I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. Ring… For Now?

November 25th, 2009 @ 1:38 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

So the budget for our wedding bands is pretty miniscule, as in, $350-$400 combined. We found one that will fit in that budget for Mr. Fro Yo, but we’re still searching for mine.

Here’s what I want:

And here’s what I can afford:

Both beautiful, but the first one is more my style. And really, what girl doesn’t like a little bling on her ring? So, I jokingly commented that maybe we should just get a ring for me that was a “for now” ring, and then we could upgrade, or swap it out for a different one when our budget was a little more forgiving. And as we thought about that, we didn’t think it was such a bad idea.

But just to be sure that I couldn’t find a ring in my budget, I started searching all the bargain places like eBay, Amazon, BlueNile, and Overstock. Surprisingly, Amazon had a large selection, but I don’t know that any of them was the one. So we’re still considering the ”for now” ring, but haven’t decided on what we should do yet.

What do you think about getting married with one ring and then trading it in for a new ring?

I think getting the “for now” ring is a good idea if it works for you. It’s not something I would personally do, though, because trading it in for something at a later date just loses the sentimental part of the ring for me.

We kinda said the same thing about my e-ring, but I’ve grown rather attached to it, and for me, I agree with Lillindy about the sentimentality of it.

Could you possibly get a “for now” ring that will turn into your “forever” ring? What I mean is, talk to your jeweler and maybe see if they can add diamonds to that ring later on. That’s what my jeweler is going to do, because I’m not too sure I want diamonds on my band (I’m weird, I know!).

Have you looked on Etsy? It might be a great place to get a “for now” ring. I’ve seen really thin, pretty bands in different metals on there, and some cool “hammered” looking rings.

Oh, I like jesstagirl’s idea of keeping the same band and “upgrading” it later. We intended to do that with the center stone on my e-ring, although now I’ve grown attached to that, as well, and might just keep it the same! At least it gives you the option of upgrading later if you decide you want to, but can keep the same band for sentimentality’s sake.

I have a “for now” ring. I know what I want, but its just not in the budget right now, so I found something comparable on overstock for $350. I’m hoping that once we’re settled and can save some money I’ll get my dream ring!

We’re having the same issue. I get what Lillindy is saying about the sentimentality of the actual wedding right though. I wonder if it would look funny to wear both the simple band and the blingy one? Aren’t they often called anniversary bands anyway?

Have you looked at iweddingband.com? I know a Bee previously posted about it but I can’t remember who, specifically. They have some good deals! But honestly, I like the idea of getting a for-now ring and upgrading to what you want later, rather than compromising now but spending enough to make it seem like a waste to upgrade (did that make sense?).

If you get a thin band now, you can stack a diamond ring like the one you posted on top of it later. That way you can keep both rings.

I say get a ring “for now” then get a ring you really want, i mean its something you are going to wear forever, just because you didn’t get it on your wedding day doesn’t mean it won’t mean any less. You could always do a ring blessing or renew your vows in the future with it. For us i felt i was going to wear my ring everyday forever, and maybe a centerpiece at the weddign i would love for “that day” but who else would care. so i was selfish and put a large budget in that area.
i think you can always make the “for now” ring sspecial in another way, maybe wear on your right hand after you get the ring you really want.

You might have some luck searching both Anniversary bands and stackable rings. I just got this ring from diamondharmony, who was offering free shipping, a giftcard, and I also got 20% off at checkout.

@Whodhavethought: Wow, that’s gorgeous and definitely in the budget!! Thanks for sharing!!
@annie360: This one is great too!! Apparently, I just don’t know the powers of the internet!
@Sage: I did look at iweddingband and didn’t find anything I wanted. They had a lot, but not one I loved in my budget.

@kimtim: That’s exactly what I was thinking, I could still wear it, it wouldn’t be one that I got rid of.

I like the idea of a “for now” ring. I just picked mine on Sunday, but I’m having a hard time not waffling about it already. My e-ring is perfect and I will never want another, but I’m seeing my band as something that I might upgrade eventually.

Also check Jared. We went in there first as sort of a joke because my FI is named Jared and I was seeing some pretty good prices.

While I really like my wedding band, I have to admit that I told Mr. Swan that I view it as a “for now” ring for me. I think it’s fine to want to get something new later down the line.

I say go for the “for now” ring. My engagement ring is more sentimental to me than my wedding band is likely to be. And you’re not tossing it, you’ll still have that band to have and to hold, you’ll just be wearing the one you wanted all along.

@Sage: I think it was Mrs. D’Orsay.
I think it’s fine to get a “for now” ring and upgrade later. Then again, you have to consider how attached you get to *things*… I don’t, really (not a terribly sentimental person) so Mr. Spaniel and I may upgrade *both* of our rings in the future!

Not a problem. That’s actually the band that I almost got. We saw it in the store first and loved it before we even saw the price!! In the end, we went with a similar and similarly priced band from the local jeweler when my engagement ring and his wedding band came from!

Good luck
