About Mrs. Lamb

Bee-A-Ewe-tiful, Take Two

November 29th, 2009 @ 1:30 pm by Mrs. Lamb

I confided in the hive a few weeks ago that I was having second thoughts about the translation of my wedding hair/makeup from inspiration to execution. I had only given my stylist one photo to work with and then just went with whatever suggestion she had in the moment. The photo I had was torn out of a wedding magazine months ago and looks a little like this:

I’m not sure what I thought it had to do with my theme (vintage) or season (winter)… but I got a dewy makeup job with pink lips and a half up do that I felt like I do myself for fancy occasions. All because I’m not good at saying that I don’t like things. I took courage from all of you bees and decided to try again.

I made another appointment and this time sent ahead several inspiration photos. I also had them available at the appointment. Here’s what I brought:

I knew what I wanted and I was going to ask precisely for the look: Hair all down and focus on red lips (similar to Miss Hamster’s inspiration). We did the hair before the makeup, so ignore my monochromatic pastiness for the first few shots!

I wanted to try on both of my veils (cathedral length for the ceremony and birdcage for the reception) to make sure having all of my hair down worked with both.

Making the birdcage veil was completely an impromptu venture on my part. I had some leftover tulle from the cathedral length veil laying about and I just started to play with it. I was twisting it around my fingers as I talked on the phone and then it just sort of started taking a birdcage type shape. More on this process to come!

I’m glad I remembered to wear a button down shirt. It’s just like me to forget and wear and turtleneck. For the wedding day, I was gifted a beautiful silk robe from my dear friend Hannah that I plan on wearing.

I’m going to add some layers to my hair at my last trim before the wedding so that it’s not SO. STRAIGHT. ACROSS. Seriously, that straight line is like a wedding day ruler.

There we go! A smile! I liked this look a lot better.

A more serious face so you can see the lip color a little bit more.

Luckily, friends of mine threw a small shower/bachelorette for me that night so I could test the hair and makeup in real life. I got my dance on and was out until way past my bedtime. As we were leaving downtown, my friends were amazed at how well my hair held up. It was a pain to comb out the next day, but I was really pleased that the curls didn’t fall. To keep my pouty red lips fresh, I’m going to purchase a tube of this particular color to keep in my clutch (which I just finished sewing and can’t wait to show you!).

Did you have to do a second hair/makeup trial? Did you test your wedding day look for longevity?

Haha, wedding day ruler! I love the lip color on you.

My friend and one of my sisters are hair stylists as well as me, so I’ll be covered for the big day. I hope to do a trial run just once! I’ll also be doing my own makeup so no trial needed. Easy peasy.

I love the red lips! I agree about getting layers in your hair, and I’d also suggest adding some dark eyeliner and falsies for a more dramatic, vintage looking eye. You’re going to look beautiful! By the way, great job on the birdcage veil!!

I like the darker lip color and agree w/ Mrs. Mouse that you need darker eyeliner and falsies to complete that retro look.

Btw, I have that hairstyle bookmarked too. I loved the way they had it before up and then half up and down by letting the longer part down.

Very cute fascinator also! You look glam-gorgeous!

I love your look! And give you major props for going back and asking for what you want. I just did a first run of my wedding day hair (way far in advance) and remembered your post. You inspired me to say “Actually, I really want my bangs to go this way… and my curls to…” etc. We didn’t get the look exactly right the first time, but I feel very comfortable with my stylist now because I said what I wanted and I saw how accepting she was of that direction.

I think it looks great in the end! But, I agree with Mrs. Mouse about adding the layers, I think it will make the style look much more like the inspiration, as would a tad more eyeliner. I also think it would be nice if there was just a touch more volume at the roots (like the 2nd and 3rd inspiration pictures) to give it a little more of the va-va-voom look. Maybe they can set your hair in hot rollers/velcro rollers before they curl it so you get a little more of that volume. Can’t wait to see it all put together for your wedding! :)

Very pretty! Layers are a great idea. I think the “pin-up” look is very popular for weddings these days-it’s the precise look I went for! My makeup artist & hair stylist did wonders.

PS: I would go even darker/redder with the lipstick if you dare. Mine looked garish at trials, but it completed the look once I had my whole wedding ensemble on.

The look is gorgeous. I recommend getting layers and maybe even some highlights to get some dimension. Highlights will really make the hair styling stand out!

Eileen Marie: I love your look! I’m also doing red lips at my wedding - thanks for the tip to go redder.

Miss Lamb: I agree with Lillindy that some volume at the roots would really add some pumped-up glamour to your look.

I like the look. It looks very glamorous. I’m glad that you found the look that you wanted. I’m worried that my trial won’t work out the way I want either.

Thanks ladies! Your input is invaluable. I’m gathering some more input from the Lambaids as well. I think my trials are not yet over, but I have a much clearer direction!

I’m glad to hear that your curls held up well through your partying, I think I was most concerned that all my pins were going to fall out at the reception and wished I had done a more rough trial on the actual hair-do!

You look great, lambster! I am inspired–I want to do multiple hair/makeup trials, too! I just don’t want to be surprised on the morning of my wedding day… : )
