Michaels and My D’Oh! Moment

November 20th, 2009 @ 5:16 pm by Miss Cola

I’m hoping I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew. I mean, I’m crafty, right? I always used to ace school projects—just give me poster board, some markers and some glue, and I could whip out a project like nothing. But that was in elementary school…

And I’ve been sewing since about 6th grade, when my mom got me a pattern to make a snappy vest (and who knew vests would be back in style now!). Over the years I’ve made skirts, Halloween costumes, and more recently, a slipcover for my couch.

But that’s about it. I haven’t really been crafty for years. And I’m wondering, is it like riding a bike, or did I lose some of my skills over the years?

I started wondering this when I went to Michaels this past weekend.

‘Hi! I’m a bride and I’m ready to DIY anything I can get my hands on!’ I thought to myself as I walked in the door.

I had a long list of items to get, supplies for our STDs, card box, a glue gun for my napkin rings, etc. But then, I walked in the door, and it hit me. So. Much. Stuff… So. Many. Options.

Yikes!

So I grabbed a cart, shopping list in hand, and started going up and down each and every aisle, trying to get a lay of the land, figure out where stuff was, and TRY to not get distracted by every little… embellishment… glitter paint… things I did not need and had no business looking at. About two hours in, I had found most of the items on my list, and was only feeling slightly overwhelmed by the fact that I may very well be out of my element, trying to DIY things when I haven’t done so in years. But then it came time to find a corner rounder.

That damn, elusive corner rounder! I had big plans for it for our STD cards, and I must find it today. On about my 10th trip around the store, I went down the aisle with all the punches again, and I swear, I looked at every one there! Corner punches with flowers, punches with paisleys, corner punches with every imaginable shape, but not a simple rounder. So I moved on, up and down the aisles and aisles of scrapbooking supplies, and around the whole store again. Finally I came back to the punches aisle, determined to see if there was an empty hook, with promise of a restocking soon.

And then I found it. I literally slapped myself on the forehead and said a big Homer Simpson “D’oh!” out loud (luckily I was in the aisle by myself). Ladies, for any of you who haven’t used one before, or have been out of your “crafty element” for years, this is what a plain and simple corner rounder looks like:

OMG, I felt so dumb. But hey, I’d never seen or used one before. And after the hours of shopping in just one store, I could have been going a little cross-eyed.

So I left, $278.16 poorer, and feeling a little depressed. If I couldn’t even find a stupid corner rounder in a craft store for hours, how was I going to be able to pull off all of these crafts I was planning? Well, I’ve got the supplies, and now it’s time to find out!

Did you feel overwhelmed after your first visit to the craft store for wedding DIY supplies?

Dude, I cannot tell you how many times I have searched and searched and searched for stuff in Michael’s, thinking I was going crazy! I’m sure you’ll rediscover your crafty gene in no time.

okay! so if you are going to get a corner rounder, i would NOT buy the punch down ones- the metal too easily gets bent and it rarely works for more than 20-30 punches. i recommend this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-FCSP-7329-4-Inch-Corner-Squeeze/dp/B0018BYEWK

its by fiskars and its almost SURE to last the duration of your project. we use it at the paper store i work for (paper source) and i love it :) okay thats all bye!

I do this in Michael’s all the time. I think it’s partially because I get distracted by all the fun shiny craft stuff and I kind of forget what I was looking for in the first place….:-)

I know what you’re feeling!! We went to Michaels to look for see through envelopes for our lotto tickets and the lady said they didnt have any. So we finally found the card making aisle where there were some envelopes…and guess what we found…translucent envelopes! I hope you have better luck next time and I cant wait to see all your projects.

Isn’t it frightening how fast it adds up? I can blow through $80 of craft supplies in 20 minutes. SCARY.

I can’t walk in that place or JoFab’s without spending hours wandering the aisles. I found no wedding inspiration on my last trip so I ended up deciding to get supplies make chocolate covered pretzel rods instead. Michael’s has some good stuff though!

I’m terrible at purchasing like 1 of everything they sell. I’m at the point now where I have to set a dollar amount limit before I even enter the store! It’s sort of fun now, post wedding, to go in and buy stuff to make a regular old Christmas wreath and red ribbon - nothing that matches our wedding colors, involves initials, etc!

If it wasn’t for my super crafty bridesmaid I wouldn’t even know a corner rounder existed! Thankfully she has about 3 so she saved me a ton of $$ (and time circling Michaels).

When I was wedding planning I couldn’t go into a Michael’s without spending at least $150. That Martha Stewart section gets me every time.

I always get sensory overload in Michaels… I was laughing at your punch story because I just did the same thing 2 night ago. I did FINALLY end up finding the corner punch and I’m giggling right now because it’s the same one you have pictured in the photo. Good luck with your projects!

I agree with D. Marie that there is so much stuff in Michaels, the staffers don’t even know what’s there! It’s kind of frustrating to ask them where the heat embossing tools are, and they tell you they either don’t have them or don’t know what they are. Huh? I make myself create a detailed list and stick to it when I go in there or else I would spend a gazillion doallrs each time.

I’m not kidding when I say that I was in Michael’s so many times before my wedding, I knew the names of all the check-out girls!

Aww Miss Cola! Cute post :) It’s okay… you’ll get a handle on it!

I bought a dual round corner punch from fiskars where you can flip to a small or large round edge… what a piece of crap! Any type of paper that is thicker than normal computer paper gets stuck in the little chamber & I have to pry it out with the end of a paper clip! I want a basic corner punch like yours!!
