Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/Vermont Age and Occupation: 26, High School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: August 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall Reception About Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.
About Mrs. Pudding

MILdor?

November 24th, 2009 @ 6:20 pm by Mrs. Pudding

Wedding lingo is quite extensive. From FI, to MOH, to STDs, you can really get lost in all of the acronyms! Recently, I have made an important addition to my bride-to-be vocabulary: friendor.

Now, from my understanding, a friendor is a friend or acquaintance who agrees to “work” at your wedding for a minimum or no fee. I plan on fully taking advantage (uhm… exploiting) the talents of my family and friends at our wedding, and will post about this in the future.

So here is a question for you: what do you call a future Mother in Law that agrees to replace an important vendor for your wedding? A MILdor? Is it just me, or does that sound too much like Frodo’s destination?

I am extremely lucky to have a Mother in Law who is a wedding cake expert. She has made the wedding cakes of all the brides and grooms in her family (and the fact that she has 10 siblings makes this quite a feat!). She is not a professional baker, but her work is definitely professional.

Here are some examples:

MILdor? : wedding cake 100 018 (photo by Mr. Pudding)

A cake made by FMIL Pudding for her niece’s wedding in Chicago - Summer 2009

MILdor? : wedding cake Wedding012 Cake made for Mr. Pudding’s uncle’s wedding in New Hampshire - Summer 2006

I was thrilled when FMIL Pudding volunteered to make our cake. I was hoping that she would offer, but didn’t want to pressure her into it, since it will add extra stress to an already stressful (although joyous) day. Despite this, FMIL was up to the challenge, and I was thrilled that our cake would be beautiful, full of sentimental value, and, as awful as it sounds, free!

I am envisioning something inspired by the crispness of a well tailored dress shirt. I am a major fan of the white dress shirt with an unexpected ruffle, bow, or tuck, so this aesthetic seems fitting. This is the Martha cake inspiration:

MILdor? : wedding cake Mwd1036 I LOVE everything about this cake. I would not change a thing. The problem? The frosting is made with gum paste and fondant. Mr. Pudding, FMIL Pudding, and I all agree that fondant is, well, not the most appetizing option for our cake. My “baker” makes fantastic buttercream and cream cheese frostings, and I want our cake to taste as good as it looks. I am hoping that she can figure out a way to replicate this cake without sacrificing flavor… perhaps only use fondant for the bows and flourishes, and buttercream for the rest of the design? I’m not sure how easy this would be, or if it’s even possible, but I sure hope that we can, as Tim Gunn would say, “make it work”.

Are you having a family member bake your wedding cake? Are there any logistical issues that you’ve run into when having a friend or family member bake your wedding cake?

Oh, that is so awesome. I often feel like I’m a bad bride for not knowing anyone who can be a friendor for us. ;)

I am having my aunt make my cake, and like your MIL, she has made NUMEROUS wedding cakes, and I love them all! I am allergic to wheat and dairy though, and the FI does’t really care for cake either, so we are trying to think of other options.

you can still use fondant, it goes over buttercream, when i do cakes i do an extra thick layer of buttercream and pull the fondant off before eating. that way you can have the look and the taste, just to let you know.

We are having a friend of FMIL make our wedding cake for an amazing price! Also not a professional baker, but her work is professional. We are meeting with her over the holidays to pick out something we like.

If I were you Miss Pudding, forget the fondant. It tastes blargh, as you already know. I bet your FMIL can put something nice together using buttercream or cream cheese icing. Fondant just for the flourishes, like you said, is a better idea!

How exciting! Those cakes look great! My sister will be making our cake! She’s never made one, but she’ll be making one for another friend a few months before our wedding, and I totally trust her abilities - she’s amazing!!

That’s so awesome! My aunt made my graduation cake, and it was giant, beautiful, and was essentially a wedding cake. We declined her offer to do the one for the wedding, however, because we thought she’d have more fun hanging out. (Even though her cakes are stellar! We’re nervous about doing the friend/family-dor thing).

My mom is making my cake. My grandparents owned a bakery when she was growing up, so she’s made hundreds of wedding cakes, although not professionally since her summers in college. For my wedding she has branched out into fondant. I wouldn’t recomend having your FMIL try fondant without a lot of practice first. My mother took a class and made about 8 practice cakes before she was satisfied. Plus it really doesn’t taste good, although was easily removed when we tasted all the practice cakes.

Umm make sure your venue allows it! I was going to have my grandma make our wedding cake (she’d made wedding cakes in our family for over 30 years). We had shopped around for a venue that would allow us to do this. We found the perfect one, signed the contract and thought we were all set to go. Then the venue’s management changed and all of a sudden they said we couldn’t have my grandma make the cake anymore because of liability issues. Even though in our contract it said any persons could make the cake. I was trying to fight them on it and then they said they would charge us extra fees if my grandma made the cake. I was really upset about this and still am to this day. But in the end we had to go with a bakery. The cake still turned out great though and there was less stress on my grandma.

I’m a cake baker too… and I only use buttercream. There is a way to texturize buttercream so that it would be similar to the cake shown…

@penga: I’ll look into that!

@fiftyfootbride:I’d be nervous about anyone but my FMIL - I’ve tasted her cakes, and they are awesome. I also know where she lives… ;p

@amariem25: That’s what’s great about our not-so-glamorous venue….anything goes!

That looks really great!

I’m thinking about making our wedding cake. I don’t trust anyone else so far.

My mom is making our cake! She made my brother’s cake, sister’s cake, and countless other cakes for friends and family members. However, she always uses stabilized whipped cream, which has gelatin whipped into it so you can pipe it. It holds up really well, but does need some extra fridge time when its hot out. Super light and tasty, too! I’m very thankful that she’s willing to share that skill with us.
