Mrs. Star's Picture
Mrs. Star, New York City Age and Occupation: 22, Actress Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Casting Assistant Wedding Date: October 2009 Venue: Ceremony: The Kraine Theatre, Reception: Midtown Loft & Terrace About Me: I’m a professional actress who’s always had New York City in her blood and I'm finally getting the chance to make a home in Manhattan with my fiancé, my dog, and my big dreams! I love polka dots, craft projects, Dunkin’ Donuts’ iced coffee, and anything sparkly. I’m having a blast planning our elegant/dramatic/New York City/acting-themed/largely-DIY wedding and am thrilled to be the youngest current Miss Blogger!
About Mrs. Star

I have to say, our honeymoon was my fourth time to Europe, and Greece was the seventh European country that I’ve visited. But I have never tasted such amazing food before. When my MOH and I visited France several summers back, we lost over five pounds each at the end of three weeks, despite my love of baguettes and chocolate. When I went to Scotland two years ago, I was seriously desperate for some American food after ten days.

So while I was hopeful, I wasn’t exactly expecting to be wowed by the food in Greece. Boy, was I ever wrong! You know the “freshman 15″? Well, I gained the Honeymoon 6. Six pounds is a lot of eating in two weeks!

There is some truly wonderful food to be had in Greece, even on a budget. We mostly stuck to having pastries or a light breakfast late in the morning, and dinner at a restaurant that our Frommer’s Guide to Greece recommended.

IMG_480

This is part of what we ate the first night we were in Athens.

We ate at a little taverna in the Plaka District where the waiters brought around a tray of 20 mezedes (or appetizer-sized portions) and you picked five of them to eat between the two of you. These are three of our dishes: some roasted pork, Greek yoghurt, and sausages that Mr. Star is still talking about. Yum!

IMG_484

This is a restaurant we ate at on our second night in Athens. Don’t you just love the open-air seating and the dreamy blue chairs? There was even a view of the Acropolis. We just sat and enjoyed our dinner slowly and wrote all of our postcards while enjoying the gorgeous weather and atmosphere! The Greeks do not believe in rushing meals, and we were all for taking our time on our honeymoon! You know what they say, “When in Athens…”

IMG_488

This is a shot of our first run-in with Saganaki, or Greek fried cheese. I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing it is, doused with lemon and eaten on toasted pita bread slices…

IMG_48902

Mr. Star ate his whole portion with his eyes closed. THAT’s how much he loved it.

IMG_49201

This coffee chain became my saving grace while we were in the Athens area. They served expresso frozitos, which were like Starbucks’ frappuccinos. I had a lot of those puppies while I was trying to experiment with which Greek coffee would feed my caffeine addiction the best. Hmm, maybe I know where those 6 pounds came from after all…

IMG_493

I spent a lot of time planning our itineraries with my Frommer’s Guide… and writing in our travel journal… and, umm, eating chocolate. Yeah, the Greeks make excellent desserts!

IMG_51002

This only LOOKS like dessert. Actually, this was what I was served for breakfast! A waffle is in there somewhere, buried under melted chocolate, whipped cream, and chopped walnuts, with a ducky animal cracker for good show. I couldn’t even finish it, although I did give it the old college try.

IMG_51003

About five days in, I discovered the Nescafe frappe, which is about the closest thing I could find to American iced coffee. When they ask you if you want them to make it with milk and sugar, always say yes. Trust me.

IMG_52901

We were very amused to discover that even the Greeks love pigs in a blanket. Not only do they love pigs in a blanket, they make them in EPIC proportions! I mean, look at that thing!

IMG_52902

Mr. Star discovered cheese pies on Santorini, and I’m pretty sure he ate one for breakfast every day after that. Yes, he really really likes cheese. I have to admit, they were pretty yummy. They taste kinda like big, flaky croissants with melted cheese inside!

IMG_530

A couple of nights, we just got souvlaki pitas to-go and sat out on the benches in Fira on Santorini to watch the sunsets. When you see my sunset pictures in a later post, you’ll understand why!

IMG_54506

Of course, we had to try the Greek national dessert — baklava! I loved the nuts and Mr. Star loved the sweet, syrupy drizzled sauce. I swear, we usually eat really healthy at home (salads! fruit! brown rice!).

IMG_54403

We ordered saganaki whenever we could. It really was that good. I looked it up (my go-to favorite is The Food Network), and apparently it’s made from kasseri cheese, which I was able to find at a local cheese shop. It seems pretty easy to make, so I know what I’m making for Mr. Star’s birthday. ;)

If you’re wiping the drool off your keyboard, I don’t blame you. It really was as good as it looks (and I have the tight jeans to prove it!). I wish I had taken more pictures of some of our delicious entrees, like the moussaka we had or the pork gyros or even all the french fries we ate (did you know the Greeks make excellent french fries? I didn’t either), but it was usually so yummy looking that we dug right in.

At any rate, if you are going to Greece or thinking of going to Greece, don’t worry, you won’t starve! Just writing all this reminds me that it’s gym time! Stand by for more Greek goodness!

Yes, I totally agree! The food was amazing. We also had chocolate-drizzled waffles, mmm. I had to have the saganaki, of course, but the Dude HATES cheese! I made him try it, and I got it on video, but I still couldn’t convert him, haha. I think my favorite thing was gyros and Greek yogurt. Everything was good, who am I kidding?

I am loving your recaps!! Mr. Tron and I haven’t gone on our honeymoon yet, or even booked it, because we’re waiting until after I finish school in December, but as of right now, Greece is our destination! We change our mind all the time, but it definitely meets all of our criteria. Mr. Tron’s criterion: Good food. My criteria: Pretty views and lots of history. After reading this post, I’m sure that Mr. Tron won’t be disappointed!

Mmmm saganaki. There’s a restaurant in Maryville, MO called A&G’s that not only serves saganaki, they pour alcohol on it and set it on FIRE at you table before dousing it with lime juice. SO. GOOD. ^_^

@SpinningJenny: We didn’t get any lit on fire in Greece, but there is a restaurant near my Mom’s house in FL that does that — it’s so fun! And tasty, of course ;)

I’m pretty sure that I could eat the cheese pies that Mr. Star loved so dearly every single day. Everything that you posted pictures of looks delish! Mr. FF makes fun of me taking pictures of our food when we’re on vacation, but I like remembering what we had. :)

Your report back from Greece has me wanting to hop back on the plane now!

Glad you enjoyed Greece and some of the more popular dishes.

Perhaps something on my site will evoke more memories and another trip!

Damn Mrs. Star! It’s only mid-afternoon here, and now all I want to do is to eat fried cheese.
@Mrs. Mouse: Seriously? The Dude hates cheese? I don’t even know how that could be possible.

we just had greek the other night, but the food in this post doesn’t compare!

I have to say, Mr. Star is rocking some awesome eyelashes!! (I wish mine looked that good!)
Did you just love seeing the ring on his finger during tje honeymoon? I stared at my hubby’s ring as much as I had stared at my own e-ring after the engagement!

I’m seriously debating going to Greece now. Throw the honeymoon budget out the window! I don’t care, we’re going to Greece! ;) Where did you stay, if you don’t mind me asking?

@LatteLove: Mr. Star does have some rocking eyelashes. I tell him all the time how jealous I am and that I hope our kids get his eyelashes and not mine! It’s not fair for a man to have such awesome eyelashes that he doesn’t need ;)

And yeah, I adore seeing his ring on, even now. I think it is drop dead sexy!

I am so hungry now, thanks! There is a place near me thats called George’s Greek Cafe and they have the saganaki. I knew from the second I saw the picture of it without looking at the description what it was. It is the best!!! Ill have to check out the recipe from Food Network, they way they do it at the restaurant is to bring it out in a skillet and set it on fire at the table which would cause my apartment to probably burn down!

I studied abroad in England and visited 11 European countries while I was there. I have to agree with you that out of all the places I went Greece had the most amazing food. I still talk about it 5 years later!

Yum! Detroit has a big Greek population, so saganaki and baklava are always available! I still get nervous when they light the saganaki at the table, it looks like it will set my hair on fire!
