About Mrs. Pudding

Lovely Lady Lumps

November 12th, 2009 @ 2:23 pm by Mrs. Pudding

Have you ever done one of those quizzes in teen girl mags that claim to educate you on how to “Dress for your Shape”? Usually, your answers result in one of these four possibilities:

Once you know your “basic shape”, the magazine goes on to educate you on the perfect date outfit for your body type, or a prom dress that will highlight your “positive attributes”. Equipped with this knowledge, you can go on to be your most fabulous self!

But what about those of us who don’t quite fit into these four standard types? Are we doomed to never find out which outfit will look best on us?

Out of these basic shapes, my results often tell me that I am an hourglass. I have a lot of the features of the hourglass: I have a very defined waistline, and the measurements of my ribcage are identical to those of my hips. There is one thing that differentiates me from the hourglass, however. The part of my body that I am most sensitive about: My shoulders.

I have very broad shoulders. Perhaps not football player broad, but I have often been mistaken for a competitive swimmer. Buying jackets is the bane of my existence, as I often have to buy jackets 4-6 sizes bigger than I normally wear because they either don’t fit in the shoulders, or the sleeves are too short (I also have monkey-long arms). Thus, the tips that are often given to the hour glass, don’t always apply to me.

In reality, there are 6 standard female body shapes:

Unfortunately, those tests in Cosmo often disregard my inverted triangle body shape, and those ladies with the diamond shape are also often ignored. Thank goodness for the Internet! After doing some research, I found some tips for other upside-down triangle ladies out there.

If, like me, you are an inverted triangle:

Your main style aims are to create the illusion of the perfect hourglass body shape by balancing your lower body to your upper body and to draw attention away from your upper body.

Do wear…

  • Flowing fabrics
  • Low to medium-low necklines
  • Set-in sleeves
  • Three-quarter length sleeves
  • A good fitting, well adjusted bra
  • Tops and dresses that flow through the waist
  • A-line skirts
  • Flared pants

Don’t wear…

  • Stiff, bulky, fabrics
  • Styles that emphasize your shoulders
  • High necklines
  • Big collars
  • Tapered skirts and pants

Do you have an unconventional body shape? Where do you go to figure out how to dress for your body type?

The British What Not To Wear ladies (susannah and…?) have a great body categorization method–they don’t just have hourglass they have skittles and bowling pins and lollipops and all sorts of shapes. I really like their method (especially since I’m a cross between your typical hourglass and pear, making me more or a skittle or bowling pin ^_^).

Ooh I never fit into those standard body shapes. Maybe because I’m so wee, or b/c my boobs (were) so much larger than the rest of me.

like SpinningJenny I’m somewhere in between the Pear and the Hourglass and I always hate their suggestions. Just because I’m a pear doesn’t mean I want to hide my bottom half under A-Line dresses. I happen to like my pear shape thankyouverymuch!

I’m probably closest to the ruler (that’s what I always go by in the magazines), but I’ve always considered my body shape to be most like that of a 12-year-old boy.

I wonder what the proportions are for each one! I’ve never known what kind of body shape I have. I think it always depends on how much I ate the night before. : P

“Round” is a shape, right? I’m round. All over. HA! That chart is amazing, though.

I too fall in between the pear and hourglass. I actually have a D-cup bra size which would make one think I was an hour glass shape but in measurments I’m a 36, 28, 42. Yes 42! I have to wear jeans at least 2 sizes bigger than my tops and dresses are an agony to find. My best dresses have always been made by my mom so that they would actually fit me right :-/

Oh, I never fit in any of those either. I flip through the pages of magazines wondering what they’ll say I should wear. Well, yeah, I’m a cross between a petite, hourglass and busty. What the hell do I wear??

I don’t think I fit any of the standard shapes either, not even the 6 you just showed us. Or maybe I’m a “mini” hourglass? I have no idea! At any rate, those things don’t ever seem to help me. My problem is that my chest never fills anything out!!

I’m a triangle shape too. I’ve got a big poofy skirt to balance out the giant shoulders, but it’s still pretty bad. :P

Stacy and Clinton’s “Dress Your Best” book has pretty good breakdowns of different body types and how to accentuate. I can’t remember them off the top of my head but they give the height/weight/proportions of the actual model so you can compare.

That said, I can never figure out what freakin’ shape I am in those magazines. I’m tall (5′8″), with super long legs, big busted (34DD) but with a flat butt. I’m an hourglass with most of the sand in the top, I guess ;o)

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: I am exactly like you! I’m petite because I am 5 foot/100 lbs but I have a 34C bust but I also have a very defined waist that makes me have a more hourglass shage. Where does that put me???

@hotchildinthecity: Your body type sounds very similar to mine. When I gain weight, my butt and thighs stay pretty much the same, and it all goes to my boobs, stomach, and arms (also, i gain weight in my face pretty quickly). Does that happen to you?

1) I love the title of this post.

2) I also have no idea what body type I am. I think maybe ruler with a bit of hourglass? Does that even make sense? I feel like because I’m tall, my proportions are thrown off. Long legs, long torso, long arms, endowed in front, but not in back. :sigh: Who knows!

@MissPudding: Yep. In fact I have pretty narrow hips but all my weight is right in my belly. I also have big thighs from running. I am a mutant haha.

I’m a size 6-8 but I have the hardest time finding jeans and such because they have to be long/tall length, which cuts out about 90% of jeans, and then my butt/hip/waist/thigh proportions are just insane.

I am an hourglass, it annoys me how much my waist comes in, i think it makes my hips & upper body look even bigger, but hey its me!

@AnnieAAA: Most girls would give anything for a smaller waist! You’re very lucky!

One of the plus size websites I’ve shopped at labels me a figure eight–like an hour glass, but rounded on top and bottom, with heavier upper arms. http://www.igigi.com/cms/shapestylist/figure-eight/

I also found an article online about the British What Not to Wear body types. Maybe I’d be a cello…
