About Mrs. Parfait

Dress-Maker, I Am Not

November 12th, 2009 @ 6:25 pm by Mrs. Parfait

But my mother is one heck of a designer. And since all the bridesmaid’s dresses that caught my eye were simple and sweet, I asked my mom what she thought about maybe, possibly making them! I would help, of course, but she’s seen enough of my failed projects to know that I’d be more of a bench warmer. She agreed that it would be more cost-effective for my bridesmaids and asked me to show her examples of what I like.

During our Let’s-Make-Dresses Phase, my mom considered various fabrics as I flipped through pattern books to get an idea of what’s out there.

This pattern immediately reminded me of Samantha Harris! She wore a gorgeous blue dress on Dancing with the Stars recently, and my sis-in-law thought it would make a pretty bridesmaid’s dress. I tried to imagine it in a soft, pink fabric, like Carrie Underwood’s dress:

The pattern above is sweet, but I didn’t like the overlapping fabric on the bust. We’d make the two “flaps” (can you tell I’ve never taken a fashion design class in my life?) meet in the middle and add some feminine details. I imagined something similar to these:

I liked seeing the short and long version of patterns—it was reassuring to know my girls could hack it up, and it’d still look pretty. :) The one above reminded me of Heidi Klum’s dress here:

There were a few wedding gown and accessory patterns, too! Not totally my style, but I thought I’d share in case anyone’s wondering what’s available in this department:

After all of our research, we nixed our plan to make the bridesmaid’s dresses. I wouldn’t be able to visit my mom in Florida enough to offer help and direction, and since all the girls are here in Illinois, we wouldn’t be able to do any fittings. I also started seeing through the bridal-haze and realized how much work I was actually asking my mom to do. I want her to associate happy, stress-free feelings with our wedding!

My bridesmaids don’t know that we were considering this, so nothing has changed for them. I’ll actually be shopping with them this weekend! I’ll let you know if we find anything. :)

What DIY projects have you given up in the name of simplicity?

Haha, I had asked my Dad to make my dress (he’s quite a tailor) but we gave that up for simplicity.
Same for DIYing the DJ and the videographer. Ultimately we were like you; we wanted our friends and family to just enjoy the day and not worry about anything!

I asked my mom to make my wedding dress.

*crickets chirp*

Yeah, that was met with a big fat “And when are we going to have time to do THAT?!”

My mom and sister were thinking of making my dress for me, as per my request. I was planning on the Butterick lace pattern above, minus the brooch. Then we went to try on dresses to get an “idea” of what else we could sew, and ended up buying a gown instead. :)

That was a very smart decision to not have your mom make them. I drove my poor, dear mom crazy. Not worth it.

It would’ve been really cool to have custom-made bridesmaid dresses, but it’s probably better to save your mom all that work!

Momma MB was going to make the ‘maid’s dresses, but since she’s in Texas and one bridesmaid is in Seattle and another in London, that idea got tossed. She is making the flower girl dresses though.

I actually love the idea of having the bridesmaid dresses made. It would have been nice to see your ladies’ dresses made by your mom.

Isn’t it funny how many of us had plans for custom-made dresses? Maybe it’s something about those darn price tags on the ones in stores… : )

@flamingred: Those are really cute–thanks for sharing!

If I was not a crazy DIY bride maybe I would have think of giving up the BM dress making, but I have so much fun when I sew. I know I’m crazy! :P

Those patterns are great, but I agree — that’s a lot of work for Mama Parfait! :) Hope you have a successful shopping trip this weekend!

That veil on the bottom right of the last picture is killing me! ;)

How sweet of your mom to consider doing it! But I agree that buying them will save a huge headache!

Wow, I was thinking what a rockstar your mom was for even agreeing to consider it! I think my mom would have thrown me out the window!

@Mrs. Quiche: I feel like they were trying to make it look like a little winter cape, but the fabric is all wrong!

Agreed! That hooded veil is too much! “For the bride who wants to prance through the woods on her wedding day….”

Lol, poor cape-veil-hood thing. Just can’t catch a break. : )

@Miss Poodle: Oh Poodle, I admire you all the more now that I realize how much work it is!
