Wedding Hair

November 24th, 2009 @ 2:20 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

My hair is neither particularly long nor thick (in fact, it’s mid-length and pretty thin-looking if I don’t take a lot of effort with it). But for our wedding, I’m hoping for something kind of like this:

Wedding Hair : wedding hair Patrick (source)

That’s obviously not going to happen naturally: I’d need to get over a foot of length, and about double the volume of hair, in only a few months! So instead I’m starting to look into extensions.

I’ve heard enough people say that you shouldn’t get extensions for your wedding day because “you won’t look like yourself.” I say, PHOOEY.

I don’t want to look like myself; I want to look better than myself! I would probably only want to add a few inches of length (mid-back is fine), but I think a bit of extra thickness would really make my hair look better. I’m sure it wouldn’t be so big of a change that I wouldn’t recognize myself in pictures later, and enough of one that I’d be really happy with the pictures if they are done well.

The problem is that I don’t really know where to go for answers to my hair extension questions. I know that I want clip-ins (permanent extensions can cause a lot of damage, and I don’t want to leave them in for more than a day anyway), but I’m not sure how important it is to have them dyed to my exact hair color (that costs a lot more), what quality to get, or where to get them from. And I definitely don’t know how to style them!

Ugh, more research to do. Are you an extensions expert? Do you have any tips on successful clip-in extensions?

I love the look of extensions and since I HATE having long hair (it makes me insane to have to do something with it unless I throw it in a ponytail), I’ll probably have to resort to them!

I got clip-in extensions at Sally Beauty Supply and they are AMAZING! This is a link to the ones I bought. http://www.sallybeauty.com/Hair-Extensions/EURNXT02,default,pd.html

They are human hair and blend in so well with my natural hair. In addition, they are extremely easy to put in by myself. I couldn’t be more pleased. If you do get these, sign up for the Sally Beauty Card. It’s $5 for a year, but will save you about $15 off the extensions. I bought the 18 inch set, but it’s also available in 14 inches. Hope that helps!

I feel like extension have come a long way since my prom days, back in the dark ages. Do you have a trusted hair stylist you could talk to? What about those extensions Jessica Simpson is always hawking?

I’ve heard really good things about the Jessica Simpson extensions, so you might want to check those out.

I’ve heard good things about the Jessica Simpson ones and even gasp, Paris Hilton’s. It’s probably easier to use ones that are just giving you volume rather than length, because they don’t have to match exactly.

I’ve only had permanent extensions, but they didn’t damage my hair. I had gone to a salon in Sweden which specializes in that sort of thing and I was extremely happy with the results. I had colored my hair a month before I had them done, so the hairdresser matched the fake hair to the color I had and then added some aqua extensions in for some flair.

I’ve heard a lot about the Jessica Simpson’s hair clip-ons. Maybe try looking into that?

Good luck!

I’d love to see how they turn out–you should definitely do a “before/after” post!

I made extensions for a friend this weekend. She’s a natural red-head, so I was certain the hair would have to be dyed to match. We went to the “hair store”. I told the clerk that we wanted a mid-grade, solid color human hair. The little lady behind the counter took one look at her hair and pulled out the perfect shade of red. They are a PERFECT match. She wore them to work yesterday and said she heard, “wow, I hadn’t noticed how long your hair is getting” from 10 different people. Go to your local wig/hair store. The ones around me have a gigantic selection.
You will definitely want human hair so it can be styled with heat.
I measured where I wanted the “tracks” to go on her head (you want to make sure you don’t go too high so you have plenty of hair to cover the clips). I made three different clip-in pieces for the sections of her hair. I also tripled the layers of the extension hair to add the thickness we were trying to obtain. I stitched wig clips onto the track. From there, she put all three tracks in and we trimmed the extension hair for a more natural look.
The whole project only cost her about $40.

Ah, my area of expertise!!

I’ve done lots of extensions and for clip ons, the Jessica Simson ones are good but a little pricey compared to the ones you can find at Sally’s. #1 rule: ONLY buy real hair! You can’t use heat on synthetic hair because it will actually melt. This means no blow dryer, no curling irons or flat irons. Synthetic also tends to be really shiny like doll hair so it ends up looking really fake.

Sally’s is the way to go, and the ones that marquettemonv15 recommended are awesome (and the ones I use regularly on people).

I have thought about doing this, but don’t know about the cost…I wish I didn’t cut my hair :(

And I wouldn’t dye extensions - it will hurt the quality of the hair and there’s no way to know what the color will turn out like since you don’t know the history of the hair (if it’s been colored before, if it’s all from the same person which it most likely is not, etc). Try to look for extensions that are closest to your natural color. They’re out there, I promise!

Ooh, thanks for posting this! :) I’m also looking to do extensions more for volume than length, and this is great info!

I think Mrs. Lemon wrote a post about her extensions, and she looked great!

I’m of the medium lengthed, fine and limp hair and extensions will absolutely be making an appearance on the big day. I too have heard good things about the Jessica Simpson ones…although Miss Nacho might be able to sell me on the ones from Sallys.

You are all awesome. I’m going to try Euronext first since I hear the JS ones are overpriced. I’ll let you all know how it goes!

I love the look of extensions but unfortunately can’t justify the expense to have them professionally done so I tried the JS ones. From my experience with JS extensions, they are good for a night on the town but I would not use them for my wedding day. ONE, you can’t curl them because they are synthetic (although you can buy curly ones) and TWO you can really tell the difference between your hair and the extensions because they are much shinier. Hope this helps!

I photographed a wedding a few weeks ago where the bride wore clip in real human hair extensions. She was able to buy some that were a very close match to her natural color and they were only used near the nape of her neck. She had an updo and you really couldn’t tell that there were extensions at all! I think it was a great idea! Plus, a few days later the groom and groomsmen had reused them as rattails which was fun to watch.

great lengths extensions are the way to go… I am getting them done for my wedding as well. They are a bit pricey, but you get good quality hair that is not going to make your hair look damaged and dry in photos.
