Lavender Love

November 11th, 2009 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

When it comes to shabby, country chic, I think lavender flowers take the (wedding) cake for reflecting that sensibility. It’s not a flashy, overstated flower; it’s sweet, simple and smells divine.

I thought about using lavender for my bouquet. Something like this:

I do love the idea but it doesn’t really go with our color scheme and it’s not quite what I’m envisioning for my bouquet. It would smell so lovely, though…

I found this picture on Oncewed and was head-over-heels for the look, especially when arranged in the yellow gravy boat. So simple, yet perfect.

Then I found these two pictures and suddenly, a way to incorporate lavender into our wedding became clear.

I’ve decided to change our favor idea a bit and instead of putting dried flowers in little vases at the tables, I want to make little lavender bundles and place them next to the menu card at each setting. The mini-lavender bouquets will each have a little tag on them with our wedding date (6/2010) on it and a quote on the other side.

I hope our guests take the lavender bunches home and think of our (hopefully) fun, beautiful wedding whenever they smell them.

What do you think? Do you like lavender? Should I do something else for favors in addition to this?

Oooh, I like this idea! Or you could tuck two little sprigs into the napkin like in the inspiration photo! Or you can have your guests toss lavender at you as you exit. Or all 3!

love the lavender bundle, really classy but fun at the same time. if you have some extra funds maybe do an edible favor as well, nothing beats getting to take something home to snack on later!

I remember reading somewhere that lavender is a great alternative to rice/birdseed/bubbles. It looks good in pictures (won’t reflect like bubble) and smells nice when stepped on :)

Great idea! I love the idea of lavender as a favor — maybe people could make it into sachets once they take it home?

We got engaged at a place that used lavender in all of their scented things… I wasn’t a huge fan before but now I loooove it so much, as it reminds me always of our engagement weekend! I always have something lavender scented around now :)

Very sweet and appropriate, especially considering lavender’s association with love and devotion!

I am planning a very rustic-esque wedding too. At first, I thought I HATED lavender. But then my mom took me to a u-pick lavender farm, and I fell in love! I think my maids and I are going to have our luncheon at the farm a few days before the wedding, and cut the lavender we will need to fill in the sunflower/wildflower/lavender centerpieces my mom is making. I don’t know if they have u-pick farms in NY, but I loved our trip. It was so easy and relaxing to pick the lavender and super affordable. The lady who ran the farm we visited also had tons of hand made items, like satchels, that would be perfect favors!

To play devil’s advocate - lavender might be great for some of your female guests, but I strongly suspect that very few of the men will take any home.

Someone I was reading about did lavender sachets for favors along with a note explaining the uses of lavender at home. I love lavender and wish we could incorporate it. We even live just a short drive from the lavender capital of North America, Sequim WA, and I go nuts imagining doing our e-pics in the French-esque fields of little purple flowers. Who knew that the one time that FI has an opinion about flowers, it would have to be an irrational loathing of lavender?

I love the idea of lavender for all of those things. I study plants in college right now and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is my favorite, and it is the theme for my wedding. I’m doing dried lavender and other dried flowers with my natural theme. I’m decorating my cake with it, having it on tables and in napkins, and in my bouquet. I’m not throwing it though because my eldest sister did and it stuck in her hair pretty badly, but it did smell wonderful!
