This weekend will mark sixth months of marriage for the Taffys. We will spend our anniversary moving out of Ann Arbor and closer to Detroit. Leaving Ann Arbor is bittersweet for me, but I have some big news that will explain the move: I have a new job!!! :)

Job searching for the last year in the current economic climate has been very challenging! The Weddingbee community was a great source of support not only during my wedding planning, but during the job search. I want to thank the bees, and all of you who provided support through my blog posts and on the boards. You are awesome, and I cannot thank you enough for your support!

I am thrilled to accept a great position in my field, and can’t wait to begin working again! We aren’t leaving Ann Arbor to be closer to Detroit, much as we love it; we are moving to be closer to the border. Yes, my new job is in Canada!

For now, Mr. Taffy will continue working in Ann Arbor, and our primary home will be in the Detroit area. Since my new job in Ontario is closer to Toronto than the Detroit / Windsor border, I will be commuting home to Michigan on the weekends. We are hoping that being apart during the week will be short term, but at this point we aren’t sure how things will play out. Moving out of Ann Arbor and closer to Detroit means a longer daily commute for Mr. Taffy, but it also has some great benefits: it is an hour closer to my new job than Ann Arbor, and our new neighborhood is full of our close friends, including Mr. Taffy’s two best friends! I know it will be wonderful for Mr. T to be so close to them during the week while I am gone.

Given the economic climate, It seems like it is becoming more common for couples to have this sort of commuting situation. (I found this article to be interesting.) I know there are lots of long distance relationships out there, but is there anyone in the hive that has a commuting, or has a weekends-only relationship? I would love to hear your stories and any advice that you may have.

I am so excited to share our wedding with you, and can’t wait to start blogging about it eventually. Thank you for your patience, and don’t forget your dear old Taffy! ;)

I have so much to be thankful for on this holiday weekend. I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Much Love,
Mrs. Taffy

Welcome to Canada! Also, my parents do the commuting thing (home is Ottawa, dad works in Montreal) and they actually kind of love it. Dad gets to watch Monday night football in peace, and mom can spend time with her girlfriends, and then they see each other weekends and sometimes a couple of nights during the week.

My husband lives in Maryland and I am finishing up my graduate work in Illinois, so we only see each other every 3-4 weeks for a couple of days at a time. Though you will see your husband more frequently, we found that video chatting is essential. Once we got webcams and started chatting “face to face” every night it made a big difference in our happiness! Just a thought! Good luck with your new job!

I’m so glad you posted this! My husband and I have only been married 4 months and started the weekend thing two months ago! The reactions we get from other people are priceless, most assume our marriage is already underwater, but the truth is it’s stronger than ever! No one can seem to understand, but we too did it for his job, he has a studio apartment and I live in our home, and even with rent and a mortgage, we’re doing better financially than ever. Just make sure to spend time together on the weekends! We’ve had to learn how to say no to friends and family when we need time together. The hardest part was learning how to talk on the phone to each other! But we’ve worked out most the kinks already.

And congrats on your new job and good luck!

When I was 7 my dad took a job in Ohio while the rest of the family lived in KY (4 hrs away). He came home on weekends and my parents were in that situation for about 6 months. Then we moved in with my grandparents 2 hrs away and my parents commuted back to be with us on the weekends until they bought a house and we were all back in the same place. It wasn’t bad at all to me as a 7 yo. :) Although you may want to ask my mother how she felt at the time ;)

We’ve had a weekends only relationship for the past 9 months, starting just after we got married. We always knew it had an end-date, which I think is important.

Basically, it has been fine, but it has meant we felt “in limbo” for a long time, which makes it harder to feel grown up and married and so on! Happy for you to email me if you’re interested in stories etc :)

Congrats on the new job! And where is your new place in the Detroit area? I live about a half hour north of Detroit so I welcome you to the area :)
My man’s parents did the weekends only thing for about 3 years I think. His mom lived here in MI and his dad lived in the London area of Ontario and it worked out well for them, I believe they’re going on 21 years now.
Oh, and have fun in the Toronto area! I absolutely love it out there.

Congrats on the job! Even in Canada! Did you know you’ll actually travel south to cross the border?

And glad to hear you are moving your permanent residence closer to the D. Welcome, from my little corner of SE Oakland Co!!

That’s so great you found a new job, but I’m sorry about the having to be apart thing! That really stinks.

As someone who is employed by a Detroit based company I know that in-field employement is hard to find right now…so…Congrats on the new job!! and Good luck with the move, and in adjusting to your new schedules.

and how sad it is that up until 6 months ago I was spending one week a month in either Detroit or AA and NEVER once crossed over to visit Canada?
