Finish What You Start.

November 17th, 2009 @ 12:27 pm by Mrs. French Fries

Like so many others before me, I’ve decided to take on a few wedding DIY details. And by a few, I mean the following: a slew of tulle pomanders, 120 linen napkins, our entire invitation suite from scratch, and all wedding-related paper (including but not limited to): programs, escort cards, candy jar signage, photo booth signage, glassine envelopes for guest favors, and possibly other things as well. You know… just a couple of things. Easy peasy.

I decided to make the tulle pomanders first, inspired by Mrs. Beagle’s tutorial (and also because tulle was on sale and it was something I figured I could do well in advance). Armed with copious amounts of tulle and more Styrofoam balls than I ever care to see again, I started making my pomanders (pictures and a few “helpful hints” in a post to come!).

Um, did I mention that I’m making 16 pomanders? Sixteen. 1-6. That’s a lot of tulle, letmetellyou. Why 16? Well, one Sunday in church, I stealthily counted the number of pews down the center aisle of our church. I counted 15 pews on each side, and determined that I could do a tulle pomander on every other pew on each side of the aisle. This means 8 per side, and 16 total.

So, over the past months, I’ve been steadily plugging away on making my pomanders. And by “plugging”, I do mean… plugging. It’s slow going. I have 10 of them done, so I’m over halfway finished, but here’s the problem. I’ve vowed to myself that I would finish one DIY project (in this instance, the poms) before starting another. Why am I waiting? Well, as Socrates said, “know thyself.”

I know myself – and I know that if I start another DIY project (perhaps something more exciting and appealing to me at that moment in time) I won’t want to go back and finish the poms. Don’t get me wrong – I love how they’ve turned out and can’t wait to see them in action – but I also know that for me, picking something back up that is ½ finished is harder than the effort it takes to just finish it to the end. I’m itching to get to work on other projects, so I guess this is my motivation to get the poms done! If you need me, I’ll be at my kitchen table, cutting/folding/fluffing tulle. At least for a few more weeks.

Do you have a plan of attack for your DIY? Once started, do you sometimes have trouble finishing projects?

That’s a good idea.. one at a time. :) I had to do this as well because otherwise I’d end up starting more than I could *store* if I finished them!

I should learn from your wisdom… but I sometimes feel like cranking out an easy and quick DIY is satisfying and re-charges me to finish the one that is dragging on.

Good plan! My problem was the opposite of yours–i was usually too intimidated with a project to start. Starting was half the battle for me. Good luck!

Great plan of attack!!! I did the “two many going at one time” for a bit and then realized it wasn’t working and all it did was overwhelm me.

Just a thought, something that helped me was to put a $ amount saved on each DIY project. This was even more of an incentive to get things done.

Oh man, I start, get frustrated, find a martha article outlining some new DIY project that I want to tackle. Disregard first project and start on new one, only to get frustrated by my lackluster abilities and quit 2nd DIY project too. Start searching etsy and find someone that really knows how to accomplish these projects. Ugh.

I’m with pretzel. I have a few started that just won’t get done. You’ve inspired me to get a move on those!! Good luck with everything :)

I think that’s an excellent plan, but I think that’s because I function the same way! If I were to move on to a more fun and exciting DIY project, it would make it a million times harder to go back to the boring, repetitive one! Good luck!

I’m dreading my DIY invitations because I’m pretty sure I’ll get frustrated and end up buying them!

I am a one at a time kinda DIY-er. It’s fun to skip around, but it’s hard to get going again! Keep at it! You can do it!!! (Can’t wait to see how the poms turn out!)

Agh, my pew decorations are the thing I’ve been putting off. I now have like 1 not completely full day left. Get them done as soon as you can.
