A Not-Damask-Bride

November 10th, 2009 @ 3:14 pm by Mrs. Pudding

The way I see it, damask is the undisputed champion of weddings these days. Wedding blogs are full of inspiration for the “damask bride”. I have to admit, I love the idea of damask. It’s romantic, it provides a theme and central focus to the wedding, and gives texture to the decor. However, I had a problem with jumping on this bandwagon. I really wanted to find a theme that had a similar feel, but was a little bit more unique.

After deciding on the ivory and navy blue colour scheme, I began searching for inspiration. I had this idea in my head to find striped table cloths. I didn’t manage to find any, but I did find this:

A Not-Damask-Bride : wedding color schemes decor Toile N

(source)

This is Toile de Jouy, and according to wikipedia:

Toile de Jouy, sometimes abbreviated to simply “toile“, is a type of decorating pattern consisting of a usually white or off-white background on which a repeated pattern depicting a fairly complex scene, generally of a pastoral theme such as (for example) a couple having a picnic by a lake. Toiles also often consist of an arrangement of flowers.

I love it! I love that it’s 17th century France, I love that it’s pastoral, that it’s floral, and that it depicts love! I am going to use it as an accent throughout the wedding, although Mama Pudding has expressed concern that using this pattern for tablecloths might be a bit much. :P

Were you inspired by a textile?

We have a crazy patterned table linen, which would have been too much on all the tables so we used it on a third of the tables and coordinating colors on the other two-thirds. The print is carried over in the napkins on the solid color tables. This could be an option for you - the print, navy, and white.

Yay toile!! I love it! It has been one of my inspirations and I’m definitely using it to accent my wedding. I agree that toile might be a little much for the tablecloths, but it could like nice as a table runner. We’re using toile linen napkins and I think that will be good. Our invites also have some toile, and I want to incorporate it into other paper products — maybe a light toile background to the programs, or a border, etc. Would love to hear more ideas! :)

Toille would be so perfect with a blue and white theme. You should be able to find tons of stuff.

@bluedec: That’s a great idea! Maybe a damask print on the cake table, or the guest book table only?

@Marinara: Did you purchase your napkins, or are you renting them?

Toile is awesome — and I have to agree with the others, linen napkins would be great! (but I’m biased, because I’m in the “sewing my own napkins” camp.) :)

That’s a great print for a wedding with navy in the color scheme. Move over, Damask! Pudding is leading the trend of Toile brides! :-)

I love it! And I love that it’s different from damask while still having the same flair. Can’t wait to see how you end up using it.

I love toile - one of my favorite fabric prints. This is a lovely version too! Sometimes it had a little too many sheep in it for my taste.

@Gilneas: I agree. I’m trying to keep it more floral that livestock-y.

Good for you for not picking damask. I’m not much of a damask fan myself! Some girls can pull it off in their design, though!

I’m sewing the toile napkins. I couldn’t find any to rent, and although I found some I could buy, I didn’t find any in my colors (or exactly to my taste) and it would have been waaaaaay more expensive than making them! :)

What a great twist on the normal inspirations! Napkins are totally easy to sew in no time flat!
