My super-talented fiance and I are attempting to DIY a majority of our massive (~350 guests) "clean & modern, yet romantic, but completely unexpected, with a teeny dash of vintage" wedding, stay within our not-so-massive budget, and somehow get a really luxe (but still fun!) look/feel at the same time. A Few Small Tasks - Done!

November 21st, 2009 @ 5:35 pm by Mrs. Ramen

I know it’s a bit pathetic to post about something so miniscule, but it was a huge relief to start checking things off of my list!

A few weeks ago, I was back home, escaping school. So we decided to go get our marriage license!
You can’t bring cameras into any of the AZ courthouses, so we just took a picture of ourselves at my house. When we first arrived at the North Phoenix facility, there was no wait! We just had to fill out some paperwork and give them our driver’s licenses… yeah, except for the fact that I LEFT MINE AT HOME. So we drove all the way back to my house and then back to get our license. I think Mr. Ramen was a wee bit frustrated, but he quickly got over it.

CRAZY - because we’re really getting married! For those of you AZ girls who plan on changing their names like moi, you can actually bring your signed marriage license to the marriage license people after your wedding and get your certified marriage certificate/license thing the same day. OR you can mail it in and wait for a few months. Needless to say, I will be bringing it in the Monday after our wedding, especially since I need to change my name on all my legal docs prior to moving back to AZ. I’m just wondering if we should change my name on our honeymoon plane tickets (we leave exactly 1 week after our wedding for Aruba!)?

And, probably the easiest DIY I’ve done to date: a card-cage. I purchased this bad boy from someone on Craigslist for about $10. It was a really really tacky color and had a mess of some kind of decoration crap tied to the top. I hacked that up, saved the pearl beads that were entwined, and then got to work Ramenizing it. Mr. R has quite the collection of spray paint from his days as a tagger. JK. Apparently there are 1 million shades of grey/silver/gray, and Mr. R liked most of them and used them for various ID projects in school. They have since become my property and I consider spray painting my second hobby. This is a mix of different grey/grays and a silver/platinum. I recommend wearing a face mask to protect your lungs and brain, and covering EVERY INCH of ground around you in a 10 foot radius with old newspaper to make sure you don’t accidental spray paint your parents’ backyard. Oops.

I topped it off with some leftover pink ribbon and one of my failed dyed coffee filter flowers. Success!

What things have you done some creative spray painting to?

Hooray for marriage license! I love that birdcage. I’ve thought about doing something like that.

My creative spray painting will come into play for our signage, methinks. I’m going to get sort-of ornate wooden frames, and then spray paint those suckers strong colors. Exciting. :)

It looks so pretty! I’m sad that you aren’t doing any more dyed coffee filters–that one looks awesome!

Thinking back, it was quite an ordeal when my husband and I had to go through the process of obtaining the plethora of identification information that needed to be changed right before and after we were married. My best advice is to take it one identication project at a time–whether it is the marriage license, social security card, driver’s license, title changed on my car, named changed on our mortgage (wait…did I do that yet…hmm), named changed on all the social networking sites (ha), contacting utility companies, cell phone provider, name at work, letters to my alma mater, etc. It seemed like the list was endless to change, and it took me a while to get it all done.

Thus, even though it can be overwhelming to change your name through all these separate entities, it maybe helpful to plan beforehand so that you know what identification needs to be changed first so that you can obtain a name change through other entities. For example, I had to change my social security card information and submit a faxed copy to my place of work before they would change my name.

On another note, my spray painting escapade began with the small red wagon we used for a flower girl during our wedding ceremony. We covered the red with white satin, and the wheels we spray painted gold. At first I was scared it might look tacky, but it really turned into an elegant addition to our ceremony. Also, we bought a very large, $30 antique mirror and spay painted the frame gold. On the mirror we applied a focal point that we found at Wonder Graffiti Weddings and it was a beautiful and creative idea we incoporated behind the bride, groom and parent’s table we had during the reception dinner.

In order to get on the flight, you probably need to have ID with a name that matches the one on the plane ticket. :-)

That bird cage looks great! :) Yay for the license… does it feel real yet? I’m still 8 months out & kind of in denial lol… I imagine having that piece of paper makes it feel extremely real & exciting!

That birdcage is awesome - and congrats on the marriage license - that is so exciting!!!!!

I haven’t done any spray painting before, but I’m sure I’ll come up with some project that requires it!

Cool on the marriage license AND the bird cage. I wish we had taken a photo when we got our marriage license.

I am sure we will end up doing some spraypainting projects too, what a great way to easily turn found objects into personalized details. @fiftyfootbride, I’m thinking the same thing about the signage.

I have read that brides can run into big problems booking their honeymoon ticket in their married name, since their ID usually isn’t in the new name yet, so be careful!

I would NOT change the name on your plane ticket. It’s Aruba, so you need a passport, right? It takes longer than a week to change your passport, and you probably need the name on the ticket and the passport to match.

The name on your plane ticket MUST match your passport for international flights! They won’t let you fly if the names don’t match. I’m not going on the honeymoon until a few months later and we’re still booking everything in my maiden name because there’s not much time to get the changed passport and it would be a disaster to not be able to leave the country.

The state of PA let me keep my old driver’s license, so I technically have two id’s while I’m waiting to recieve all of my new cards for insurance, etc.

I would suggest waiting to change your passport, because you’ll have to mail in your old one in order to recieve a new one!

Nicely done! Thanks for the spray painting tips, I’m tackling my own birdcage once it gets warm around here again.
