A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)

Who’s Afraid of Color?

November 20th, 2009 @ 2:50 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

Though I will most likely go with a more traditional western/American style look on my wedding day in the end, I’ve found myself thinking more lately about how I might incorporate Pakistani elements and wondering if maybe a bridal lehenga might be the way to go, after all.

Who's Afraid of Color? : wedding color schemes Purpleg Dusty Gold Aurang shirt and lehenga, $2,000 from Bargello. Purple calla lilies, image from The Knot. Tejani bridal jewelry, image from Maharani. Bridal hair image from Maharani. Brian Atwood gold strappy leather ’Katie’ sandals, $636 from BlueFly.

I’m starting to feel more comfortable with color these days (although I would probably want to still find color that is more subtle if I do go this route). And, if I can find something that I love as much as some of the Bargello outfits (which are made to your measurements, so at least alterations should be minimal) in my price range, I might have to give this even more serious consideration. If I did, though, I would probably avoid the heavier head ornaments and dark makeup often sported by South Asian brides… I still want to look like myself, after all.

Are you deciding between a cultural dress and a Western, traditional white dress? What made you ultimately decide on one style?

What a gorgeous lehenga. If you do end up ordering one, share your experience! Part of the reason I am having mine custom-made, material included, is a paralyzing fear it would arrive completely different from what I had imagined. :)

The lehenga is the head piece? I love the idea of incorporating some Pakistani elements into your “Western” wedding day wear.

The Bargello outfit in the photo is beautiful I love the purple color and how well it goes with the flowers and accesories in the inspiration board. With your beautiful features this color would be beautiful on you.

I *wish* I could choose a cultural dress. But I’m so white, I’d never be able to pull it off! Western white wedding dresses are beautiful, but there’s something to be said for the tradition and culture of traditional garb.

That dress is AMAZING. AMAZING. Wow. I’m sad I’m white, lol. Or, “western” if i want to be politically correct

@Mrs. Mouse: The lehenga is the skirt (sometimes the skirt/blouse combo). The headpiece is called a ‘duputta’.
@D.Marie: Aw, thank you! :)
@KMSull: I bet you could! You’d just have to wear it like it belonged on you ;). It’s more about the confidence you project than the color of your skin!
@ejs4y8: Hey, there are white Indians out there ;).

Such a pretty inspiration board! No one in my family wore a traditional Korean dress to their wedding, so it’d be silly of me to be the first. : )

That is such a pretty inspiration board, I love the combo of the traditional purple dress with the more modern calla lilies!

Whose to say you could mix styles? Maybe do the dress in white and silver or white and gold? That way you can still have Western/American and Pakistani? =D
