An Ode to Beautiful Lighting

November 12th, 2009 @ 3:32 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

Lights and lanterns, you brighten (ha!) my wedding world and I can’t stop looking pictures of magical outdoor weddings with incredible lighting. So much so that while I was once certain of my lighting concepts, I am now a doubting Thomas. (Side note: Is there a female version of the phrase doubting Thomas? Doubting Thomasina?)

Let’s start with lanterns. I love this shot with the setting sun pouring light into the room. Gorgeous.

I had never considered rectangular lanterns until I saw this picture. The bamboo poles give the overall look a slight Asian flare and it reminds me of a Japanese garden party. So elegant.

Tiny lights give an intimate party feel. Le bliss.

These big lights are called cafe lights, I believe. Color me in love.

I love the way these lights look in pictures. They give the shot an old-fashioned, vintage theme.

Our wedding’s going to be in a big tent and I think any one of these ideas will look wonderful but I can’t decide which one to pursue.

What lighting do you like? Lanterns? Cafe lights? Perhaps a mix of the two?

That third picture looks like fairyland! So romantic. I love the rectangular lights, but the round lanterns have my heart. They’re so beautiful and big! But cafe lights are pretty too. I guess it depends on what look you’re going for…

I love café lights and I think it would look great even with a couple lanterns.

I love the look of both mixed together. I have 54 chinese lanterns in white, green and light blue I’m using for my wedding. I hope the pics turn out as nice as these ones!

I would do both! You could string the cafe lights back and forth over the space (like the bamboo pole pictures) & sprinkle in lanterns here and there. I love it!

Cafe lights and lanterns would be a wonderful mix. I wish we could do both, but alas…we can’t hang anything in our venue.

We hung about 120 lanterns in our tent and then strung white christmas lights around the perimeter.

I really love the globe lanterns. I’ve seen them a lot in wedding pictures, but they still feel so unique and other-worldly when they’re all floating up there!

I just love paper lanterns, when I look at my pics from the wedding, seeing the lanterns make me happy!

For a tent I’m thinking you should go with the lanterns over the cafe lights, even though cafe lights are so darling!

Hmm, they’re all so good. Maybe cafe lights at the edge of the tent and lanterns inside.

I love the idea of mixing the two. The string lights around the perimeter and draped across where the tables are. And use the lanterns over the dance floor. Just a personal favorite of mine. :)
