Miss Snow's Picture
Miss Snow, Madison, WI/Asheville, NC Age and Occupation: 28, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Graphic Designer Engagement Date: August 5, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: Claxton Farm About Me: I am true Southern gal displaced in the beautiful and blustery midwest. A true theatre geek at heart, I love any kind of performance and spend most of my time researching old productions in dank library archives. When not in the library, I love music (punk rock, bluegrass, and everything in between), design in all forms, any reality TV show on Bravo (especially those that feature housewives or sharp knives), beer and wine from Oregon, and exploring the outdoors. My fiance and I are true best friends, and he inspires me every day. After a long and happy dating relationship, we’ve decided to tie the knot in the mountains of North Carolina, our home state. We’re planning a long-distance, largely-DIY, eco-conscious hip farm affair that celebrates family, friends, and love.
About Miss Snow

Oh Snap

November 20th, 2009 @ 10:33 am by Miss Snow

One aspect of our wedding that we really enjoyed researching was wedding photography. Mr Snow works with quite a bit photography as part of his job, and my dad is a photographer. We like snapping pictures, and we like thinking about and trying out interesting styles of photography. In the end, we chose our photographers because of their composition. To us, composition, or how photographers incorporate and weave together symmetry, depths of field, lines, and texture into the photographs, is most important to us.

But it is fun to geek out over all the cool photography styles out there.

So, instead of collecting a series of wedding photographs we liked (we’d be here for years… there are some seriously talented photographers out there), we had some fun daydreaming about photography styles. Here are some interesting photography approaches we thought might be cool for weddings:

Lomography/Holga:

Mr. Snow and I often take our Holga with us on vacation. These large plastic toy cameras produce dreamy pictures due to light leaks and simplistic construction. They’re not precise, and you never know what you’ll get, but both b&w and color pictures turn out really cool. Here’s some of our Holga photography (BTW, none of these have had any Photoshop or editing except to crop the negative):

I think B&W Holga photography could make for some amazing wedding shots.

Ring Flash:

Canon MR 14EX - Ring-type flash

Ring flashes were originally developed by dentists for lighting on close up photographs of teeth. Now they’re used for portraiture and fashion photography (think American Apparel catalogs). They’d be so cool for beautiful portraiture or for weddings in an urban/city setting.

Check out some great ringflash photos here: Orbis Ring Flash Gallery

Tilt Shift:

Wikipedia does a nice job of explaining this technique here. Wouldn’t tilt shift make for some impressive large groups shots or photos of the venue?

Check out some seriously cool tilt shift photography and links for tutorials here.

Of course, these are “If we had all the time in the world…” ideas. We trust our photographers implicitly and are really excited to see their artistry through our engagement and wedding photography.

What styles of photography do you love? How did you choose your photographer?

I love that you love Tilt Shift… There is the coolest Disney movie where they used it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyZfIlxwsfI
It’d be the cutest wedding video if they set it up and you could watch the wedding in miniature :)
LOVE your unique ideas

I love the Lomo cameras - the pictures always come out with such character! My friend also recently introduced me to the Diana camera (http://www.dianacamera.com/) - also makes for some really cool pics!

Ohhh! Amore Studios use the ring flash in our E-photos. The sunlight was so bright that day he had to use the ring flash to be eliminate lots of shadows. I felt like I was straight out of ANTM.

I’ve never heard of Lomo- but now I want to look into them… :-)
