Mrs. Pudding's Picture
Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/Vermont Age and Occupation: 26, High School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: August 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall Reception About Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.
About Mrs. Pudding

Our wedding is a go! With the booking of a church and a reception venue, we are officially getting married in July, 2010! It’s exciting and scary all at the same time.

So, here is what we have so far:

We will be getting married at my childhood church. It is a Polish Roman Catholic church, which means that most of the congregation is Polish. There are many churches like this around the Greater Toronto Area, as there is a very large Polish community here:

I have been going to church here since we came to Canada in 1992, and I can’t imagine getting married anywhere else. Plus, that large staircase makes for a great group shot location after the ceremony!

The inside of the church is not breathtaking, but at least the ugly red carpet that used to cover the altar (and that I often vacuumed during the summer as a part time job) has been replaced with marble.

Our reception will take place at our local Polish cultural hall… which is actually much nicer than it sounds:

I would say that 75% of the weddings that I have ever attended have been at this hall, and as a little girl I used to dream about being married here as well. Because I am quite active in the Polish community, I know this venue quite well. Getting married here is kind of like getting married at home - I know where everything is. I know all of the rules, and which ones I can break. :P

Unfortunately, the first person to greet me and my new husband upon entrance to our reception will be this guy:

Any ideas on how to cover him up would be greatly appreciated!

Are you getting married somewhere that has meaning to you and your childhood?

Can you hang fabric over it?

I’m with Miss Spaniel- look into hanging a piece of fabric over it. Maybe with a banner saying “Just married!” or “Mr. and Mrs. Pudding Wedding!” or something similar. its difficult to tell from the picture…but maybe you can make the space into a fauxtobooth! Good luck with it!

An idea I’ve seen before is to place a photo of you two (from your engagement party maybe?) inside the frames of photos where you don’t want to see the original painting/picture, then you can cover up the other stuff with fabric and decorations?

@misscalico: That’s a wonderful idea! I’ll have to check with the hall to make sure that they are not insulted that I put my own face over their celebrated war hero:P I can picture it looking beautiful though!

What about a chalkboard that is covered by something that has the seating chart on it? Easily rolled into place?

We have a random drum set that we aren’t allowed to move and it’s right behind where our sweetheart table is going to be…not he prettiest backdrop I’ve ever seen, so my FH and I decided to rent an extra red table cloth and cover the the plexi cover in front of it, and then drape a fake evergreen garland across the top.
Use fabric and photos and you should be fine. I like the idea of the fauxtobooth too!

What about a flower wall like what Miss Moonbeam is crafting?

@Miss Pudding: ha! Yeah, celebrated war hero… asking is probably a good idea :) I like the flower wall and the chalkboard ideas for covering up some of the other stuff though! The seating chart might be good if it’s at the entrance to the reception hall and everyone will have to walk by it!

Yes, perhaps some type of wall that you could just set in front of it, instead of having to hang something up would be easier.

I second — or third? — the fabric idea!

Hmm if you want to dress up some hung fabric, you could project some stuff onto it.

@Miss Moonbeam: Hmm….that might not be a bad idea. Especially since this is in the entrance/hallway. Perhaps our picture slide show or something like that!

I think you should put a little paper top hat on him! I’d think that would be pretty funny. But, if you want to actually cover him up then fabric would be a great option.

@Amanda: Haha….again, the decorated war hero part might prohibit any “makeovers”

I agree with the fabric idea - if they hall doesn’t allow that, then maybe hide the picture with the seating chart or escort card area?

If you’re not allowed to hang fabric over it/attach anything to the walls, you could have an easel with a large picture of the two of you/seating chart At the right height, it could block the view of the war hero as well as prevent breaking any rules/objections they may have attaching things to the walls.

Ah gindobre! Hurrah for a fellow pole. :) When some of our distant cousin’s got married a few years back, they had the longest stol lat toast ever. Something like 6 rounds of the darn thing.

Back on the subject, is that metal barrier around the picture permanent? If so, that might cause some issues with a escort card area, or with folks not being able to see the seating chart well. Similar to @missfrenchfries idea, maybe a large tree or just something decor wise that they could use again. Or, just put a paper hat on him. :)

what if you hung a portrait of the same person smiling or joyful or giving a thumbs up or something? Like, he is usually solemn and serious, but your wedding makes even him jump for joy!

@peanutlovespumpkin: You literally made me “laugh out loud”. That is the best idea thus far!

The interior of your church is a million times better looking than that of the one we attend. I wanted so badly to take the church I used to attend in Connecticut and just transport it across the country to Seattle so we could get married in its gorgeous, light-filled sanctuary! The one we happily attend now is windowless and about as physically charming as the inside of my coat closet. Oh well, I have no trouble bringing the sacred space into the outdoors, since God is everywhere anyhow. (Plus our venue has sheep pastures, okay, AWESOME.)
