About Miss Pudding

A Beginning…

November 7th, 2009 @ 11:35 am by Miss Pudding

When Mr. Pudding and I first began to think about marriage, we had some issues that most couples do not experience. You see, we had the misfortune of being in a long distance relationship.

We met at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Mr. P’s family, although based in Vermont, has a history of attending university in Canada. Both of his parents graduated from a Canadian school, so Queen’s was a natural choice for him.

When we first met, I thought that the fact that he was from Vermont was the coolest thing ever… I had images of snowy mountains, hot chocolate, and beautiful scenery. I loved going to visit him. Vermont truly is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been.

It didn’t take long for me to change my tune about Vermont, however.

After graduating from Queen’s in 2007, Mr. P went home to Vermont, and I went home to the Greater Toronto Area. We lived apart for almost two years, traveling back and forth to see each other. We tried to visit every other weekend, but the drive was not very glamorous (almost 8 hours, more than half of it spent on the 401).

So, our journey began with immigration. We had to make a decision about where we wanted to live. Initially, we decided that Canada was the better option. We figured that being near a city like Toronto would provide a good backdrop for a young, professional couple like us. We changed our minds at the last minute, and I have been happily reunited with Mr. Pudding for two months now. I am also rekindling my romance with Vermont.

Did you decide to relocate to be with your honey? Are you happy with your decision?

Great story!!! I’m so glad that you were able to make a happy decision.
I did not relocate to be with my fiance; we both live in the Greater Toronto Area.
p.s. I LOVE the 401– the scenery is just wonderful. :) But that may just be because I love driving long distances…

I’m glad you’re together again. My FI and I went through the same thing - talking about marriage while being an 8 hour drive away. I moved down here to be with him (and my family) about 5 months ago.

Oh… and I assume we’ll be hearing more about this civil ceremony, yes?

Boo Queen’s! UWO forever! ;-) Luckily we’re both from the GTA (nice to see a blogger from there) but we’re still in London as I’m finishing up school. I do have friends that are going through this right now though, it’s tough being from different countries. I’m glad it’s working out for you!

Aww, that’s a great story! We met in high school, so we share the same hometown, but our graduate school search, though still in the early stages, is proving to be the cause for a lot of anxiety. I’m sure our future holds plenty of opportunities for location compromise.

what a great story! My fiancee decided to transfer to my college about a year and a half into our relationship. In our first year I did a lot of 1 hour drives to see him amongst my hectic schedule between classes and work. It was hard though when our schedules wouldn’t allow it. I was so happy that he decided to come to my college so we could be closer.

Man, I am so impressed… I have NO idea how y’all do LDR’s, I tried it once and it totally destroyed us. So glad to see it CAN work!

@Cristina: once you get past Bowmanville, it’s not bad…but to be honest, 5 hours on the 401 gets a little redundant. It’s funny though, now that I don’t have to make the drive, I kind of miss it!

@melodicsighs1: Of course you’ll get to hear more about the civil ceremony! I wouldn’t hold out on you gals!

@Brianalaura: My younger brother went to Western, but I still think that Queen’s is better!

@tea: Well, one of the main reasons was the fact that Mr. Pudding thinks of Vermont as “his home” and I’m not particularly attached to Toronto (I have moved a lot in my life, and don’t consider one place “home). Also, Mr. Pudding loves his job. It made sense to invest in his career, since I can pretty much teach anywhere. I’ll be honest with you, I cried like a baby when we finally made the decision. I wanted to stay in Canada, but it was for selfish reasons. Coming to Vermont was what was best for us.

@KMSull: To be honest, the distance was the best thing that could have happened to us. It really made us stronger as a couple, because it made us realize how much we were willing to sacrifice for one another. It’s a true test - if the relationship falls apart because of distance, it would have fallen apart eventually anyway (at least in my opinion).

My fiancee and I did long distance for two years from Calgary to Montreal before he decided to move there for my last year of school, after that we decided to move back to Alberta, but I am starting my second degree in Edmonton (3 hours north of Calgary) and just this weekend after three months of pseudo long distance (pseudo only because a 3 hr drive is WAY less than 5 hr flight…) we are reunited again. Its been quite the roller coaster I must say with it, but we now are happy with our decision and finally glad to be settling down for a while at least! I do agree that it has made our relationship stronger as well, our communication skills are great =)

@GingerRogers: You guys were much further away from each other than Mr. P and I, and I know that flying to Calgary can get expensive. Enjoy every minute with your partner…I know that I will never take Mr. P for granted.

Miss Pudding, I completely agree about long distance making a relationship stronger, and about the fact that if the distance destroys the relationship, it probably wasn’t going to make it anyway. FI and I were together for only four months before he moved a 4-hour drive away, then five months after that, he moved 3,000 miles away. For the next two years, we were in love from coast to coast. It sucked, but didn’t take even a step toward driving us apart.

I made the decision to move to where he was because it just made the most sense. I had just finished grad school and didn’t have a job tying me to any particular location, and while I knew I would miss the area where I’d spent my whole life and where my family and friends lived, I was itching to explore a new place anyway. To top it off, Seattle (where we now live) is pretty much the most awesome city ever.

I’m a Queen’s grad too!!! (Arts ‘03). My sister is still studying there. I hope, if you plan on having children, that they will be able to do the Oil Thigh at a very early age!

I didn’t move to be with FI since I met him after I had moved to Korea, but after a lot of soul searching I decided to stay here with him. That was a very very very big decision!

@LittlestBirds:I know what you mean….even though I complained about the distance all of the time, it didn’t even cross my mind that maybe we should break up. I’ve never been to Seattle, but I heard that it’s beautiful. I’m glad that you are adjusting so well (I think that it will take a little bit more time for me)!

@bamm: We both LOVE Queen’s. We try to go to Kingston at least once a year so that we can walk around the beautiful campus holding hands like we used to :P Our kids will definitely be encouraged to keep up the Oil Thigh tradition ;P

I too have the misfortune of a LDR, but like you I believe it has served to strengthen our relationship. It sure makes things hard, but that just makes looking forward to the wedding day so much sweeter. :)

My FI and I both went to college together and stayed here afterwards. We desperately want to relocate, though, for the sake of our own adventurous souls!

By the way, I am ridiculously excited at this Toronto connection! I am from Ottawa, living in Toronto now while the Mister is in Law School… Are you having a reception up here as well?

I’m from Vancouver and my guy is from souther California. After a year of long distancec he relocated to a city just across the border so that we’re only 50 miles apart and get to spend every weekend together. It’s yet to be seen which side of the border we’ll be on when we marry. I’m very interested to hear about your immigration process!

I’m doing the LDR thing right now… I’m a Canadian marrying an American & I’m moving 3000 miles from my home & native land to be with him!

I’ll never regret it. His hometown is where we’re going to start our lives :)

@cbgg: Wow! That sounds really tough. When we were doing the long distance thing, I kept telling myself that I should be grateful that he lived in Vermont, and not in California! It sounds like your relationship is strong and will survive such a challenge.

I am not really planning on going into a great amount of detail about immigration, but if you have any questions, feel free to send a message my way (we completed both the Canadian immigration papers and the US ones).

@RecessionistaBride: It sounds like we have a lot in common!
