Mrs. Cloud's Picture
Mrs. Cloud, Richmond Age and Occupation: 25, Sales Rep Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Customer Service Manager/DJ Engagement Date: February 14, 2008 Wedding Date: November 2009 Venue: Cathedral of the Sacred Heart & The Jefferson Hotel About Me: Mr. Cloud and I are Yankees planning a Southern wedding to show our families from Boston and New York our fabulous city. We are complete opposites, resulting in a wedding to include bridesmaids in pearls and groomsmen in Adidas shell toes. I’m a sorority girl at heart with strong addictions to my blackberry, cherry Chapstick, Coach purses, the Boston Red Sox and our fur baby, Bella. I can’t wait to the throw the party of our lives and of course, marry my best friend!
About Mrs. Cloud

When this whole wedding planning shenanigans started, Mama Cloud and I decided that we were going to go it alone—just me and her on a big fat planning adventure. I like to think I’m pretty resourceful and persuasive when I want to be, and Mama Cloud is the most downright organized person I’ve ever encountered. I figured between the two of us we would have this wedding locked down and ready to go in no time. Trouble is, like mother like daughter; we are also both very emotional and very excited ladies. Emotional as in the tears come quick when we get upset, and excited like we have so many ideas and want to start making things happen quickly before thinking it all through (OK, I’m way worse than she is at both of these, but that is not the point…). It wasn’t far into our twenty one month journey (I’m sorry but I still cannot believe it was TWENTY ONE months, it seems like an eternity!) it was obvious that we were going to need some help, if not only just on the big day.

Enter Windy Jennings of Weddings By Windy (aka lifesaver and wedding goddess extraordinaire!). I really cannot say enough about this woman. If I were to write a review on her with a rating system it would be an A with so many plus signs afterward you would think she was paying me to say it (which of course she’s not, I just love her that much). She not only made me love her but also made me realize the value and importance of having a planner or coordinator for your wedding. We used Windy for her “partial coordination” package even though we set out looking for just day of services. I didn’t even know there was a middle level between DOCs and the whole shebang, but it turns out a lot of coordinators offer personalized packages to handle whatever small or large tasks you need help with.

For an overly emotional gal like myself this came in very handy when the tea room where I had signed a contract with to have my bridesmaid’s luncheon decided to go out of business without telling me. I got a very calm email from Windy letting me know she had seen the notice on their site and was already contacting them. Oh, and to make it that much better she had a few places already thought out that might work instead. Emotional bride over here would have been bawling her eyes out and screaming her head off if I had found the notice myself. Never mind the HUGE crisis that was averted at the wedding when I forgot to wear my garter and decided to just forget the whole toss completely. Little did I know that Mr. Cloud had big plans for the garter toss, and if someone did not go to my room and get it I would be ruining months of his planning. Windy, cool as a cucumber, responded that I should really have someone go get it because I wouldn’t want to regret missing the tradition and never once hinted what a frenzy I was sending everyone into. (I know, I am being very vague about the huge surprise, but I have to save something for recaps, people!)

My point is, be it big or small, a planner just might save your day (and sanity) in similar ways and I highly encourage every bride-to-be to find a planner to become your BFF, at least for the day, much like Windy had to become mine for a few weeks (whether she liked it or not :)). Mama Cloud and I still agree that working a planner into the budget, even when we still didn’t want to admit we really needed one, is the best decision we ever made. Because really, the church lady just might not bother to fluff your veil right before you walk down the aisle. And more than any other day you need someone on your side fighting for your vision, or at least giving you a little fluff.

OMG. I totally agree. I was going to take on everything myself, but decided not to so I could remain stress-free on the big day (and the days leading up to it). Little did I know how above-and-beyond our DOC went for us. I’m 100% pro-DOC. I’m waiting for a picture before I can do my post on her because it speaks volumes about how awesome DOCs can be!

I really really need to hire a DOC, I just can’t find one I like! After reading this, I think I might also do well to have a little-bit-extra-than-DOC.

Oh, I just hired my DOC and already I’ve started referring to her as wedding sanity. I really don’t think brides know how helpful a trained wedding professional can be until they hear wonderful stories like yours. I’m a total A type personality and I know without someone else taking the reins that I will be focused on my guests and all of the details working out just right instead of enjoying the first moments of wedded bliss. Great post!

i want to hire a doc for the big day so i can just let things go and not worry about anything. and i’d rather not drop that huge responsibility on my friends either. at least not with me as a client!

I was going to go DOC-less until I met with my coordinator, Danielle, who SAVED MY LIFE. I would have been a mess without her.

I wish I could have hired a DOC. But my wedding day still went fine without one! And afterwards I was kind of glad we saved the money!

We didn’t hire one, but our venue came with one “in-house.” Not exactly the same thing, but he did an amazing job on the day of, so I don’t regret not hiring an outside coordinator.

i want a DOC… saldy, I don’t think I can afford one.

i am having a close close friend be in charge of everything on the big day (no pressure friend) so I hope this decreases my stress a bit?

I think a wedding coordinator is ridiculous. I live in the DC area and was told that for day of planning they are only $1500. I’m sorry but that is my paycheck gone in one day (and I have a graduate degree). I’ve done more coordination in one day as a medical intern than they have ever done. This is why the wedding industry is out of control and the cost of everything is not reflective of reality or even quality. Yipee a polyester dress for a thousand!

@Theresa: I paid $750 for a DOC in the Philadelphia area and the peace of mind she provided (and the few little problems she dealt with so I didn’t have to worry) were more than worth it. I think in many wedding day situations, it is invaluable to have that person watching your back! But yes, some do grossly overcharge for their services.

We had an in-house one at our venue, and she was AMAZING! I was so glad to have her! But, it also made me wish that I had hire a real coordinator for other things along the way…

Thanks for this post, Cloud! Our reception venue has an in-house coordinator, just like others have commented. I wonder if it would be worth it to hire someone else for the rest of the day…

it seems like such a smart idea. someone to be in charge for you (when you’re busy looking beautiful) and to save you from melt-downs and freak-outs. i must find a fabulous coordinator. i hope i’m as lucky as you.

@Theresa — I totally agree (I too live in DC). I’ve been pricing some in the Buffalo, NY area and they are around $900-$1500.
