Mrs. Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

Reception Roundup

November 25th, 2009 @ 6:00 pm by Mrs. Pretzel

Before we were engaged, the reception and reception details were safe wedding topics for us to discuss. We threw around all sorts of ideas and had a lot of fun getting inspiration without diving into wedding research. Our list of “reception must haves”?

We. love. photo booths. I even initially suggested using one for our Save the Dates - but am pleased that we decided against it. The idea of our friends and family hamming it up in a photo booth had our toes tingling.

We wanted our reception to have an informal feel and be full of mingling. We thought that a section of lounge seating would help to create this vibe. Like Mrs Pineapple, we found the modern ambiance that lounge seating creates very tempting.

Cupcakes

Mr P has dubbed cupcakes “perfectly sized cake nirvana”. He has a thing for the bite-sized treats. When I mentioned that I don’t care for wedding cake he quickly said, “we should have cupcakes!” It sounds perfect to me—especially when I found out that cupcakes cost a fraction of the cost of wedding cake. SCORE!

We were pretty proud of ourselves. Being wedding novices these elements were, in our minds, completely groundbreaking and original. Imagine my surprise when I started to do a little wedding research and found that these three elements are quite “en vogue” in the wedding world.

Oh well. Mr P and I aren’t the type of people to change our minds about what we want because other people are doing it. Our excitement over these elements hasn’t been diminished by their popularity, either. As Mr P puts it—we have good taste. *grin*

What wedding element are you planning that seems to be a wedding “trend”?

I love the lounge setting - I am not going to do it b/c it was way more expensive than a hotel banquet reception but they are so beautiful and modern.
I am jealous!

I hear ya Pretzel - I thought I was soooo original . . . then saw everybody and their brother had already executed it. I think things seem much more over done on line, but I haven’t been to a wedding with any of the things you’ve mentioned. You’re guests are going to love it!

I really love candy buffets, not going to lie! I really want one but I feel like (because I’m seeing all the examples) it’s already been done SO much!

I love photo booths, but I actually haven’t yet been to a real wedding that uses them.

The whole “garden chic” concept was 100% me from my childhood up, and I was thrilled to find tons of wedding porn on this theme when we started planning the wedding. I’m a tad bummed that it’s now been so popular that it’s lame again and everyone’s sick of it, but you know, my group is not exactly wedding saturated so I doubt they’d know a wedding trend if it hit them in the face. I’m not worrying!

Oh, we’ve all got a trend or too in there. Those are great ones.

I like all of these ideas. It’s great to try and be original, but sometimes things are popular for a reason: because they are awesome!

We are incorporating the lounge seating at our venue. Its modern and they already have it setup normally, so we figured why not?
