Don’t tell my mom I admitted this, but I totally have a habit of biting off waaaay more than I can chew.
And this is how I found myself knee-deep in a food favor making project less than a week before our wedding.
Honestly, I don’t think I ever considered not having homemade sweets as favors. It was the one thing I was never indecisive about. Okay, maybe that’s not so surprising. I did fall in love with sweets (both making them and eating them) years before I fell in love with Mr. DD. And falling out of love with them would be quite similar to falling out of love with him—just not possible. What better way to share this love of mine with our guests than through our favors?
So, homemade sweet favors it was. But that didn’t solve the problem of what exactly to make. Yes, you guessed it; here’s where my indecision took over again.
The first thing I thought of making were these homemade marshmallow peeps (and it looks like Miss Parfait thought about this, too!):

Adorable, right? But I was worried that marshmallows covered in sugar wouldn’t hold up very well if made and packaged in advance. I’m not sure this was grounded in reality at all, but I couldn’t get the thought out of my head. So I moved on.
Then I saw these on one of my favorite baking blogs:

Rice Krispies treats topped with peanut butter and chocolate fudge? How could you go wrong?? But they were too sweet (even for me!) and my squares did not come at looking quite as, um, square-like as the ones in the picture. And no one really wants to eat Rice Krispies treat and fudge dust, do they? Or maybe I have just invented the candy sensation of the future?? You heard it here first, people! Yeah, okay, so the dust thing wasn’t quite working. I kept looking.
I thought something simple like these chocolate-covered pretzels might be a good idea:

And that’s when I found out Mr. DD does not like chocolate-covered pretzels AT ALL. Clearly this was a sign that I should eat all the chocolate-covered pretzels in the house and stop aiming for simple. Phew. My mouth full of crumbs, I went back to making things more difficult, as usual.
So, I borrowed an idea from Mrs. Latte and made a test batch of these cupcake pops:

It’s actually not that the pops are really difficult to make. They’re just really time-consuming. You have to wait for things to cool and chill at almost every step. Well, okay, things might have gone faster if I had more freezer space. But then where would I keep all the ice cream?? Obviously the pops and I weren’t getting along, so, again, it was back to the drawing board.
I was starting to run out of interesting ideas. Brownies? Fudge? They just seemed too easy. And I had already decided to throw simplicity out the window.
So I started to look for packaging ideas instead. Clearly when I found the perfect container, I would figure out what to put in it…
How did you pick out your favors? Was it an easy process or were you indecisive, like I was?
