I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.

Love: Wedding Dress Trends

November 13th, 2009 @ 9:28 am by Mrs. Pudding

Those who know me realize how important the dress is to me. I LOVE dresses, and I wear them a lot. I have had the opportunity to wear many a fancy dress, and I feel the most beautiful when I am wearing one. Suffice it to say, I was very intent on finding the perfect dress for our wedding. Having a two year engagement ensured that I had a lot of time to do my research, and I was very diligent about it. Here are some dress trends that I LOVE:

1. Mermaid Silhouettes

This one isn’t exactly a shocker, but I love the mermaid/trumpet style gown. Not only is this style sexy and classic all at the same time, but I think that it will accentuate my very particular set of curves.

2. Lace Dresses That Seem as Light as Air

Lace is not new to the bridal world, but I’m not talking about traditional bridal lace, which is very stiff, and can be quite heavy. I’m talking about dresses that are composed of lace so soft that they seem “frothy”.

3. Tulle!

I love, love, love this trend! Although tulle and the mermaid don’t often mix, I love how soft and romantic this material is. I think that it is a modern alternative for the romantic gal that wants to look like a princess on her wedding day.

4. Interesting Necklines (Alternate title: Anything But Strapless!)

I am not a fan of strapless dresses for several reasons. First of all, I hate having to pull up my dress because I am worried about the girls falling out. Also, I have football player shoulders and find that strapless dresses highlight that. :P

Here are some examples of designers who are going against the strapless dress trend:

Love: Wedding Dress Trends : wedding wedding dress Jenny L Jenny Lee

Love: Wedding Dress Trends : wedding wedding dress Jim Hje Jim Hjelm

Love: Wedding Dress Trends : wedding wedding dress Pnina T01 Pnina Tornai

Love: Wedding Dress Trends : wedding wedding dress Justin 01 and Justin Alexander

(if I were having a winter wedding, I would totally rock this dress!)

Now, I realize that I cannot afford any of these dresses. This is completely a fantasy post. However, these dresses served as inspiration in my search for the perfect dress.

Which current dress trends do you adore?

Yay! for non-strapless dresses! I am so bored from seeing them on everyone.
I do love the mermaid trend…very sexy!

Those are all SO gorgeous!!!

I don’t necessarily know if mine is a trend, but it’s a sort of off the wall dress but still classic. The off the wall part is that it’s covered with polka dots!

I LOVE non-strapless dresses. But I found in my neck of the woods that with a low budget it was hard to find a dress with straps that I liked. :( I’m jealous of those who find awesome, strap-full dresses in their budget. ^_^

@SpinningJenny: I agree with you. When I went into most shops and said I wanted straps, the sales person was able to find only two or three dresses. I did end up with straps though, so I am very happy!

All beautiful dresses! I love that non-strapless dresses are making a comeback. My dress has straps and I love it - plus I can wear a regular bra with it.

Great post! Regarding trends, I love ruching (so flattering) and mermaid/trumpet silhouettes. Can’t wait to see what you end up getting!

Anything but strapless! I wore David’s Bridal CD278 - twisted straps and all :) I loved that i didn’t have to fidget with pulling up my dress all night. I heard from two other brides that this dress doesn’t work so well if you have a larger chest, but I didn’t have that concnern..

Ah, the Anne Barge trumpet. I have been drooling over that dress for months (read: since before we were engaged). And I’ll echo the non-strapless sentiments flying around this post . . . the first bridal salon we went to (granted it was a small one) only carried a handful of gowns that weren’t strapless. So lame. I also really like a lot of the one-shoulder gowns (and while we’re fantasizing without any thoughts of budget - particularly those by Romona Keveza)!

@froggy518: I love the one shoulder gowns too, but only in theory. I have several one shoulder cocktail dresses, and I love them. However, for a wedding dress, I wanted something a bit more classic.

I am with you on the strapless front! My girls are way too big to rock a strapless, if I did there would definitely be an emergency of sorts at some point!!

I really love off the shoulder dresses with a nice sweetheart dip. I think they’re so classic and beautiful. I daydream of having the ability to spend 10k on a dress….but it’s not happening anytime soon. *le sigh*

So many lovely dresses. Mine is actually a rare case of mermaid and tulle mixing (plus lace!) - http://www.bridalwave.tv/2008/09/maggie_sottero_4.html

I definitely have the inverted triangle body as well. I will be wearing Casablanca 1860 on my wedding day. It is so gorgeous and flattering with an A-line skirt and drop waist. Plus…it has straps! Yea!

Love, love, love the Pnina Tornai! Strapless did seem to be the only option when I went dress shopping.
