Mrs. Pretzel's Picture
Mrs. Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
About Mrs. Pretzel

When Mr Pretzel and I started to talk about getting married we didn’t spend more than a minute talking about where the ceremony location would be.

Mr P: You want Fr Jim to marry us?

Miss P: Of course.

Mr P: OK, Saint B’s it is.

You see we are registered at two different Catholic parishes located a mere 5 miles apart. We split our time at both Churches, but we are more involved at the Church I am registered at. The choice didn’t even warrant a full conversation—easy-checkitoffthelist-done.

We did, however, spend more time talking about the type of reception venue that we wanted. Both of us had attended our fair share of wedding receptions in banquet halls and country clubs. We agreed that neither of these fit “us”. The words that we used to describe the type of location we wanted were urban, loft, brick, airy, open, modern. In early summer I did some web research to get an idea what was out there and how much it might cost.

The criteria I was working with:

  • Seattle or North Seattle (I excluded the East Side, or anything South of Downtown)
  • 150+ people
  • Open Catering preferred (we had found a catering company we wanted to work with already)
  • Loft-like
  • Not a hotel/country club/banquet hall

Working with those limited criteria I found two contenders. Pravda Studios in Capital Hill and The Loft by Russell Dean Catering in Bothell. Since we weren’t engaged yet I created a file with all the info and tucked it away. Here is how these two venues stacked up.

The Loft by Russell dean Lowell

The Loft is actually the loft of an old barn. It has high arching ceilings with a plethora of wood. Even though it didn’t fit our urban feel I kept coming back to it because of the beauty of the wood and the high ceilings. The pluses and minuses:

+ Located just minutes from our ceremony location

+ Reasonable price

+ BEE-u-tiful!

- Located in the ‘burbs not the city

- Despite its name—it isn’t an urban loft—it’s a barn

- Restrictive policies that may make decorating or having a band or photo booth problematic

- Not open catering—although Russell dean Lowell is a wonderful caterer.

Pravda Studios

Operating as a natural light photography studio, Pravda also rents the space out for weddings and special events. It is in Seattle’s Capital Hill neighborhood and oozes urban chic. The space is HUGE, full of windows/natural light and is a virtual blank slate.

How did Pravda fair on the pluses and minuses?

+ Large

+ It’s an urban loft!

+ The windows and light *swoon*

+ In the city

+ Open catering (our favorite catering company is a preferred vendor)

- Parking in Cap Hill is a nightmare but Pravda has it’s own parking lot

- $$$$ at the top end of what we thought we would be willing to pay for a venue rental

Hummm… what could the Pretzel do with this space? I took a peek at what other brides had done in the space, and promptly fell off my chair.

*SWOON* Mr P and I were in love with the sleek modern styling. Our minds were spinning with the possibilities. Secretly we were pretty certain that we had found our venue. But we were a long ways from setting a date (we weren’t yet engaged) and knew that nothing was set in stone yet. We also hadn’t seen the space in person, we both felt funny about going to see a place before we were officially engaged. This was in June. Would we change our minds before our engagement in September?

What type of venue did you fall for early in your wedding planning? Was it the same type of venue that you ultimately chose?

Wow, both spaces are gorgeous. I am blown away by how different each couple was able to make Pravda look.

One of my best friends had her reception at Pravda!! She loved it. I don’t think you could go wrong with either of your choices. They’re both fantastic.

be careful falling in love with a place like that. Yeah it looks beautiful when all the brides decorated it their different ways, but I wonder how much it cost them to have all those lights strung, plants brought in, and curtains hung up to make it feel cozier. I’m just saying, if it is already at the top end of your budget it is going to cost you even more to get it to look like what those brides did. And at a place like that you probably won’t be able to go in and decorate yourself, so then you will be paying for outside help to come in and install all those items.

But it is a lovely space overall!

Wow! I’m in love with it now too! It’s amazing how different it looks in each picture.

We basically chose our venue because there weren’t too many options in our small town for the cost.

Oh Pretzel, I was soooo in love with Pravda… until my mother threw a fit about how much extra work it would be to have the wedding at a venue where we would essentially have to worry about everything (tables, chairs, linens, etc)…. killed my dream right there. Sadness! We ended up at the W Hotel though, so I managed to get my cool, hip vibe even though it’s a *boooo* hotel ballroom.

Love the lofty vibe. If we had had a bigger wedding, we would have gone the urban loft route. Instead, we went with a vintage bed and breakfast / inn for our 40 person ordeal.

I like the loft a lot. You can really change it up to whatever you want it to look like! (But the decor could get expensive since you’re starting with such a blank slate.)

When we started planning our DW, it was kind of a shot in the dark since neither one of us had stayed anywhere in St. Thomas. We knew we wanted somewhere reasonably priced with a great view and that’s what we ended up with.

@Ms. Min Pin: A greenhouse sounds great! Do you have photos to share? I am intrigued!

@amariem25: Good points! What I’ve learned in my research so far is that using a full catering service is the way to go. they do the food, rentals, decor, etc… and they can blend that with your own DIY or you can bring in your own crew. Places that are just spaces have a lot of flexibility but I agree- it would cost a pretty penny to have the place done up like some of the photos.

@Miss Nachos: I am embarrassed to say that it took until yesterday for me to figure out what DW was… all of Mrs Seabreeze’s posts/recaps and I had a mental block- Duh! I can’t say it enough… I love St Thomas!

We were looking for just about the same as you, same city even. Unfortunately, our #1 choice fell through (415 Westlake) so we opened it up to inside caterers. Finally on a whim I called the Space Needle and it worked out perfectly :)

Pravda is seriously gorgeous, but I’m a sucker for barns….I could see how it could be a little frustrating with the restrictions though. Our venue has a dedicated caterer, and honestly, I kinda looked at it as “One thing I don’t have to worry about finding!” Part of our decision was the one-stop-shopping appeal (lol, there I go with my classy-speak) of our venue. Our event coordinator will seriously take care of everything!

Oooh, I want to know what you chose!

We considered Pravda too, but ditched that idea when we figured out how expensive it would be + bringing caterers in, decorating the space, etc. I hope you end up at the loft bc I’d love to see what you do to it!
