Becoming a Birdcage Bride

November 25th, 2009 @ 10:50 am by Mrs. Cheeseburger

Birdcage veils.

Yet another thing I had never heard of until I started reading wedding blogs. I recognized them as the veil styles from Sweet Home Alabama and Fantastic Four 2, and also from vintage wedding (and funeral) pictures, but I hadn’t realized that they were all the rage right now. After seeing them in pictures over and over again, I started to wonder if I could possibly become a birdcage bride…

“Would the style look right on me?”

“Am I going to “date” my wedding with this look (not that the purple shoes aren’t already doing that for me) ;)?”’

“Would this look ’go’ with the rest of my bridal vision?”

Sigh.

I remained undecided for quite some time.

Eventually, I tabled the decision by reasoning that I should wait until after getting my dress to decide on headgear. Makes sense, right? In the meantime, however, I bookmarked every DIY how-to that I came across and saved lots of inspirational pictures.

I love the look of almost all the styles I’ve seen, but I was particularly drawn to the more minimalistic styles that only framed the top of the face, as you can see in most of the pictures above.Once I had my dress (that adventure is up next!), I was constantly thinking about veils. What was the final decision? You’ll find out soon enough!

Are you going to be a birdcage bride? Did you DIY or BuyIY?

I’m a birdcage bride. I bought the materials to make my own, but I haven’t attempted it just yet. I’ve found some affordable back-up options just in case this ends in disaster.

I loved my birdcage. Bought the veil from etsy and diy-ed the flower.

I made my birdcage veil myself! It took me about four attempts to get it right. It’s not as easy as it looks!

I bought from your third source down. In retrospect, I should have looked to etsy first. I did love my finished product though!

I’m more of the frame of mind that the look is going to be very attributable to this particular time in bridal fashion - in other words, as you said, dated. And… ::cough:: I hesitate to confess, but personally I actually think the birdcages look fairly silly. Just my opinion for my own purposes, though, all you birdcage brides should of course continue rocking on! :)

I originally sat out to do a birdcage like what you show there and went to Etsy to find one. I ended up going with a Blusher veil in blush pink because my dress is blush pink. I also thought that since my dress is light and flowy organza material that I needed something that went with the dress vs. the ones you picture above. I should get my veil any day now from the Etsy selller and can’t wait!

Maybe I’m weird, but I don’t get everyone’s fear of “dating” their photographs. Sure, you’re looking at doing some “trendy” things, but you are getting married now- in this time and place. When I look at my grandparents’ weddings I know for sure when they were married because of the fashions. They look very different from my parents’ wedding which was oh-so-70s.

I say, do and wear whatever moves you. Being happy with your wedding will make the best wedding pictures.

I love birdcage veils - it’s not my style (I could never pull it off) but I think they are SO gorgeous!

I’m a Birdcage Bride too! I actually just ordered my supplies yesterday so I am full DIY. Maybe amariem25 can share some tips and tricks?

I’m also a Birdcage Bride! I haven’t purchased one yet but I’m so on board. I knew I’d have a birdcage veil even before I got my dress. It was birdcage veil, or no veil at all!

I love that bird cages are anything from sassy to classic and everything in between. so many options!
I thought I would be a birdcage bride and make one myself, but decided against it last minute…just wasn’t sure I could pull it off!

I’m seriously conflicted about going with a birdcage or mantilla (or no veil at all and just a fascinator or flowers in my hair)! Mr. Peaches loves birdcage veils but I just don’t know if it’s the look I want or if I can pull one off.

Hey Miss Cheeseburger, thanks for featuring my photo of Rima first in this set. Do you mind adding the real source of the photo directly to my flickr stream?

I made mine! It IS a huge trend right now but it’s undeniably pretty. You can also opt for more of a hairpiece (kind of like your second to last picture) with a russian/french lace element if you don’t want to go for the full on birdcage veil. Go for it! It wasn’t a superhard thing to do and it’s so much less expensive to make it yourself! (The ladies at the dress shop where I got my dress were so impressed and a bride that was also in there with me said she’d bought a veil for $300!)

I bought mine! It’s a bandeau style one, and it was only $23 with shipping on etsy. I was going to make it, but I’m lame with DIY and my city has pretty crappy craft supplies. I would have had to buy all the items separately on ebay anyway, it probably would have been close to the same price and looked like crap.
