If I’m remembering correctly, we decided on the colors of our wedding first. Why? I’m not sure. Maybe it was because it seemed like an easy thing to cross off the to-do list. It started with a simple concept: his favorite color is green and my favorite color is purple (basically, just like Miss Poodle!). Easy enough, right? Ha. I soon found out that there are about 50 million different shades of purple and green, and I got really caught up in the nitty gritty of the exact shades to fit the vision of our day.
Doing some research (the knot, an unending supply of wedding magazines), I realized that purple was quickly becoming the shade for weddings (as evidenced by the many, many purple bees in the hive!). I felt a little bit unoriginal at first, but then I realized that I had pictured a purple wedding since I was a child (my favorite flowers are lilacs), and I felt better.
A lot of what I was seeing at first was eggplant and apple green, and I thought - this is it! Modern, elegant, not too girly… perfect.

While this combo makes for some gorgeous pictures and a color combination that really pops, I started yearning for good that old fashioned romantic, vintage-y feel that, in my opinion, can only be achieved with (gasp!) pastels. I immediately started researching inspiration in lilacs and sages. I came up with some great pictures to guide me.

Then I started to doubt that decision as well. I thought that the decor might look too much like Easter eggs, that it might be too traditional, that it was way too feminine, and worst of all, that I might look back at the pictures in 20 years and hate it.
I started ordering paper and fabric swatches from various companies, and I used them to look at different combinations of purples and greens. I was set on soft sages and pale greens over apple green for sure, but I was struggling with the purples. I couldn’t quite decide on light or dark shades.
Believe it or not, this decision was really difficult and it really bothered me that I couldn’t just decide! I wanted to get going with planning the paper products and other DIY stuff, and I couldn’t do it without a clear vision of color.
Then, it happened. I saw this spread in Martha Stewart Weddings:

Nope, we didn’t decide to add red. But when I saw the light AND dark purples together, it just clicked. I love, love, LOVE the look of the two shades together, and they look amazing with sages and pale greens. I settled on shades of paper and fabric that matched, and it felt oh so good. And so, our color palette (created at colorcombos.com):

Who knew that choosing wedding colors could be so difficult!?
