About Mrs. Pudding

The Traditional Wife

November 19th, 2009 @ 5:10 pm by Mrs. Pudding

For the last couple of weeks, I have been working very hard to organize Mr. Pudding’s closet. It started out with me sorting and throwing out his old, outgrown clothes, and advanced to folding and neatly stacking all of his garments (the man has over 90 t-shirts!). For the last couple of days, I have found myself endlessly ironing all of his dress shirts and pants, and meticulously placing them on hangers so that they are ready for future wear.

When FFIL Pudding saw me ironing again last week, he said: “You know, ironing was one of the first things that my wife taught me when we got married, so that I could iron my own shirts!”

This got me thinking about why I was so concerned about ironing Mr. P’s clothes. Am I trying much too hard to fit into the stereotype of what a “wife” is supposed to do for her husband? Am I forming habits in our relationship that will forever box me into being Mr. P’s glorified housekeeper?

Upon further thought, I came to the conclusion that when I iron Mr. Pudding’s shirts, I really do it for me.

You see, Mr. P doesn’t care whether or not his shirts are ironed. He could go to work wrinkly every single day and not let that affect his productivity or self esteem. I, on the other hand, love to see him in a crisp, ironed  dress shirt. I think that he looks so handsome and clean, not to mention, grown up! I must admit however, that there is an old school Polish part of me that believes that the way he looks reflects on me as his wife. I realize that this is an irrational way of thinking that has been forced on me by my traditional upbringing. Alas, being from an old school Polish family has rubbed off on me, and not always in positive ways.

Do you iron your partner’s shirt?

Umm, no- I don’t iron unless one of us has a job interview. I encourage buying wrinkle free clothes and take things out of the dryer as soon as it stops so I don’t have to get that bad boy out.

That is an interesting point that his appearance reflects you as a wife, but I just can’t imagine adding one more thing to my plate to go the extra mile!

Is it sad that I don’t really know how to iron? Yeah, I just never learned and now if something needs ironing I throw it into the dryer or take it to the dry cleaner. Wow, that makes me sound lame when it’s all typed out, but it’s the truth.

I can totally relate to your post!! My Mr. is the same way– he could care less if his shirts aren’t perfectly crisp, yet I care. I iron his shirts one day a week & it takes all day. He has about 40 dress shirts. Seriously…

I do it because I love him & want him to look nice at work :) I also do it because of the big thank you hug he gives me when he see’s all his shirts ironed! I enjoy playing wifey!!

yes, I do… and when I was little I ironed my daddy’s shirts too…

Something that comes along with the deal! I am not going to be working, I will be finishing up school, so he will be working and providing for us, and I will be taking care of him; you know doing laundry and ironing and making food. I think that it is going to be a good partnership.

Sounds like you are a very organized person that likes to be prepared…. good job!

I iron my husbands shirts every Sunday night - and to be honest i find it to be really relaxing - sometimes i just need that sort of mindless work! I set up my ironing board in front of the TV and get all of his shirts and pants ready for the week.

opposite for us. i could care less and prefer wrinkle free/throw in the dryer clothes. hubby is great at ironing and usually does my shirt and pants for me nearly every day. i wash the clothes though so i feel like im pulling my weight.

I don’t iron, but I fold the laundry. (And wash it if he hasn’t already). I find it calming.

I iron FI’s shirts for the same reason you do: he has and does go to work in wrinkled shirts and alas, it doesn’t hinder him at all. But we’re here to take care of each other - so he kills spiders (and ants!) for me and I will on occasion iron his shirts. It’s a fair trade off as far as I’m concerned. :)

All his shirts go to the dry cleaners for a wash and press. I hate ironing. For 99cents a shirt is a bargain in sanity.

Oh, I do do all of our wash though. And I fold and put that away…or he would live out of a clothes basket…

i barely iron my own shirts! i just leave them by the ironing board and they get magically ironed by my mom. lol. however, the boy only wears button down shirts so he’s really good about ironing his own shirts. i’ve ironed his pants once but that was it.

i did have a “good wife” moment this past weekend. we went out for sushi and there i was arranging his little bowl with soy sauce and making sure he always had enough. i do tend to serve his meals on occasion too.

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: i had a friend who never ironed too. we took a picture of her first attempt during our grad trip in high school. we are nothing but supportive. lol

@amyrose: I do exactly the same thing. I ironed today while watching a “Gilmore Girls” rerun.

I NEVER iron. I attempted to iron one of his dress shirts once and he claims I burned it. So, I was never asked to iron again. I certainly wouldn’t mind doing it once in a while, but he refuses to let me.
I don’t have clothes that require ironing, I guess. If a t-shirt is wrinkled, I throw it in the dryer with a wet washcloth.
My dad has just started ironing his own clothes (after 32 years of marriage). I think the only reason he does it himself now is that he’s retired and my mom still works, so he maybe feels a little guilty if she has to iron too.

He would wear wrinkled up dress shirts for the rest of his life if it weren’t for me. I think it reflects poorly on his professionalism at work if he’s not crisp and clean, so I just do it. Doesn’t hurt that he looks adorable in a nicely ironed shirt, either ;)

I’d do it if he asked me to, but I really doubt if he would ever even think that a shirt of his needed to be ironed, haha.
I definitely don’t buy into gender roles when it comes to housework. Which means, honestly, that a lot of stuff just doesn’t get done! But really, I don’t care if the house is sparkling clean so long as everything is neatly put away. That’s my obsession. I think if we both continue to have 8-5 office type jobs we will have to hire a cleaner to come in every 2 weeks to keep our house from being completely disgusting! I know some people can pull it off, but frankly we just don’t care enough to do it ourselves, haha.

@tea: Isn’t there something so magical about a mom-ironed shirt?

i used to iron his clothes all the time. but now he irons them himself. on occasion, i’ll iron a shirt or two, but not very often.

I’m a total feminist, and domestically disabled, so I’m not inclined to iron his shirts, and certainly never because I thought it would reflect on my abilities as a wife. Ugh! Just me thinking that has Simone de Beauvoir rolling in her grave!
