Changing Names in Chiiicago.

November 12th, 2009 @ 6:13 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

Whew, as far as changing names goes, I’m grateful to just be changing a few cards and documents rather than changing one of these babies:

Claudia is one lucky lady I’d guess. Anyway.

I was absolutely dreading the whole process from start to finish. It seemed very mysterious and confusing and like it would be difficult.

Fortunately, I found this fabulous website for Illinois residents to work through the name changing process. It walks through step by step exactly what order you should do things in, the forms you’ll need to fill out for each office, and even form letters that you can modify and send out to notify your banks and other organizations about the change. And the website is free, free, FREE!

And, still, I put everything off. I absolutely could not motivate myself to go and pick up a copy of my marriage certificate, the Holy Grail to changing your name. Please keep in mind that my work is less than a 10 minute walk from the office where I can get the certificate, and their office hours (8AM - 5PM) work perfectly with my schedule to allow me to make it over there. Heh.

Once I finally went there, I was in and out in less than 5 minutes! And about $20 poorer. I paid for two copies of the certificate (one copy is like $15, a second is $4, and I thought it was smart to have a backup so as not to have to go back).

The next week, I headed on over to the Social Security Office to apply for my new card. Their office hours are not so friendly - 9AM-4PM. What?! Really? Ugh. So I went over my lunch hour and after a 45 minute wait my number was finally called (I am guessing that I was lucky and this was a relatively short wait for that office).

My big concern was that I was taking my maiden name and moving it to my middle name, and then taking Mr. S’s last name. There is nowhere on their website that states you can do this. From asking around and reading message boards, I learned that whatever you put on your application for your new Social Security card, you should be fine as long as you have your marriage certificate to prove the change. My name change on my card was accepted without the bat of an eye!

Less then a week later, I had my new Social Security card in my hand. And better yet, your Social Security card is FREE!

Feeling powerful with my new card and excited to put things into motion, I headed over to the DMV to get my new license. Mind you, the license I had was the one I got when I turned 21 and still had my parents’ address on it (where I haven’t lived for 5 years). I was sad to part with my old friend, but excited to finally have something with my new name on it to flash around (since flashing around one’s Social Security card tends to be frowned upon).

There’s an “Express” DMV in Chicago’s Loop and I went there after work on a Friday (they are also open until 5PM!). There was NO WAIT, people. I worked with the nicest lady who automatically asked me if I was moving my maiden name to my middle name and chatted about how much she loved my new Korean last name.

$5 and one surprisingly good picture later, I had my license!

Note to self: practice writing new signature before signing a card I will have for years to come. D’oh!

I’ve since sent out all letters to my various accounts using the handy dandy form letter I found online, and am waiting for new cards and changed accounts.

This weekend Mr. S and I are heading over to my bank, where we will change my name on all of those accounts AND add him onto the accounts, thereby starting down the road of the dreaded (on my part) joint account. Must. Stop. Buying. Clothes.

Part of me was sad to leave my maiden name behind, so getting to bring it right along with me and having it be such an easy process to do so has been fabulous. I officially feel like a Mrs.!

Did you have a hard time working the system to change your name?

I too had a very simple name change process. I was dreading it but it was actually very simple (aside from the annoying wait times at the SS office and DMV). I live in CO.

I was so pumped to change the name I went to the SS office the day after I got my marriage cert in the mail : ) Have the SS card now and am dreading the DVM. Plus did a post wedding chop and the bangs are….short….so I may wait another week or so until I don’t look like a 7th grader in my license pic : )

Social Security wouldn’t let me put my maiden name as my middle name (I guess because I signed my marriage license with my unmarried name). It really, really sucked. I went to the parking lot and cried.

I couldn’t wait to change my name either, but when we got our marriage certificate they had my name wrong so I had to go and get it changed and then wait another 5 weeks. it sucked.

Wow… that all sounds so… simple. Part of the reason I don’t want to change my name is the hassle!

@Ellen: That’s so strange! Our marriage license just showed my full maiden name and his full name, but nothing to do with my new name. So sorry they didn’t let you!

@KMSull: Yeah, for the most part it was such a swift process! I’m sure I’ll have plenty of little odds and ends as I think of different people to notify that aren’t majorly important, but I’m so glad I just made myself get it done!

@Mrs. Taffy: Just do it! It’ll be great once it’s done :)

Be glad you can smile in Chigaco! In Virginia you can no longer smile in license photos, to better serve facial recognition I guess. Read about it here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/27/AR2009052703627.html
And yes, my license looks like a mug shot.

Oh my gosh, I went to the Loop express DMV and had the best experience, too! There was a line at 4 p.m. on Friday, but it went super fast. It’s my new go-to place for all things DMV. Yay!

I was at that Express DMV this week too! I was just renewing my license, and I too was SHOCKED by how quickly they got me in and out. And everyone was so nice!

What did you do with your given middle name? I want to keep mine and just add my maiden last name as another middle name. I know people who have two middle names and I am hoping it will be allowed.

Oh gosh, I hope my name change goes this smoothly! I KNOW Mr. R’s won’t because he’s a dude and there’s always issues with that… we’ll just have to wait and see! I think I’ve been practicing my new signature for about a year now, hahaha ;)

I hope mine goes this well. It’s funny that you say “surprisingly good picture” about your DMV picture. I just had to get my license renewed and my pic is HORRIBLE! But…I consoled myself by remembering that after our wedding next June, I’ll need a new license and therefore, new picture.

Oh, and um…@Miss Rainbow: I totally practice my new signature when I’m bored in meetings. :)

@Miss French Fries: & @Miss Rainbow: I was TOTALLY practicing my new signature before the wedding, and now when I legitimately have to sign it on things…I SUCK at it. And, it’s only 3 letters long. How can it be that hard, I ask you?! :)

@Carbon Girl: I dropped my middle name, but it was “Ann” and I wasn’t that attached to it. I’ve heard of people just having two middle names when they want to keep both their maiden name and middle name.

@RobinBananas: Bummer! BUT it keeps you from ending up wtih a really bad smile….now if your license looks bad, it’s totally not your fault, it’s the law!

I loved going to the loop location too, it took me a bit longer - but only a 45 minute wait and I was done at the DMV. I actually changed my DL first and then my SSC.

There is a mail in option too for you SSC. I sent in my form, marriage certificate, DL, and my old SSC - a week later I received my DL and marriage certificate back and they said I’d get my new SSC in 2 weeks - NO WAITING in line!

I don’t have a car so not having my DL for a week wasn’t difficult for me.
