A Sweet Favor - Part 1

November 30th, 2009 @ 4:06 pm by Mrs. Dew Drop

Don’t tell my mom I admitted this, but I totally have a habit of biting off waaaay more than I can chew.

And this is how I found myself knee-deep in a food favor making project less than a week before our  wedding.

Honestly, I don’t think I ever considered not having homemade sweets as favors. It was the one thing I was never indecisive about. Okay, maybe that’s not so surprising. I did fall in love with sweets (both making them and eating them) years before I fell in love with Mr. DD. And falling out of love with them would be quite similar to falling out of love with him—just not possible. What better way to share this love of mine with our guests than through our favors?

So, homemade sweet favors it was. But that didn’t solve the problem of what exactly to make. Yes, you guessed it; here’s where my indecision took over again.

The first thing I thought of making were these homemade marshmallow peeps (and it looks like Miss Parfait thought about this, too!):

(Source: Twig & Thistle)

Adorable, right? But I was worried that marshmallows covered in sugar wouldn’t hold up very well if made and packaged in advance. I’m not sure this was grounded in reality at all, but I couldn’t get the thought out of my head. So I moved on.

Then I saw these on one of my favorite baking blogs:

A Sweet Favor - Part 1 : wedding favors Ricekr rice+kr

(Source: Joy the Baker)

Rice Krispies treats topped with peanut butter and chocolate fudge? How could you go wrong?? But they were too sweet (even for me!) and my squares did not come at looking quite as, um, square-like as the ones in the picture. And no one really wants to eat Rice Krispies treat and fudge dust, do they? Or maybe I have just invented the candy sensation of the future?? You heard it here first, people! Yeah, okay, so the dust thing wasn’t quite working. I kept looking.

I thought something simple like these chocolate-covered pretzels might be a good idea:

(Source: Style Me Pretty)

And that’s when I found out Mr. DD does not like chocolate-covered pretzels AT ALL. Clearly this was a sign that I should eat all the chocolate-covered pretzels in the house and stop aiming for simple. Phew. My mouth full of crumbs, I went back to making things more difficult, as usual.

So, I borrowed an idea from Mrs. Latte and made a test batch of these cupcake pops:

A Sweet Favor - Part 1 : wedding favors Cupcake011 cupcake01

(Source: Mrs. Latte - recipe via Bakerella)

It’s actually not that the pops are really difficult to make. They’re just really time-consuming. You have to wait for things to cool and chill at almost every step. Well, okay, things might have gone faster if I had more freezer space. But then where would I keep all the ice cream?? Obviously the pops and I weren’t getting along, so, again, it was back to the drawing board.

I was starting to run out of interesting ideas. Brownies? Fudge? They just seemed too easy. And I had already decided to throw simplicity out the window.

So I started to look for packaging ideas instead. Clearly when I found the perfect container, I would figure out what to put in it…

How did you pick out your favors? Was it an easy process or were you indecisive, like I was?

You could always make chocolate boxes! My mom’s cousin does all of the favors for family weddings as her gift, and she has made a ton of these (I’m going with the chocolate-covered pretzels… Mr. Library LOVES them!). Check out this website and a ton of others through Google: http://www.onestopcandle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?page=OSC/CTGY/CMBX

I love the initiative! I think homemade favors are so special! I’m sure whatever you choose will be wonderful!

My initial first wedding favor urge was to go for homemade vanilla! It’s super easy as you just split open a few vanilla beans and dump them in vodka, but it seems like the materials might be a tad too expensive. I’m still thinking about it!

I’m making gingerbread men for ours, for several reasons. They are kind of sentimental to us - fi brought me one on our first picnic date and his grandmother (who has passed on) used to make them for him when he was little, bc they have always been his favourite. They can be made a week in advance. You can invite all your friends over to have a decorating party. And you can write the names of guests on them and they double as place cards :)

Your posts always make me laugh because they remind me of myself and think if I ran into you in SF that I’d instantly like you. My guy (and my parents) is always telling me to not to have a spaz by overcomplicate things. I listen intently for about five seconds and then go back to my regularly scheduled programming.

Oh, and I’d happily eat anything you posted on this page and am wondering if I should make a 3 pm afternoon snack run.

I’m in the same boat as you- trying to figure out what to make. My current ideas are fudge cake tower things (from the DIY Bride book) or caramel apples or the pretzel rods. I just made a practice round where I dipped pretzels in chocolate and then in Butterfinger or Heath Bar crumbs. How could your FI not like that? :) I might have to try the rice krispie treats idea out though- it looks amazing!

Yummy favor choices! I wanted to bake our favors, but I was convinced that I’d be too stressed out leading up to the wedding.

I think we are going with black and white cookies to go along with our theme, but I am seriously concerned about the time factor leading up to the wedding day. Luckily, my FI has volunteered to bake and recruit his mom to help!

Mmmm… I’m going to make the chocolate fudge rice krispies sometime very soon! Yum!!

I go back & forth ALL the time on favors. We’re going edible too– just don’t know what we’re giving out. Some days I want cookies, the next I want chocolate, the next I want a popcorn buffet, etc, etc. I know I’ll end up making a decision a week before the wedding lol
