DIY Flowers For the Budget Bride

November 30th, 2009 @ 3:04 pm by Mrs. Cola

So. Let’s talk flowers.

I don’t really like them.

Yup, I said it. I have a black thumb; I can’t grow a flower or plant to save my life. Every Valentine’s Day and birthday, I tell Mr. Cola that I don’t want flowers, they only make me sneeze, and plus, they die. Why waste money on something that’s gonna die? But every year, I get them (he thinks he needs to CYA, just in case, I guess).

So when it came time to think about how we were going to decorate for our wedding, what did I first think of? That’s right, stupid flowers! I really want a big pretty flower covered arch, pretty centerpieces and a beautiful bouquet. It’s very unlike me, but that’s what I’ve always envisioned for our wedding, so that’s what we’ll be doing (with a double dose of Advil Allergy Sinus!).

But these dang pretty things are so freakin’ expensive! So, I had the brilliant idea that my mom, aunt and I would do them ourselves. Crazy? Maybe. We shall see…

My aunt used to teach floral design classes at a local community college, and my mom has for years made beautiful silk flower arrangements as gifts and to decorate our home, so I’m hoping we’re making the right decision.

After deciding we’d do our own flowers, my mom and aunt went to the San Francisco Flower Mart to see what was available and to price out some flowers. Here are some pretty pictures of what they found (all photos taken by my mom). It’s a great place to shop if you’re in the Bay Area, but you have to go there early!

Purple hydrangeas:

Lavender roses - not in very good shape:

Statice:

Mini cala lilies with purple centers:

Lisianthus:

At this shop they bought orchids (Thai dendrobium) at $10 for 10 stems, green hydrangea at $12 for 5 stems and red ti leaves, at $4 for 10 leaves:

After my mom and aunt went to the Flower Mart, they’ve estimated we’ll spend about $1200 on 21 cocktail table sized arrangements, 7 short table arrangements, 9 tall table arrangements, cake topper flowers, large floral spray for the arch, about 100 flowers for the cupcake stand, 8 back of ceremony chair arrangements, 2 bride bouquets, 3 bridesmaids’ bouquets, 7 boutonnieres, 2 corsages, plus a ton of petals for scattering. That figure includes all supplies needed to make these, vases, tape, oasis foam, etc.

Not too shabby, in my opinion, considering TheKnot.com says you’re supposed to spend about 8% of the total wedding budget on flowers. Um, I don’t think so! There are so many other things I can think of to spend that kind of money on! So, thank goodness my family is willing to help. While I was away camping for a weekend, my mom made some sample mock ups of the cocktail table and short arrangements I’d photoshopped:

(One dendrobium orchid, one small green leaf from hydrangea or the yard, a few rocks and 3″ vase from Dollar Tree. Photo taken by my mom)

(Hydrangeas, orchids and leaves, with lemon slides. It will really be more purple than green hydrangeas, and lime slices in the real versions, to tie in the green in our color scheme, but she only had lemons on hand. This photo was also taken by my mom.)

The small arrangement in the first photo above will be used on all the cocktail tables on the lawn and in the bar, as well as on every other table inside (we have extra tables inside for quieter seating), and there will also be three in the women’s bathroom. The second arrangement above will be on half the dining tables, and there will be two on the head table. We haven’t ordered the tall 22″ vases yet for the tall arrangements, but I’m sure she’ll be mocking those up soon.

So what do you think? Do you think we can pull it off? Who else has done or is having their family or friends do ALL their flowers, using real flowers, 2 days before the wedding?

You’re speaking my language Cola; my mom and grandma are doing my flowers for our July wedding. Only I only have Costco and IGA grocery to work from…

I think it can be done! (Hopefully, right? RIGHT?)

I love the flowers with fruit, I wanted to do that same idea till my florist told me that when you have sliced fruit your flowers wilt faster because of the acid. Did you notice that?

@ hugrad, the secret to using fruit in the vases is you have to have a second, smaller vase inside the outer vase, with the fruit sandwiched in between. Then the water that the flowers are in is safe from the acidic juices. In this mock up my mom just used a clear plastic cup to protect the flower stems, but we’ll have 6 inch outer vases and about 5 inch inner vases when we do the real arrangements. And I’ll be sure to take lots of pics when we do the real thing, for anyone else out there thinking of tackling their own flowers!

I think it can be done, as long as you don’t get too attached to a certain flower or color. You really will have no way of knowing what is going to be available the day you need them. However, I think the limes will look great and I’m sure they’ll be able to find some type of purple flowers to go in the arrangement.

SF flower mart is awesome. We went there for my sister’s wedding and the flowers were gorgeous. I think they will look great.

@Miss Cola:
Great tip about the plastic cup!

I am definitely planning on doing our own bouquets & centerpieces although I’m not 100% attached to floral centerpieces yet.
I think it is completely doable. I did a mock up over the summer where I purchased the flowers from the wholesaler I plan to purchase them from. Made them and introduced the flowers to the conditions that I expect them to be in for our actual wedding. ie making them, putting them in a empty fridge for x days, leave them out in the heat all day. And I was extremely happy with the quality of the flowers I got.
With going for the wholesaler I know my flowers are in season and I plan to call them weeks ahead of time to make sure they have those flowers and let them know that I intend to purchase this much. That way the flowers can be as fresh as possible.

Very nice, and of course clever. I think when we work within our means, and have others help it makes the whole wedding project fun, personal, and of course memorable. I am planning to do all my flowers on my own. My FI knew how i get all stressed about money so he said lets keep it nice and simple. So he wants to use his roses from his garden, and make my bridal banuet, he also does not want to wear flowers, nice and simple he said. i love this man. He suggested that we get vases from IKEA, ROSS,Marshalls, or any store that sells them cheap ($1-$5) , add water, and he will put his roses (in petal form) in with a candle. I will go buy some beautiful vases today $6 at Fresh and Easy (made in USA, not cheap looking), we will have about 10 of these for 10 tables. I am so happy. Trader Joes also has really fresh beautiful flowers. Oh, I thought I had to have all the same vases, but my LOVE, said why. Be natural and everything will look great. He is so right. It is hard to find all ten vases that are cheap and of good quality. Usually on sale items do not carry all that you need. Just stay with you theme, and just mix and match.

I’m TOTALLY going to do the DIY route. Even though I live in an apartment, I have a crafting room. So we’ll just throw plastic down and have at it!

You can do it girl!
I came to the same conclusions about flowers and ordered all of mine online from wholesalers (no market available). A great big group of family friends got together the night before the wedding to put together probably 40 arrangements - all while having a blast! I elected to arrange the bouquets/bouts/corsages with my bridesmaids at the same time after receiving and prepping it all that wednesday.
Everything looked fabulous, we saved a ton of money and best of all had a lot of fun doing it - you can too with a talented mom like that :)

We DIY weddings for some friends, and it always managed to work out.

It looks like your flower arrangements are going to look wonderful! :)

Beautiful! I encourage diy brides to seek out local growers as well to support the local economy since so many flowers are grown overseas. They will be in much better shape when you can go to the farm and cut them or pick them up right after they are cut. It’s a much “greener” alternative as well.

I have a stake in this game, though. I’m a flower grower myself, so I might be a tinge biased. :-)
