American Bridol

November 11th, 2009 @ 12:57 pm by Ms Potato Chips

Might I offer a humble contribution to the wedding lexicon?

Bridol -noun- 1. a bride who becomes your idol or role model; 2. a previously engaged woman (or man) whose planning style and general attitude invoked feelings of respect and admiration.

I’ve had many bridols. It goes without saying that I pretty much worship all past and present bees for their design skills, DIY savvy, can-do attitudes, and general awesomeness. I’ve also been lucky enough to have some real-life bridols close to my heart.

There’s been my super-organized pal whose dress cost even less than mine, who forgave me when I missed (missed!) her beautiful wedding to study Shakespeare in London (bad, right? I know).

There’s been my lovely friend who pulled off a gorgeous, romantic Boston wedding. She provided the bridesmaids with lollipop bouquets at the rehearsal and flip flops to wear at the reception; no detail was overlooked.

And there’s been my drinking-and-eating buddy who threw a destination wedding. A like-minded soul, she tossed traditions aside and would only concede to a shower if it was not referred to as such. And if there were no presents. And if all we did was drink wine and eat taquitos on the floor. It was awesome (did I even have to write that? You know it was).

Sometimes, when you’re caught in the thick of planning—decisions to make, budgets to balance, research to do, pressure-pressure-pressure—it helps to look up to those brides who’ve gone before you, and draw your inspiration from their successes.

Do you have any real-life bridols?

I like the term. Mrs. Kitten was definitely my “bridol” since we planned our weddings together and hers was a few months before mine. Oh yeah, and she introduced me to weddingbee!

I love new words! I’ve had so many “bridols”, but most of all, my sis-in law/MOH who did DIY before DIY was cool and picked out re-wearable BM dresses. PChips you rock ;-)

Brilliant term! One my my bridesmaids is my total bridol. She was able to put together a beautiful, heartfelt wedding with tons of personalized details - on a budget, from a distance, in only 5 months! She’s amazing.

All the bees in the hive! They’re all so creative and willing to help, it’s a nice departure from what you see on the Bridezilla shows!

I love the term Bridol. I think it’s a necessity to have Bridols when planning because they are the people you can turn to when you need some help/advice!

All the bees! In particular I have been watching Miss Sparkler and Miss Crepe with baited breath. DIY is what gets me goin’!

I will give kudos to the TWO weddings I’ve ever been to, though–neither of the ladies wore white dresses.
