Here at the hive, bees (like Mrs. Joey, and Miss Lamb) have been buzzing about Craigslist. Until recently, I was a Craigslist virgin. I had never even been to the site! Come to think of it, although I’ve certainly explored sites such as eBay, I’ve never actually bought anything from these online sources! I guess I’m just a little bit weirded out by used stuff….the snob in me says, “well, if it’s not good enough for you, it’s certainly not good enough for me!” (My, how far I’ve come from my Polish-Communist-food stamp childhood.)
Anyway, after all of the wonderful and cheap things that the bees have found on Craigslist, I decided to just take a look and see what was available in my area. And, can you believe it, I found something that I loved. I found something that I loved, and it cost peanuts!
Now, usually, when I find something I love, I hmmmm and huhhhh, and ask Sister Pudding what she thinks (she usually loves it), and ask Mama Pudding what she thinks (she usually hates it), and by the time I actually decide that I must have it, it’s no longer available. This is exactly what happened to the beautiful and cheap candlesticks.
But this time, I did something very out of character. I immediately emailed the seller, who wrote me back with a phone number.

… About wedding dresses! Yup, it’s time to talk about the dress.
First and foremost, my dress is not pictured in this post. Awwwww, you’re disappointed? Understandable and I promise to show it soon but I want to get a picture of me in the dress after it’s been fitted so you’re just gonna have to sit tight and look at how my decision-process unfolded. And drool over pretty dresses. Hey, it’s a tough job but someone’s gotta do it…
The dress was high on my list of priorities after I got engaged. In fact, the saleswoman at Saks, where I went to first try on some dresses, told me dead serious-like that the dress was the focal point around which the entire wedding should revolve… interesting, very interesting.
When I first started looking at dresses, mostly in the pages of the bridal mags I bought obsessively, I was honestly a bit put off by the majority of them. Not that they weren’t pretty but they were definitely not what I was looking for. I’m pretty short (5’3″ on a good day) and I knew we wanted an outdoor wedding, so a big, poufy ball gown was out of the question. I initially decided I wanted to go super-simple for my dress, no lace or beads or any type of embellishment, country-chic, if you will…
Here’s the first dress that really stopped me in my tracks while looking through magazines…

Lambster and I were watching football on Thanksgiving day (a tradition right up there with eating turkey) when he turned to me during the commercials and said, “I don’t understand why anyone would go shopping on Black Friday.”
I fell off the couch, died a thousand deaths, revived myself and ask him if he were serious.
“Yeah, I mean, it doesn’t seem like they’re having that good of sales. And it’s crowded.”
I fell off the couch again. I was out cold for a few minutes. This. This was. This was blasphemy!!! If my parents taught me anything, it was that Black Friday is pure magic. You eat turkey, you watch football, you watch Miracle on 34th Street, then you go to bed early so that you can get up with the alarm and get some door-buster action!
Growing up, I’d wait for my parents to come home from their early outing, anxious to see if I could catch peeks at potential presents. They typically completed the vast majority of their Christmas shopping this way.
Inspired by Mrs. Cherry Pie, we also penned our own ceremony. We used a similar structure to hers, but infused our own words and added a couple of songs from our family members. Overall, the whole ceremony (songs and all) took about 30 minutes, which was perfect—just long enough to feel the transformation, harvest a few tears from our guests’ eyes, and not feel like the center of attention for too long.
Our officiant, my uncle Howard, started with words of welcome to our guests.

I was really nervous about planning a trip for 26 people. Booking a trip for myself was never a problem because it was my money I was spending. But when it comes to spending other people’s money, I get uneasy, which is why I could never be an interior decorator or stock broker.
Mr. N and I had talked to a travel agent that claimed they specialized in destination weddings, but we could immediately tell that they were full of it. Very discouraging.

My new toy!

Out of all the wedding/crafting things I could have bought (and would still love to)—like the Cricut, Cuttlebug or Gocco—I think this was a better investment. And considering that my old printer that I did our STDs on is about 12 years old, I was in desperate need for an upgrade.
I bought the Epson R1900 Large Format Photo Printer from Amazon, after doing a ton of research on CNET, my favorite site for electronics reviews. Here’s the capabilities I’ll get to use (from Amazon):

Swarovski “Crystalline” Toasting Flutes, Pair $390 at Macy’s
I know it’s really a ridiculous, luxurious waste (I don’t know how much money we would have to have before I wouldn’t feel that way), but how great are these toasting flutes? I don’t think I even know a champagne special enough to drink out of these… but I hope to someday.
Now these are a lot more reasonable toasting flutes, even if they’re not quite so “fancy”:
Late last week, I sprained my ankle pretty badly. I had X-rays taken, and it wasn’t broken, but as everyone has told me since then, “you know… sprains hurt worse than a break.” Um… this I know. So, last weekend I wasn’t really able to go anywhere. Not even to the Bucks game with Mr. French Fries like we had planned (where he saw Michael freaking Jordan). So, I had a lot of time on my hands… and I’m happy to report that I put it to good use! I finally finished our church pew pomanders — all 16 of them.
If you’ll recall, I did some calculations and figured out that I needed 8 pomanders on a side, if I skip every other pew (there are 15 pews on each side of the aisle). Perhaps an illustration of this would work a bit better?

It’s okay if you’re jealous of my awesome MS Paint skills. Right.

I have talked about the crazy reasons for not wanting to reveal the identity of my dress on the world wide web. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t write about our dress buying adventures, does it? Oh, and just to make it fun, I will be posting random pictures of me in dresses that I didn’t buy throughout this post.

If you think you’d be a great addition to the hive, check out our guidelines, as well as the bees’ advice for blogging, and submit your application to wannabee (at) weddingbee (dot) com.
Thanks for sticking with me so far - it’s about to pay off!
So, after almost deciding on a dress, then hesitating, then backing out completely, I was empty-handed. What did I do? I went back to the beginning: The Knot’s Wedding Dress Search Tool. I saw a lot of dresses I had liked from the get go, but then I started coming across a brand of dresses that I had never heard of. Wtoo Brides?
I kept seeing their dresses. They were really cute and in the “$$” price range, so I typed it into Google, and this is where I ended up:
