Natural Jewelry Cleaner

November 27th, 2009 @ 11:36 am by Mrs. Spaniel

For the first six months that I had my engagement ring, I didn’t clean it. Shocker! I know it’s a sacrilege to let such an important piece of jewelry get dirty, but I didn’t really know what to use to clean it that would be safe for the metal, the diamond, and the earth. I did eventually buy something, but it wasn’t terribly natural and I wasn’t particularly happy with it.

So, I just found Enviro-Rite Allergen-free Natural Jewelry CleanerNatural Jewelry Cleaner : wedding rings via Earth Friendly Weddings, and I’m planning to order it soon. I have high hopes! It’s made for people with allergies, asthma and “chemical sensitivities”, contains no hazardous ingredients, phosphates, petroleum distillates, chlorine, perfumes, dyes or animal by-products… so it’s perfect for semi-hippies like me and Mr. Spaniel.

:) Especially Mr. Spaniel. He didn’t even let me move my old jewelry cleaner into the new apartment. ;)

How do you clean your rings? Do you know of any other earth-friendly solutions?

I didn’t clean my ring for the first eight months. Potato Head brought it to the jeweler’s for me and they were obviously disgusted. They were like, “Uh, you can bring it in here whenever you want. You don’t have to wait EIGHT MONTHS.”

I clean mine with an old soft toothbrush and water and a lil’ soap. I’m weird, and it’s probably the totally worst way to clean it.

One of my bridesmaids gave me jewelry cleaner as a gift when we first got engaged. I love practical gifts so I thought it was great! The sad part… I’ve still only cleaned it twice!

My jeweler told me to just use dish soap!

A jeweler told me to use Simple Green - it’s an all (mostly?) natural cleaner without ammonia. FYI, most cleaning kits a jeweler will give your are ammonia with some soap and coloring in in. Super toxic.

I found that cleaning my ring with a little baby shampoo and hot water works the best. When I was using a chemical cleaner I felt that the white gold was yellowing a lot faster then it normally would. So I got it redipped and now I just use baby shampoo and it seems to work really well.

I have been using seltzer water and leaving it to soak overnight. I have a lot of nooks and crannies in the band of my ring and the bubbles help to lift the gook out.

I actually used to work in the industry and after they’re done putting your ring in the ultrasonic cleaners pretty much everyone uses a soft toothbrush to gently remove dirt, grime, and debris. Make sure you use an old one and be sure it is SOFT so as not to damage your setting. Any form of soap will leave your stones with a film and actually harms most gemstones (it just leaves diamonds with a dirty film). The BEST CHEMICAL FREE CLEANER for diamonds is actually vodka, believe it or not. Let your ring sit in a small amount for a bit then gently scrub and rinse. Voila! It will sparkle like new.

I just use dishsoap and warm water. I let my ring soak and then brush it with a baby toothbrush. I read about this technique from Martha and it works great.

Nice!! I’m horrible and I don’t clean my jewelry. I really need to get a cleaner, I just always forget. So now, my ring and necklace and others only get cleaned when they go for their 6 month checkups.

These were awesome suggestions–I found this page just by googling natural jewelry cleaners. I ended up getting a Connoisseurs jewelry cleaner. WOW. What a difference! I had forgotten how gorgeous my ring is completely cleaned and I’ve been engaged only since Nov 7th! LOL. Ring maintenance is definitely required!

I don’t have a natural solution, but I have a solution that can be created by household items. Mix half Mr. Clean and water with a small amount of ammonia. Soak in the ultrasonic or a bowl for 15 seconds then rinse with water and dry. I use this solution on all types of jewelry including opals, emeralds, and pearls and it works great. I learned this from a jewelry friend of mine. The full article about cleaning fine jewelry can be found here How to Clean Fine Jewelry

Its like you read my mind! You appear to grasp a lot approximately this, such as you wrote the guide in it or something. I believe that you just could do with a few percent to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, that is excellent blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.
