Our “Engagement Party”

November 10th, 2009 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Pudding

Our Engagement Party : wedding engagement party legal W6

After we got engaged, it was time to plan our civil ceremony, or our “Engagement Party” as we liked to refer to it. We had to get legally married to begin the immigration process, which we wanted to start ASAP. It was really important to us (or rather me) that we have a big and beautiful Catholic wedding, and it was just not possible to plan the type of wedding that I (we) wanted in a short amount of time. So, we decided to have a civil ceremony first, and then the wedding of my dreams at a later date. Also, we wanted to make sure that our first days and weeks as newlyweds were spent together, which would not have been possible if we didn’t have a civil marriage first. So, we got to planning!

***On a side note, when we had our civil ceremony in September of 2008, it seemed like we were the only couple on earth doing this! Now it seems to be happening all the time (see Miss Dachshund, Miss Poodle, and Miss Moonbeam). You might even say that it’s becoming a new wedding trend… I am glad to have jumped on the bandwagon!***

Mr. Pudding and I decided that we wanted to have our immediate family present, because even though we did not consider this to be “the real thing”, we thought that it was a significant and important step. It was important to me that this day be special, but I did not want it to overshadow the actual wedding day. Matthew’s family traveled from Vermont for the weekend, and we hired an officiant to come to Mama Pudding’s house and perform the ceremony.

Our Engagement Party : wedding engagement party legal W1 We did the ceremony in my mom’s living room. It was simple and lovely. I wore a cream shift dress with gold detailing and gold heels that were way too high. Mr. Pudding wore a suit that I purchased for him as an engagement present, and a gold tie to match my outfit! The whole colour scheme of the event was shads of creams, golds, and browns.

Our Engagement Party : wedding engagement party legal W2 Our officiant was amazing. He had a wonderful presence, and the ceremony he performed was just beautiful. Before the ceremony, I kept saying that this was like the marriage equivalent of doing my taxes. But during it, I couldn’t keep the tears at bay! I can’t remember quite what he said, but I know it was very touching.

Our Engagement Party : wedding engagement party legal W3

This is our wedding party. My sister and brother, and Mr. P’s sister and brother. The girls even accidentally coordinated in chocolate brown dresses! I made my bouquet out of three orange calla lilies, and wrapped the stems in a gold ribbon.

After the ceremony, we had toasts. Mr. P is not a man of many words, but his toast was perfect: “To the first of the many beautiful steps that we are about to take together.” You can see Mama Pudding smiling at us in the background.

We sat down to a beautiful dinner together; Mama Pudding really outdid herself! This was also a great time for our families to get to know one another better.

And what would a non-wedding be without cake! I think our mutual love for anything sweet is clear in our expressions.

All in all, our “Engagement Party” was fabulous. A word to all of you fortunate enough to be having a small wedding, but worried that you won’t get that big bridal feeling: as long as you are surrounded by the ones you love, and the man that you are committing to is your soul mate, it will be the most beautiful day of your life.

Did you have a civil ceremony before the “official” wedding? If you did, who was in attendance?

@AliOopsieDaisy: I got it at The Bay (it’s like a Canadian Macy’s) on a discount rack. It was under $50. I wasn’t in love with it when I first bought it, but couldn’t find anything else that was bridal enough. I loved it on the day of, though.

Hi Miss Pudding,

I did just what you did, for a different reason and I am having a Cahtolic wedding as well. I wanted to make sure you knew all the steps you’re going to have to take in order to actually be able to get married in the Catholic Church. Since you are now legally married, which the Church does not think is right to do by the way, you’re going to have to get something called “sanation.” I don’t know where you live, but you should speak to your priest as soon as you can if you haven’t already. He has to file paperwork with and have the Bishop sign off. I was completely unaware of all of this when I was legally married, and thought you should know too. I was shocked when i read what the Church thinks about people who do this - do you know you’re not supposed to receive communion if you are married legally but not through the Church yet? Intense. I would have emailed you privately about this - but I can’t seem to find out how. I hope I didn’t offend you!!!

We also had a separate engagement party/civil ceremony at the city hall back in January 2009 and the wedding was in July 2009. Only my parents, his parents, and his sister were present. After the short ceremony we went to a small restaurant and then to our house for dessert.
Separating the civil ceremony from the religious ceremony is actually pretty common in some countries in Europe.
Congrats!!!

@Marisa3: I am not offended at all! In fact, I am very touched that you would want to warn me about this.

I have already talked to our priest, and he did not express any concern. Because I am part of a Polish parish, this type of thing happens all of the time (many Polish-Canadians meet their partners while visiting in Poland and must have civil marriages for immigration purposes), so perhaps our priest is a little more tolerant or well versed in the subject? Also, because of Poland’s communist past, until recently a couple getting married in the country had to have separate civil and Catholic ceremonies. This still happens in many European countries (France definitely does this). Perhaps this accounts for the tolerance of my priest?

I haven’t run into the problems you mentioned yet, but will be sure to update everyone if I do!

@mandM: I often feel like I will have the best of both worlds: a small, romantic ceremony, and a big, fancy party!

OH GOOD! I’m glad you have your stuff together!! I don’t think it’s a matter of tolerance, but I also don’t know what I’d call it. Again, I was shocked! And a bit miffed to be honest. Anyway, Your pictures are awesome and it looked like a great day! Congrats!

I thought it was funny to read your comment that you weren’t in love with your dress when you first bought it. The first thing I thought was “what a perfect dress”. Glad it grew on you the day of though, you looked stunning!

@Marisa3: I was a bit caught off guard by the “your baptismal certificate must not be older than six months” request. Having been baptised in Poland, this was a super annoying request because you have to get this from your original parish at birth. I’m planning to write a post about this!
