DIY - How to “Silkscreen” a Gift

November 24th, 2009 @ 6:42 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

For my bridesmaids gifts I purchased reusable water bottles and had their names engraved on them. Then I purchased plain canvas tote bags and “silkscreened” the bird image we’ve used throughout the wedding. I wanted something that was leaning toward being eco-friendly and that would remind them of the our wedding. I say “silkscreen” because I didn’t use photo emulsion or screen blocker, I really used a stencil. If you’re only doing a few items with a simple image, then a stencil is perfect. Here is how I did it, D’orsay style. Acquire a Speedball silk screening kit (do a Google search), the fabric ink in the color you’d like (available online and at Jo-Ann’s) and choose your image.

Print your image, then trace it to freezer paper.

Cut the image out using an X-Acto knife. Be sure to leave “bridges” if you need them. Bridges connect the base of the image to the inside bits. I’m probably horrible at explaining the white space issue, but basically, the parts you’ve cut out will the parts that get inked. So if you cut out the eye without a bridge, the bird won’t have an eye; it will just be completely colored in.

Using a nice, flat surface, place down a barrier, then lay your item (shirt, dress, tote) with a piece of paper inside (so the paint won’t bleed through), and pin it down using your screen. Pour your paint onto the screen and make a few deliberate passes with your squeegee. After you’re positive the image has been fully covered, peel up your screen and freezer paper.

Then you’ll go back through and fill in the bridges.

If you aren’t careful when you’re pinning the screen down, or if you aren’t careful when you peel the screen and paper up, then you can get ink on the back of your stencil. You can re use it, but you have to wait for everything to dry. It’s also important to wash your screen. Every time I use it, I stain it, but you just really don’t want your screen to dry with paint particulate on it. So after the stencil looked like this, I had to take a break.

Let the tote (or whatever) dry then iron it a bit to make sure the image has set. You’re all done!

I got really excited when I saw your title, because I wish there was a way I could silk screen my own vintage hankies for bridal shower invites, but then after reading your process I realized this is nearly impossible to do if there is wording involved. Love your DIY’ing skills nonetheless!

instead of using freezer paper, take this from an art nut who has done lots of “silk screening” use mactack or sticky paper whatever you want to call it… print out your image on it, or even trace and draw it out onto it. this is the stuff that is sticky on one side and plastic on the other. that way you dont have to worry about link oozage when you are swipping ink across the screen.

or for a total slackers way of doing “silk screening” is buy just buying the ink, making sure the item is washed so there are no starches on it and just paint the ink on. let it dry, iron, and do a couple layers like that. i have several shirts i’ve done this way and 6 years later they are still going strong. this may work if you are wanting to do writing of some sort and are patient… it has for me.

Did you iron the freezer paper down? If you use freezer paper, put the shiny side towards the shirt and iron. Then it has an amazing seal and makes really crisp designs. You wont need a silk screening kit either. Just a spongy pain brush will work wonderfully. I swear, go try it now!

Wow, cool! I like how it turned out! I wanna try, but it looks kinda messy–I would probably get ink all over the carpet!

Cute bags! I love how the wing looks like a heart. I’m not DIY-ing the bridesmaid gifts, as the only crafts I’m really good at involve glue sticks and crayons. :P

Very cool! I bet you will give Mr. Snow tons of DIY screen-printing ideas…

I might DIY a little somethin’ for my ladies, but Momma Snow has taken on the BM goodies with gusto, and she puts together phenomenal goodie/gift bags (can’t say much b/c they read the blogs…)

I wish I could screen print… I love your tutorial but I just imagine my fiance coming home to find me covered with paint and no finished projects :)

really cool idea! I wanted to screen our table runner but I guess I should do something small before jumping to that, I’m going to try to talk Mr. Poodle to try something for the groomsman!
