Mrs. Pudding's Picture
Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/Vermont Age and Occupation: 26, High School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: August 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall Reception About Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.
About Mrs. Pudding

This summer, Mr. Pudding and I went to Poland to attend two weddings. About a week before we left, I telephoned our decorator because I wanted to pick out the linens before the vacation. Despite the very short notice, she was wonderful and agreed to meet with Mama Pudding and me. I thought that this would be a breeze; I knew exactly what I wanted, so we would be in and out in a matter of minutes. Boy, was I wrong!

When I got to her studio and sat down, I realized that I actually had no idea what our event is supposed to look like. I explained to her that the main colour was going to be navy, at which point she made a bit of a face and explained that navy is “a very difficult colour to work with”. I told her that I wanted the decor to be mostly navy and white, with yellow accents. She asked me if I had any pictures. Of course, since navy seems to be such a popular accent colour on the internet, I thought that the decorator would for sure know what I was talking about. I mean, she has definitely seen all of those beautiful navy and yellow inspiration boards on Snippet and Ink or checked out the several Weddingbee weddings that were heavy on the navy blue, right? Man, am I a bonehead! It turns out that what works in the virtual wedding world and what works in the real world are two totally different things.

Take, for example, this beautiful inspiration board from Snippet and Ink:

Planning a Wedding is Harder than it Looks on the Internet : wedding color schemes Snippet (source)

Beautiful, right? This board was very inspirational to me when I first started leaning towards this colour combination. But, wait a second, do you see what is wrong with this picture? The board has very little to do with an actual wedding! Hmmm… let’s see… fancy china in the colour scheme that is not available for rent in quantities of 200+… a lovely yellow chair with dogs on it (I do not possess neither the furniture nor the canines)… a girl wearing thick, navy stockings to our July wedding… a bottle of navy blue nail polish that I would never put on my fingers for our wedding day, but I suppose I could incorporate it into the centerpieces? All in all, the only actual idea that I got from this board is that I should have yellow in the invitations (duh) and that lemons could work as a major decorating element. OK… but what about the tablecloths? What colour should the chair covers and napkins be? Alas, these questions are not often answered on blogs that feature really beautiful, unique weddings that do not take place in giant, empty reception halls.

So, I went online looking for inspiration. You know what? My decorator was right. Navy is difficult to work with. This statement must be true since it is close to impossible to actually find pictures of real life reception halls decorated within this colour scheme. Here are the only images that I have hoarded so far:

Planning a Wedding is Harder than it Looks on the Internet : wedding color schemes Instyle InStyle weddings managed to be somewhat helpful with this image of a navy and yellow place setting…

Planning a Wedding is Harder than it Looks on the Internet : wedding color schemes Project …and Project Wedding provided me with the only picture of a navy and yellow reception table I could find using my (very modest) Google skills.

So, back to the story. I told the decorator that I was thinking about navy table cloths and ivory chair covers. She said that she wasn’t a fan of the great contrast that those colours created, and that it might not look great in a reception hall of our size. She suggested silver chair covers, and Mama Pudding agreed. Internally, I was thinking “Nooo… silver chair covers are totally against the initial vision of my (ahem….our) wedding,” but when I got home and found the picture above, I started to wonder if maybe silver was the way to go.

Ashley emailed me images of the navy tablecloths next to the silver and ivory chair covers:

In the pictures, they actually don’t look that different. Which would you choose? Have you seen any weddings with the navy and yellow colour scheme put to real use?

I am kind of anti-chair cover, myself. What do the venue chairs look like? Are they hideous?

I think that silver blends better.

Definitely the silver! It’s neutral without watering down the pretty blue.

Thanks for the picture of the navy table clothes and the white square plates! That’s exactly what we want to do for our wedding! Yay!

I like how stark the white is against the navy. Reminds me of starched boating outfits. However, a whole giant room of it maaay be too much. The silver looks classy and blends well without being all in your face about it. I’d say- if you want things to blend and not stand out too much, go silver. If, however, you want the chairs to stand out against all the blue (and possible match the plate colors?)- go white.

Our wedding colors are navy, ivory, yellow with pops of gold and yellow. The BM’s are wearing navy dresses, carrying yellow, ivory and green flowers with gold sandals. Tables are going to be ivory, with gold chargers and gold chivari chairs. Centerpieces are floating candles with yellow submerged flowers.

Have you thought about having white or ivory linens and incorporating navy elsewhere in your color scheme? Is your room dark, light? If it’s dark then dark linens might be overpowering. What do the chairs look like without covers?

Otherwise, I like the silver :)

Interested to see what options are out there, as I am also doing navy as the base color for my wedding. I was thinking navy tableclothes might be a bit much though. Maybe white or ivory tableclothes with navy napkins?

Miss Pudding, I had a navy and yellow wedding and went off that SNippet & Ink Inspiration board as well. If you want to PM me, I can send you some images to see. Id go with the white - the silver looks great but I dunno about with yellow accents. We had natural wood chairs, but Navy Imperial Stripe tablecloths with white napkins and yellow accents. I fell like if Id thrown silver into that mix it would have been WAY too visually assaulting at our place

@Miss Root: Unfortunately, the chairs at our venue are burgundy. Yuck. We also don’t have the funds to be able to rent chivari chairs. So chair covers it is!

@elaineathon: Hmm…I’ve thought about doing white table cloths, but I kind of like the drama that the navy provides, you know? I think that I will need to look at more inspiration pictures before I make my decision.

I was anti chair cover, but the chairs at our venue were really beat up- lots of them actually had holes in the fabric!!! Renting chairs was way out of the budget, so we did covers. Ours were the same fabric as the linens. I think the silver looks better than the white in the pictures here. Good luck!

Oh, I didn’t think about the yellow and silver together. eep! You can always get the drama by the contrast of navy on top of white or ivory…

Sounds like you have a not so fun vendor on your hands. You might go to another vendor with your ideas and see what they can help you create.

That said, I like the ivory personally. It plays on the yellow much better than the silver does.

All that said, you can do sashes on your chairs in navy or in yellow and you really won’t notice the rest of the cover so much.

Also, you don’t have to rent chiavaris. You can rent what they call “garden chairs” that come in all colors (white, black, dark wood light wood, silver, etc). Those look beautiful and are usually a fraction of the cost of chiavaris.

I’m doing a wedding this week with navy linens and accents of lime green and pink. It is hard to find but navy linens look AWESOME. Just get a swatch so all the navy is the same color.

Finally, If you invest in good production lighting, you won’t notice the color of the chairs or walls or carpet or anything!! Lighting is a big player in transforming a room!

@canegirl08: If you don’t mind me asking, what colour are the chairs at the wedding you are doing?

Yay for navy, white and yellow! :)
We opted to do everything white (chairs/linens/plates) and used navy runners and napkins for a punch of color. PM me if you want a sneak peak picture :)

I think that if you are trying to keep is a realtively light, but beautiful summer wedding I think white would be an awesome choice. If you are going more formal I would go with silver.
