Fine China (Or Lack Thereof…)

November 28th, 2009 @ 4:55 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

Guess what arrived on our doorstep last night? A very exciting belated engagement present… our dinner plates!

While Mr Trail Mix and I decided not to register for a complete set of fine china, we did feel that a 6-piece set of plates would be a welcome addition to our mish-mash collection of plates, most of which are hand-me-downs from my grandmother. I actually really and truly love the way non-matching plates look in a table setting, so I was pretty sure that registering for an entire set of china would be unnecessary.

But we did want to be able to have at least one nice set of plates for all the fabulous dinner parties we host. (Note: that was sarcasm regarding dinner parties; our studio apartment does not allow us to host dinner parties. But hopefully we will someday.) So, we picked out some beautiful, Portuguese-inspired plates from Williams Sonoma.

I was a little disappointed initially because when we got home after registering, we realized the plates weren’t available online and I really didn’t know if anyone would end up getting them for us. Luckily, one of Mr Trail Mix’s groomsmen’s parents (Holla, Mr and Mrs R!) came through and now we have our lovely blue-and-yellow plates. Ha, yellow and blue… notice a theme here?

Love WS gift wrapping! I have so many of those little pineapple things stored in my craft drawer, waiting for inspiration to strike…

One more, just for good measure. Oh and by the way, these things are huge! Way bigger than the rest of our plates…

Did you (or are you going to) register for china? I’m interested to know, as we still have time to add china if we want to…

Beautiful! We’re not registering for china because my parents bought my china when I was a baby. The only sort-of problem is that the china was hand-made in East Germany before the wall came down, and apparently it’s a virtual sin to eat on them. (Factory destroyed, all that jazz). I doubt we’ll ever use china if we do register for it, so yeah. :p No (extra) china for us.

What cute plates! We are not registering for china, our kitchen is already stuffed to the brim and I think they’d just end up as extra clutter.

We registered for china! We weren’t going to at first, but my mom convinced us to. She never registered for china when she got married and always regretted it. No, we don’t use it often, but when we have people over for dinner, or host a holiday meal, it’s definitely nice to have. We truly love it, and people LOVED getting it for us. They were the first gifts to go from the registry :)

Those plates are awesome! We didn’t end up registering for china, but instead for nice (read: non-Walmart) everyday dishes. We haven’t gotten much of anything yet, but I’m standing by the decision. On my side alone, there are 5 sets of china I may end up inheriting and it seemed a bit silly to introduce another. My mother was a bit upset at first and tried to convince me otherwise, but once she realized just how many sets there were in the family, she agrees.

Those are so pretty! We are registering for china, which we’ll be using whenever we have any company at all. :) Apparently bone china is incredibly durable, so it will probably outlast our ceramic casual dishes anyway.

I wanted to register for china, but we are apparently going to inherit my fiance’s family china. It’s not really my style, but since it’s a family heirloom, I guess we’re going to use it! I love the pattern you chose!

We registered for china and I got 8 place settings. I plan adding matching serving pieces in the next few years. I plan on using it when we entertain and even when it is just me and the hubs and I feel like making are dinner a little more special. =) I really want a china hutch so I can display it but that is going to have to wait until we get a bigger place…

We aren’t registering for fine china because we don’t really have a use for it. I will probably buy some for my 25th anniversary or something… when we start hosting holidays for our family.

Also, those plates are so crazy breakable– I’d feel terrible chipping or breaking bone china! lol

That’s so pretty! I definitely don’t think you have to get fine china unless you know you’ll use it - no big deal!

We registered for china and got 4 place settings. We just used it on Thanksgiving. We love it! It looks so nice and beautiful. Almost too beautiful to eat off of.

I know that most people will rarely use china, but I’m still glad we got some. It’s just something special that you will get and possibly be able to pass down to your kids someday. I just felt like nothing else we registered for had any special meaning, so it was nice to choose china together and know that it would be used on many special occasions in our future life together.

I’m not a china fan - give me paper plates! My grandmother used to be so picky about her china … it had flowers in it that all had to be the same way, and they had to be right in the middle of the placemat, etc. I think that’s what turned me off of China.
That said - your set is really beautiful!

We didn’t register - we use one grandmother’s china as our everyday plates (it’s very simple) and the other grandmother’s china as our fancy plates. Gotta love hand-me-downs.

Those are beautiful!

We registered for Fiestaware for everyday/casual entertaining dishes. We LOVE to entertain but like you, really don’t have the space for more than 2 other guests right now. I inherited my Grandmother’s china which is timeless (bone white with absolutely no embellishments) but will most likely stay in boxes until we purchase a larger place. For now the colorful Fiestaware will do for us.

I’m inheriting so many sets of china, I don’t know what to do with them. At least 4 sets just on my side, and who knows how many on Mr. KMs. And I’m such a sap, I’ll never be able to get rid of any of them! My mom’s is the best, though.

We didn’t register for china, just everyday dishes. We really didn’t think it would be something we’d want/need/use and we don’t regret the decision.

I registered for China and got almost all of it. It was a Mikasa set so not to pricey. I also have my grandmother’s china but it’s only from the 70’s and not that old. Also she never had serving pieces.

I did not register for china because my Great-Grandmother painted over 20 sets and a dozen of those are still in our family. My mom allowed me to chose 1 set that I wanted to recieve as a “wedding gift” and we will dole out the rest as family members pass on, grow up, etc. So, I now have service for 18, including two serving platters, two bowls, salt and pepper shakers, etc. It weighs a ton! I did register for nice, new china storage bags so I could keep everything safe!
