About Mrs. Lamb

B-A-Ewe-tiful

November 8th, 2009 @ 4:25 pm by Mrs. Lamb

The last time Ewe Mother was visiting me, we decided to combine the visit with a hair and makeup trial. I started with my hair down and a clean face, like a good little lamb.

B-A-Ewe-tiful : wedding hair makeup trial Before03 Before03

I had a few pictures of inspiration that revolved mostly around old Hollywood styling, similar to Lauren Bacall’s hair that I added to my overall look inspiration.

Dress sourced from Pronovias.com, shoes by myself, Lauren from Janez World, and earrings from Fincara.

Sigh, but I made an rookie mistake. I said I wanted this particular look, but “was open to other things”. I sealed my fate to not get the look I wanted, instead receiving a myriad of other styles. The first two options, I didn’t even like enough to document with pictures. The last option was OK, but I ended up sporting a half up-do.

After three tries, I made another rookie mistake. I stopped trying to get what I wanted. I said, “OK,” and we moved on to makeup. I thought it might grow on me more or something.

The makeup, I loved! We used Mary Kay mineral makeup. I have no idea what shade anything was in because, quite frankly, I’m not a makeup girl. I’m a Chapstick girl that sometimes wears mascara. I call it “keeping it real for Lamma-ramma-ding-dong”. This look I loved though, and the mineral makeup was super light.

Notice the recurring role that my earrings are playing! Hehehe, I’ve seriously wondered if I could pull them off for every day! I’m thinking for the big day, I may want to go a little more red with the lip color.

After a few hours, I decided, I really didn’t like the hair after all. If I was going to do a half up-do, I wanted more volume on the top. Ram-Dad took this picture after I re-pinned the bobby pins a little:

I liked it better, but I need to remind myself that my idea of what “coy eyes” are, just translates to “scared” on film. I should start practicing for the wedding day now - the list of acceptable looks I can give the camera. LOL.

At the end of the day, I think I’m going to try to do another hair trial where I only take in the old Hollywood pictures where the hair is completely down and ask for exactly what the pictures show. This takes a lot of guts for this little lamb, who wants to please everyone, including her hairdresser! Writing this post and seeing the pictures again though has solidified it in my mind - I have to see what it would look like down!

Did your personality keep you from getting what you wanted during the wedding process? Are you able to speak your mind and get results right away, or does it take time to build up your courage?

I think the hairstyle looks a millions times better with volume on top! I also think you should go for a different color lipstick. Otherwise, the make-up looks great!

You look beautiful! I agree, a darker lip would be good too.

I love your hair accessory! I know what you mean about the coy eye–every time I try to make them my FI and my friends laugh at me!

Here’s to chapstick and mascara! Your makeup looks gorgeous! I like the pink lip color, but I think red would be great (especially with the earrings and that fabulous hairpiece)! The hair is very pretty without a doubt, but it really isn’t very old Hollywood glamor, and I don’t think it really does that hairpiece justice to begin with. Anyhow, definitely not a bad start. I can’t wait to see what you end up with!

I’m awful at speaking my mind, even when it comes to my wedding. Good for you for speaking up - maybe I’ll get a little courage from hearing about your next trial.

The make-up looks great!

I speak my mind right away (and have been called a b*tch for it in the past) but I am generally not disappointed because of it. I find that most people in the service industry appreciate it when I tell them exactly what I want, as long as I’m not rude.

I got lucky with the hair thing because the stylist who did my hair was pretty similar to me. She is sarcastic and jokes around a lot, and I had in mind when I walked in that I wanted my hair up and loose so it stood a bit away from my head, because I have a small head. When my hair is slicked back I look like a pin head.

So she is messing with my hair, pulls it up and says, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but you kind of have a tiny head. I think we should do it so there is some volume while its up.” I wanted to kiss her! I told, “I think we’ll do great together!” I loved my wedding day hair.

She spoke her mind to me, and it was great! I wonder if some people would have been offended by her comment? I wasn’t. Speaking your mind is a good thing to know how to do, definitely work on it if you can!

I think the hair would look better down…hal up you could do easily at home. I like the idea of the darker lip color as well.

Your eyes are so blue! That was my first thought when I saw your pics :)
I think the volume definitely helps the hairstyle but you should totally go back and get what you want! Good luck!

My first hair trial had me sporting Sally Field-style Helmet Hair. The stylist could tell it was going badly, and it just kept getting worse, til she gave up. She actually went to get the manager herself (without me asking) who set me up with another trial (free of charge). She also looked at the style I wanted (which was vintage-y) and said, “oh, XXXX is the right person to do this. She can do it in a heartbeat.” And she did.
So–my suggestion to you would be to try that salon or a different one until you find someone who ’specializes’ in the look you’re going for. I wouldn’t have known to ask that question, but it seemed to get the right result!

Your re-pinning certainly saved that hair, but good look trying to get what you really want.

I am so glad you created a post about this. I went through 3 makeup trials because of my inability to be assertive, courgatous and speak my mind. I just gave up after trying to communicate exactly what I wanted to 3 different makeup artists and not getting exactly the look I wanted. I even sent them a youtube vide on how to recreate the look from a celebrity artist, and still they couldn’t get it. So, my wedding is in 2 weeks and I will be wearing a makeup look that I can live with but is not my “Angelina Grey Smokie Eye with Nude lip”

I just realized that it didn’t come down to courage, but that the artists that I were hiring just did not have the capabilities, and with my venue being in a rural out of town area, i just compromised…

You are beautiful enough to try the Grace Kelly look, puffy on top, low chignon (google Grace Kelly hair styles, and see what I mean)…I think it would be so lovely on you…

Ok… so please dont take my post at being rude because I think you are a very beautiful woman.. but as a hairdresser And a make-up artist I am going to tell you .. DO NOT Settle perhaps even find a new hairdresser because that hair is not flattering. I do realize it was just a trial run but honestly it is very poorly done. You could do this at home and save yourself the money!
The look you posted on the inspiration is definately Old hollywood glamour and the front has been side parted and appears to be finger waved… if you didnt want to do actual fingerwaves any good hairdresser should be able to achieve the same look with a curling iron.
You could also try a smiliar style in the front with a low side chigon and placeing your fascinator at the base.

The makeup look is almost there but not quiet.. in the second to last picture your makeup looks about two shades two dark.. but in the bottom picture it looks fine .. so you might want to be careful to make sure she uses the right color. I also agree you need a darker lip color expecially since you are not going with a Heavy Eye… I personally think you have beautiful hair and skin tone and should go for a shade of red. Try to blue toned red.. it should work well on yours skin tone and make your teeth look whiter

I hope you do not take offense to my honest opinion. You are very beautiful and I hope you find someone who can make your hair and makeup dreams come alive for you wedding day. You must give you hairdresser clear direction though dont be afraid to speak your mind. If you dont do it before your wedding day you will never achieve the look you want.

I think of myself as a fairly assertive person, but I have the worst time with hair stylists. I have never once in my life walked out of a salon, be it a $100 haircut or a $10 trim, wanting to do anything but sweep it into a hat or headband and go home to restyle it and mask the look until it grows out a bit. Last year, I thought I had found a woman I loved, who worked with me and had a great discussion with me about the style I was going for and got really excited about making that happen for me. I went back six months later and she was in a bad mood and gave me the most absurdly awful haircut of my life. I asked for bangs and she made it clear that she hated bangs just in general principle and proceeded to chop mine to half an inch long on one side and an inch and a half on the other. I had asked for bangs that hit my eyebrows. WHAT. I had to part my hair on the opposite side for three months to cover up what was essentially a bald spot on my forehead. Yeah, and this was like a $65 haircut that I was paying for on a grad student budget. Needless to say I didn’t have any qualms about requesting a different stylist the next time I went in. Does anyone have any insight into why some stylists are such divas? I’m sure not all of them are, but I would love to meet one of the nice ones some time. Anyway as a result of this lifelong traumatic hair saga, I’m terrified about my wedding hair, since I am certain I’ll hate whatever any stylist does to it. I’ll probably procrastinate the hair trial for much longer than is advisable.

Thanks all! This is helping build my courage to go back! The hair dresser had come to my apartment and didn’t have her big barrel curling iron with her, which she said would be better for the inspiration style I originally showed her (like FutureMrs.Harless said about a curling iron). She’s done my makeup before and it’s shown up beautifully in photographs, so the shade issue may be my lousy photo editing skills - lol. I appreciate the feedback ladies!

I think sometimes as brides we are so willing to settle or compromise or WIMP out because we don’t want to be perceived as BRIDEZILLA-esque.. FutureMrs.Harless (above) said it very well… you are a beauty, your inspiration picture is lovely… the result of your trial, not so much. Stay strong, get what you want…no wimps!

I think you should go back and get what you want, too. If for nothing else, to get pictures of exactly how it should look for w-day, and to give your stylist a little practice! Your makeup looks gorgeous!

I know what you mean about feeling akward with the stylist… she is the professional, so sometimes it’s hard to tell them what you don’t like after they’ve done. I’ve had a lot of bad experiences with coloring since my hair is so dark.

Best of luck and be strong! ;)

I want to see it down old hollywood style too. I hope you can get the message across, because I think it will be just perfect!

(i would consider the darker lip color too, if you think you can swing it!)
