Miss Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

The Ring Part II: Irony in a Blue Box

November 7th, 2009 @ 6:00 pm by Miss Pretzel

It wasn’t lost on me how ironic it was that I, a self professed low maintenance girl, fell in love with THE classic Tiffany engagement ring. When Mr Pretzel and I finally visited Tiffany & Co together we had a lot of fun with the sales associate, Amy. She said hands down I was the easiest future fiance she had worked with. My requirements were simple:

The Tiffany Setting, with a brilliant round cut diamond not to exceed .5 carats in size. That’s all. Color, Clarity? Well, if they carry it – it’s good for me (Tiffany & Co only carries diamonds above a certain threshold. For example, I is the lowest color rating that they will carry).

.5 carat

Source: Tiffany & Co

Pretty simple. He could decide what color or clarity rating was important to him. The size thing though, I was pretty firm about that. We looked at sizes from .45 to .5 and any of them were fine.

Over .5, I really felt like the diamond was too big for my finger. Blasphemy I am sure, but remember, my finger is a mere 3.5, and remember, I’m a no-fuss, low maintenance kind of girl. 1 carat might look fine on larger hands, but on mine it looked like a boulder.

In the time between our visit to Tiffany and when Mr Pretzel proposed, he had a lot of fun ribbing me about my fancy dream ring. I also would give him a hard time about little blue boxes. In the end, I didn’t get a little blue box. Remember how Mr Pretzel hid my ring in the iPod compartment of his Nike Running shoes? I was expecting a box and he was paranoid that I would find a box, so he opted for the Tiffany Blue pouch.

I was kinda sad I didnt get a box.

I was kinda sad I didn’t get a box.

When we went in a couple weeks ago to get it sized again, Amy, our sales associate, wanted to hear all about our engagement story. She loved it, especially how he hid it in his shoe and made me cry. She was surprised to hear that he didn’t get a box with my ring. Mr Pretzel told her that he refused the box because he was convinced I would find it. In his defense, I did frisk him at the airport. When we finally went to pick up my ring, Amy had a surprise for us:

*Squeal! How pretty is it. I totally get the whole blue box thing no

TIffany ring are well worth the price!! My fiance got me the classic as well but in a Princess cut, and i must say i LOVE LOVE LOVE It!! i have a small hand as well so anything more than just 1 stone would’ve looked tacky. What i love most is the complimentary cleaning and resizing, tightening TIffany will do you FOR LIFE! on top of that they EXCELLENT service! THe woman who sold the ring to my finance also gave us a box of complimentary Thank-You notes, which we will probably use after our wedding :)

“Low maintenance”, and yet you frisked your fiancé at the airport in search of your ring? “Low maintenance” and yet you cried because he had not yet proposed after you expected him to?
I enjoy your posts, Miss Pretzel, but I think you may be contradicting yourself a tad.

@Contraditory: I’m glad that you enjoy my posts. But to your point about my self description of low maintenance being contradictory, I disagree. Neither Mr Pretzel or I consider either of those situations “high maintenance”. We do however find the fact that I fell in love with any ring, let alone a Tiffany ring a little ironic and humorous given my nature.

I’m a wash my hair and go kind of girl. I wear Chuck Taylor, ironic tee-shirts and jeans. I’m pretty relaxed about most everything and extremely cost conscious. In the large scheme of things I am a low maintenance girl and easy going.

I hope you continue to enjoy my posts and Mr P and my journey towards the alter. Have a kick a$$ day.

I love how sensible you are! My fiance and I had a ring made from his great-grandmother’s diamonds and people thought I was crazy for choosing to use a slightly under .5 carat stone instead of the 2 carat mountain of a diamond she had at the center of her ring. Like you I have very petite hands and anything larger than .5 carat would look ridiculous AND get in my way. I want to be able to put my hand in my pocket with my ring on, thank-you!

My sister-in-law wears a size 3.5, too! I can’t even fit it on my pinky. I can see what you mean about 1 carat looking too big on your finger - hers has dainty little diamonds that would make it look like a toe ring on my finger, but it looks amazing on her. And now I see the appeal of the blue box, too. *sigh* I know what you mean about being low-maintenance: Girls like us don’t NEED a blue box, but it sure is pretty! (And so is what’s inside. :-))

Mmmmmmmmm, I heart da tiffany’s…

And for the record, I respectfully disagree that frisking someone for an engagement ring makes you high maintenance :)

*swoon… I totally understand the frisking thing. You were excited. :D And I believe every girl (although they won’t admit it) loves that blue box.

@Honeybird: Grrrrl you totally get me! The hands in the jeans thing- spot on! I love that my ring doesn’t get in the way- snag on my knitting, etc. :-)

@Miss Moonbeam: Lol… my fingers, they seem to keep shrinking- although my big-ol-booty doesn’t… oh well!

have you ever tried on a 1 carat ring? I am a size 4 and my ring is just over 1 c. I dont think it looks ridiculous…I love it! the stone was a gift from his mother so there was no way I would have said no thanks it’s too big…buy me something smaller…I guess everyone has their own opinions whn it comes to size..congratulations on your engagement!!1..and I think high or low maintenance we (girls)all want to get that special ring…its just a girl thing i guess.

@Miss Pretzel: I have the same cut/setting (albeit not from Tiffany’s) and I love it! I too have small hands/fingers and my ring is a .80 carat and it’s perfect. I love your ring :o)
