even know I wanted in a ring.

3

ohhh… pretty

I did a little research about Tiffany and the Tiffany® Settin. This baby has history!

In 1886 Tiffany introduced the engagement ring as we know it today—the Tiffany® Setting—an innovation that lifts the diamond above the band with six platinum prongs, allowing a more complete return of light from the stone and maximizing its brilliance. -Tiffany & Cmpany history

The price was surprisingly reasonable and the quality high. Hmm… maybe I judged good ol’ Tiffany and Co. too harshly. I set aside plans to kid Mr Pretzel with an ostentatious ring in favor of seeing this one in person. *Sigh* In person, it was just as beautiful. The saleswoman was awesome and educated me on all things diamond. I was smitten with the ring. Smitten and a little sheepish; how ironic that I had fallen for a Tiffany Ring.

Armed with a Tiffany book on engagement rings, I met Mr Pretzel for dinner. He wanted to know how my shopping had gone and if I had seen anything I liked. I bit my lower lip and nodded my head silently not making eye contact. He asked if I was going to tell him about it. I nodded my head no. He gave me a funny look and I burst out, “I found the ring I love and now I am a hypocrite.” He gave me a blank stare, so I tossed the blue book onto the table. We both looked at the book, and together we burst out laughing.

That night I read him passages out of the book and we had a good chuckle. Our favorite quote accompanies this photo:

4

“Notice how the prongs hug the girdle without violating the table”

Honest to God, it really says that. I went to sleep dreaming of hugged girdles and un-violated tables.

What has been ironic in your wedding planning? How did you fall in love with your ring?

I just loooove that movie. And now we know why so many people love Tiffany’s. I don’t really think it’s as much of a status symbol for some people, as it is a good quality, gorgeous ring!
It’s too bad you never did send that email to Mr. Pretzel, what if he really did buy you that kind of hideous ring?! That would be horrible.

Lovely ring, and I can’t help it, but, hopefully it leads to a violated table or two. sorry

@Miss Moonbeam: Lol… that was going to be my Facebook status when Mr P proposed “Pretzel has a hugged girdle and violated table” perhaps I should make that my status.
@kmattso2: Lol… I might not be engaged now if I demanded that big ring, I might still be waiting for him to save up the money!

I was CONVINCED that I needed a three stone e-ring with channel set diamonds in the band and that it was the ONLY kind of ring I really wanted.

When I tried “the one” on, I literally felt sick to my stomach. Like, nearly puked, sick to my stomach. It was so breathtaking, it felt so right, and it was SO not what I ever imagined I would want. I felt sick because I was afraid that if I didn’t get what I imagined, that I wouldn’t be as happy in the long run.

Boy, was I wrong. I trusted my gut and went for my ring, and it is…fabulous. So my preconceived ideas were wrong too, and I’m so in love with what I got!

Ha - for both my ring and my dress what I wound up with was the opposite of what I thought I wanted! Especially if you have little fingers (I’m not a 3.5 but still a 4.5 is pretty small!) you really need to try rings on. Anything much more than a carat and a quarter looked ridiculous on my finger!

OMG that is a hilarious quote. What does “violating the table” mean?? Now I am staring at my ring wondering if my prongs violate my table…

Sigh, as much as I loved Tiffany’s in high school, I’m just not a Tiffany girl anymore. Which is excellent, because there is no way we could ever afford one now. I love your ring and think it is gorgeous, though! And I totally think you should have made that your FB status!

Goodness, that always happens to me. I’ll make some comment about something and then the next thing I know I’m eating my words. It’s always so humbling, haha.

You can’t go wrong with such a classic style. It’s timeless and stunning!
For all the girls who love the Tiffany look, but can’t squeeze it in the budget. I found a “Tiffany-style” setting that I thought looked about as close as you would be able to get to the “real deal.” Granted, it won’t ever be a “Tiffany ring,” but it might be the next best thing.

@LatteLove: OMG their customer service! Our Tiffany gal, Amy, she sent us thoughtful congratulations card after we got engaged and thank you cards after we purchased Mr P’s band there (that’s a whole other story). She’s awesome and takes care of everything. Tiffany knows a thing or two about customer service.

Yep, same story for me. I told my fiance there was no way I would be demanding a Tiffany ring… until we went to Tiffany’s to try some on. Of course I fell in love with the Lucida rectangle cut — ya know, the one that they say is their own patented cut… that you can’t get ANYWHERE else?! Well, I got my ring. And I love it. And their customer service was awesome to boot.

Haha, so funny. Weddings are like that. YOu think you want one thing and then when you look at it you don’t and vice versa.

It was love at first sight for my ring. I was at an antique show with the boy looking for rare books. Something shiny caught my eye at the next booth (I think I have ADD). I wandered over and it was like the angels were shining a spotlight onto this ring. It wasn’t like anything I expected that I would want. I wanted simple but this is so beautifully intricate (in a vintage way) I can’t imagine wanting anything else.

I fell for exactly the opposite ring that I thought I wanted. I went into shopping thinking I wanted a Classic Tiffany. It’s a gorgeous setting. We didn’t have the best experience with T&Co customer service, however. My center stone is an heirloom, and ever though it’s a Tiffany diamond, they made it seem virtually impossible to reset into a band. Hmph.

So we kept looking. The more rings I looked at, the less I wanted a plain band. I ended up with a channel set band and a very sparkly stone on either side of my center. it’s pretty much as far as you can get from a Classic Tiffany … but it’s just perfect. Wouldnt trade it for anything.

Haha, “hugging the girdle.” I fell in love with a Tiffany ring, too, and felt guilty about it. They just don’t make settings like that anywhere else! I had to settle for a teeny, tiny diamond, but it was worth it.

hugged girdles and violated tables? are we still talking about e-rings?!

haha. i told the boy i like a specific ring, then went shopping and ended up liking a completely different ring. he looked at me and shook his head as we walked out the jewelry store!

@elaineathon: Ok, so I used to work in jewelry…I’ll explain…it does make sense!

The girdle of the diamond is the widest part of the stone (where the prongs are attached…that little edge). The table is the largest facet that the stone has (the big one on top). In this case, the prongs are “hugging the girdle,” while still not rising above the level that the table is at. So, therefore, the table isn’t violated!

Ah, my time at that job does pay off sometimes! :) Although, the prongs on my engagement ring violate my table…haha! ;)
