About Mrs. Trail Mix

Ahhhhh, the honeymoon. I seriously cannot wait! By the time Mr Trail Mix and I actually embark on our travels, it will have been close to 2 years since we have taken a vacation together.

I will say that the Mr and I travel very well together, which I like to think is a good sign. It feels like when you travel with someone else, you have to get on very well with them to have a good time, which we always do.

So, dear bees, I would like your opinion on where to go for our honeymoon. We’ve narrowed down the list to 4 possibilities (although we are still open to other ideas so if you think you have a better one, shout it out!).

Idea #1- St John

We’ve been here before since Mr Trail Mix has very close relatives who live there. The last time we went was in 2006 and it was one of the best vacations I’ve ever been on. Mr TM’s relatives have a beautiful house in Cruz Bay we could stay in (complete with its own hot tub, deck and kitchen, yowza!) and they are always so welcoming and friendly. This would definitely be the most economical of our options. St John’s (in my mind) is one of the most beautiful places ever…

I sooooo want to be back there right now!

Idea #2- Costa Rica

I did a semester abroad here in Heredia, a small city in Costa Rica, when I was a junior in college but I’ve only been back once since 2004. Mr Trail Mix and I took a 5-day trip there in 2008 and it was awesome! The best way I can think of to describe CR in my mind is my home away from home; truly siempre in mi corazon.

I would love to return, because between the beaches, hiking, wildlife, volcanoes, horseback riding, fresh mango smoothies, fishing and zip lines, and there is more than enough of the perfect combination of beach relaxing time and wild adventure time for any and everyone, no matter which perfect, little beach town you end up at…

The last time we went, we stayed in Manuel Antonio, which is about 3 hours south of San Jose. I’d love to get back to the Guanacaste Peninsula and re-visit some of my favorite sleepy surfer villages. Serious bliss.

Idea #3- Brazil

Between Rio and Buzios, it’s the perfect combination of old city architecture and beautiful beach town. I’ve always wanted to go to Brazil and heard nothing but good things. However, I speak Spanish, not Portuguese so that’s a little bit of a downside. I would love to go somewhere Spanish-speaking so I could practice a bit. However…

I would happily drink a mojito on this beach…

Idea #4- The Galapagos Islands and Ecuador

This one would be the wildcard of the group. It would definitely be the hardest to coordinate but possibly the coolest. I will say, it has always been one of the top places Mr Trail Mix has wanted to visit at some point in his life.

I think the wildlife is a big draw for the Mr…

Hmmmm, this not going to be a easy choice…

I think we have several good options for the honeymoon but I’m pretty undecided about which one to choose. All four have appeal but a lot of the decision will have to be based on our budget and what kind of job Mr Trail Mix is able to obtain after finishing school in May.

If money were no object, which one of these four would you choose, and why?

Have you visited any of these places? What did you think?

I would go somewhere you’ve both never been so it’s a real adventure that you can share. Plus, trying to have your honeymoon somewhere you’ve already had a wonderful trip might not let the honeymoon outshine the previous trip. Out of the above, Galapagos would be my pick!

I have been to several of these options… I agree, St John is FAB, and one of my MOST favorite places on the planet, however… do you really want to spend your honeymoon with family? It’s a bargain, go another time… I vote for GALAPAGOS/Equador, where neither of you have been… seriously that would be Ahhhmazing!

Honestly, ALL of the above options sound wonderful. Costa Rica is beautiful like you said. I was there for 5 days last year and I’m DYING to go back. My FH’s family is from Ecuador and Galapagos is very inticing as well. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your honeymoon at anyone of these locations. Have fun!

I second Mrs. Cowboy Boot- you should definitely go somewhere you haven’t been before. My vote would be for Brazil!

These all sound awesome. St. John was our dream honeymoon spot, but it didn’t fit in the budget. I think it would be cool to go somewhere you haven’t been yet.

I agree that you should go somewhere you haven’t been before. My vote is for the Galapagos. Man, I would love to go there! So if money and coordination of travel were no object, that would be my pick.

I agree with going somewhere you both have never been. We didn’t and I kinda of regret it. I’d been to the general area before, but different resort. Of course, some of it may have been the Tropical Storm.

Either Brazil or Ecuador! Somewhere new, and somewhere in South America! I definitely want to visit SA on my next overseas trip. (Look out, Mrs. Bear Cub!)

We went to Brazil and love love loved it!!! Went to Rio and the islands of Fernando de Noronha. We did the first few cds of the Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese and managed pretty well (both of us speak Spanish). Brazil was the perfect blend of exotic, new, and lovely honeymoon’ness. Heck, I will even send you my language materials!

Agree with those before that you should go somewhere new and Brazil is AMAZING! Rio is such a magical city and Buzios is the cutest beach town. You could also check out Paraty- it’s a little more sleepy like what you were talking about in Costa Rica. I don’t speak a lick of Portuguese and I got around fine there, many people speak decent English or Spanish and everyone is so friendly, you’d be fine with a basic phrase book.
All the options would be great though- can’t wait to see what you decide!

I’d vote for Brazil - and the Portuguese could be a fun challenge for you and Mr TM!

I’d vote for Brazil, but you have to get a Visa to go… so, that might be an extra step you’d have to plan (and budget) for… Whatever you do, definately go somewhere you both haven’t been before.

The galapagos are amazing, really spectacular. True vacation. Though I would say perhaps not the best honeymoon place, since you’re on a boat with other guests and each day are tours of the islands, which are amazing. But on our honeymoon in Sept. I was so glad to have days with no planned activites just get to decompress and relax and snuggle whenever we felt like it. Definitely go to the galapagos, but perhaps as a 5-yr anniversary spot!

First of all, definitely go somewhere new! There are millions of places in the world and most people never go to enough new places.

My FI is from Brazil, so I’ve visited twice so far (3rd time coming up!) The first time I was there, we went up to Salvador and Morro de Sao Paulo (in Bahia). They are both amazing places, I’d highly recommend them! Especially Morro de Sao Paulo, which is an island with no cars and basically a giant beach. Its a very safe place (unusual for Brazil) and very friendly and welcoming. Here is the hotel we stayed at, its amazing:

Also, keep in mind, in the travel industry in Brazil, most people speak English (or can get by in Spanish) so you shouldn’t have a problem.
