About Mrs. Hamster

Photography is extremely important to Mr. Hammy and me, and we started researching different photographers soon after we got engaged. I scoured New York Magazine, WeddingWire and reviews on the Intrawebs, and asked for input from friends. After emailing and meeting with a number of photographers, we made our pick - the lovely Erica Lyn!

I first learned of Erica on this very site - she recently photographed Mrs. Gloss’ wedding! There were several things about her that caught my immediate attention - the first was her style. Having started in fashion photography, her work has an edgier feel that we really liked.

Mr. Hammy and I also really hit it off with her when we met her - I’m such an awkward turtle when it comes to pictures that I needed to make sure that I was comfortable with whomever we ended up choosing.

Here are some questions I found helpful to ask when meeting with photographers:

1. Can I see a full online album?

A lot of sites only show the “best of” shots from multiple weddings, so it’s hard to get a clear picture of what one wedding would look like. Seeing a full album really provides a good way for you to see how a photographer shoots all aspects of one wedding.

2. What is the balance between candid and posed shots? Are they open to doing more of one or the other?

This is important to make sure that their vision is aligned with yours.

3. Will we receive a copy of all negatives with a right to print?

The mans and I are planning on making our own albums at a later date and wanted to make sure we could do so.

4. What was the most challenging wedding you ever shot?

I asked this question to see what they viewed as challenges and how they worked with the situation.

5. How long after the wedding can we expect to receive our photographs?

Just so you’re on the same page regarding timing!

In my next photography post - pictures from our rescheduled engagement shoot!

What were some questions you asked during your photographer search?

Something I didn’t ask but wish I did, will I get a copy of the hi-resolution photos WITHOUT a watermark? It’s a bummer to try to make your own album when you’ve got the ugly watermark on every single picture.

I don’t like uber traditional shots but because I am crazy and just decided to get a photographer 5 months out all the good ones seem to be taken! How long out did you book your photographer?

Thanks, bees! Looking forward to sharing our engagement pics with the hive soon!

@cgruse: The photographer was one of the first vendors we booked because it was a priority for us! So it was about a year out, but I think we were on the early side.
