Or anywhere in France, for that matter!). I’m a full-time worker, part-time student, soon-to-be-step-mom, indie music lovin’, architecture and design fanatic, macaroni and cheese addict, vegetarian, Francophile, Ohio State football obsessed, wedding planning girl. I plan on DIYing my little heart out (or as much as a suitcase to Jamaica will hold).

Ya Mon! Let’s Trash That Dress*! (Pt. 1)

November 12th, 2009 @ 10:26 am by Mrs. Quiche

Okay, maybe not THAT dress, but a white dress, nonetheless! I couldn’t bear the thought of trashing my actual wedding dress, so I ended up finding this VS maxi dress on eBay for $30! My mom and I dressed it up a bit by adding a loooong white ribbon to tie in the back, but that’s about it. It didn’t really need much for us to just trash it!

I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.

A Rose by Any Other Name…

November 12th, 2009 @ 8:26 am by Mrs. Pudding

The changing of the last name is something that most brides-to-be spend a lot of time debating. Should I take his? Should I hyphenate? Should I just keep my own? Coming from a Polish family that I like to refer to as “hardcore traditional”, some conventions are not to be messed with. One of those traditions is the name change; even if I decided to keep my maiden name, my stubborn grandmother would still refer to me by my husband’s surname. Why fight city hall? Also, I like the symbolism of sharing a name with my husband. To me, it represents the coming together of a new family unit (although I agree that you do not necessarily need to take the man’s name for this to happen - he could just as easily take yours). Also, as a teacher, I hate the fact that sometimes a mother and child do not share the same last name. I know that this is a pet peeve based purely on my laziness, but looking up the proper name of the mother is a pain!

Nevertheless, to me, the process of changing my name is particularly bittersweet. This is in large part due to my quite complicated and impossible to pronounce first name. You see, my name is a very, very popular name in Poland. In 2004, the name was the 5th most popular baby girl name in Poland. My name is the equivalent of a Jessica, Jennifer, or Amanda in Poland. My name is hard to pronounce and impossible to spell. Somehow, the “z” in the middle always throws people off. Nevertheless, it is a very pretty name, and once people get past the shock, most of them love it.

When I came to Canada in 1992, I didn’t speak a word of English.

Mrs. Peep Toe's Picture
Mrs. Peep Toe, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, Policy Analyst Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Olive Oil Production Manager Engagement Date: December 16, 2007 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Blogging Since: November 26, 2008 Venue: Hotel Vitale About Me: I am a west coast lady who loves the San Francisco Bay Area. I love living with Mr. Peep and our animals: Huck the Dog and Ferris the Cat. I work to save the environment in San Francisco, while Mr. Peep makes ridiculously delicious Olive Oil. On any day you can find me reading the latest book I have gotten my hands on, eating Swedish Fish, and perusing wedding blogs! We are both champagne drinking foodies on a Bud Light budget. We are planning an eco-chic, intimate, and interfaith San Francisco City wedding.
About Mrs. Peep Toe

I was never planning on doing this post. It seemed less evasive to show you a picture of Mr. Peep in bed the day after our wedding than showing you the nitty-gritty details of our budget.

BUT a few weeks ago, Mama Peep commented that every penny spent on our wedding seemed well spent. So maybe this post is an ode to our good work—the hours and hours of hunting for the best vendors and feeling like we really did spend “our” money well. I say “our” money, because most of it really was a no-strings-attached gift from our beyond-generous parents.

That said, here is a rough estimate of all the gory details.

Budget: Originally I wanted to keep it under $20K, but then we got an unexpected boost from our in-laws. So our overall goal was $25K.

Venue, rentals and reception budget: 50%, or $10K.
Actual: ~$11,000
Venue: $1,000

Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.

And Then We Did Keg Stands

November 11th, 2009 @ 6:20 pm by Ms Potato Chips

Remember when spring break used to involve beads and Jell-O shots? And it wasn’t “spring break”—it was SPRINGBREAKWOOHOOOO!!? Remember that?

Last March Mr. Potato Head and I, by virtue of our teacher/student lifestyle, shared the same week of SPRINGBREAKWOOHOOOO!! Our big plans, however, included neither a beer funnel nor a suspicious man with a video camera and questionable release forms.

Instead, we made our first appointment to meet with wedding photographers. We planned on enjoying a relaxing brunch at our favorite diner and a leisurely drive up to New Hampshire to meet with the husband-wife duo at Hinkley Photo. Instead, we woke up to a flooded basement. Potato Head ran around with mops and buckets while I yelled a lot and tried to rescue as many shoes as possible.

Let’s recap:

Spring Break 99 = sunshine, ocean, party bus to Miami

Spring Break 2009 = drizzly 40-degree weather, waking up to a flooded basement, road trip to New Hampshire. My thirties. They are a-comin’.

Luckily, the day was saved by a successful meeting, when we finally got there several hours later.

Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, Dallas Age and Occupation: 28, Special Projects Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity Trader Engagement Date: March 19, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Marie Gabrielle, Dallas About Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.
About Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

OK, you all convinced me about the assigning of tables. So I’m going to do it. I am a major planner, and I agreed that although I will be stressed creating the name cards and assigning tables so close to the wedding, I will be even more stressed if people are running around trying to find a place to sit. Well, luckily I came across the cutest name card holders from Good Guest on Etsy.

Biting the Bullet and Assigning Tables : wedding placecards stationery 1 name card holder

I think they are so sweet, and people can take them home and use them to hold pictures later if they want to.

However, I decided that instead of spending $19 for 12 of them, I am going to attempt to make them.

I'm ready to take on the world with a big heart and a big smile! I love all things crafty and DIY. I live in Cheyenne, WY with Mr. HD and our 2 fur babies, our dachshunds, Ollie and Mia. I love travel, adventure, Finding Nemo, '90s music, animals, and laughing. He is the cheese to my macaroni and together we spend more time watching movies than we probably should! I'm an old soul who is super duper excited to pull off our down home-rustic-chic-country wedding (on the cheap)!
About Mrs. Hot Dog

Money Matters.

November 11th, 2009 @ 5:30 pm by Mrs. Hot Dog

Some days I wish Mr. HD and I could just go down to the J.O.P. with a few of our closest friends and family and do the deed there. It would involve so much less stress. But every time my mind circles back to that, I know that deep down I would really regret it. And not just me; I think my whole family would be a little disappointed. We live at least 2 hours away from ANYONE in either of our families, so even though we see a select few once a month, we both have a lot of distant family that we rarely get to visit. We really want this wedding to be like a big family reunion—relaxed, fun, and a chance for our families to meet and blend. But lately it seems as though the money issue is going to be my undoing.

We are on a tight budget. I mean TINY. We’re talking around $5,000. Hopefully less. That’s not to say we won’t be getting some help. My mom bought my wedding dress for $350, thanks to PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com (Thanks Mom!). My dad and step-mom offered to pay for the cake and desserts. And both parties have offered to help with other costs as we tackle them. But the brunt of the wedding costs will be on us. Paper goods, photographer, catering… the big boys. Needless to say, we’re going to have to get creative.

I knew from the get-go that I wanted to hand-craft as many of the details as I could. It’s starting to look like I’m going to get my wish. :)

Another big hurdle for us is going to be sticking to the budget.

I’m also an English major with a serious obsession with alliteration and rhymes. While I’m not keeping America safe, I’m training for half marathons and the Escape from Alcatraz swim. Or moving for the third time this year. Or baking. Or wedding crafting. Or crying about wedding planning. All the while, I’m getting myself into Lucille Ball-esque scrapes and making Jim Carey-esque faces. Our big fat Czech/Baptist/Jewish/Italian wedding is a combination of vintage eclectic, DIY, and little spoonful of sugar from our Event Coordinator. It’s going to be a Norfolk flavored wedding with the verve of an only-daughter-blow-out bash!

*Edited thanks to one of my Lambaids - she said that my attempts at hot pink spray paint for privacy’s sake was sad. Hahaha, she just found herself a new job as my personal privacy painter!

Then in October, Ewe Mother, Lambaid Maid of Honor and a slew of helpers and Lambaids hosted the most beautiful shower. Ewe Mother turned her house into a bona fide tea room with real china tea settings and lots of special touches. In the photograph below, you can see some of the spread and the table where Mr. Lamb’s family and my family mingled over Earl Grey.

I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

Foot Candy

That being said, I’m short—5′2″—fun-sized short. What petite girl doesn’t appreciate the height some heels give her? Even though I rock Chucks most the time, when I wear heels I wear HEELS. I’m not a stranger to the balancing act stilettos. After reading blogs like Green Wedding Shoes and seeing insanely awesome colored shoes like the ones wore by Mrs Cheese and Mrs Toucan, I was inspired.

Lavender Love

November 11th, 2009 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

When it comes to shabby, country chic, I think lavender flowers take the (wedding) cake for reflecting that sensibility. It’s not a flashy, overstated flower; it’s sweet, simple and smells divine.

I thought about using lavender for my bouquet. Something like this:

I do love the idea but it doesn’t really go with our color scheme and it’s not quite what I’m envisioning for my bouquet. It would smell so lovely, though…

Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. Colors!

November 11th, 2009 @ 3:29 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

Selecting our color palette has been an evolutionary process. I’ve really wanted to use shades of green (Mr. Spaniel’s favorite color!), and I think I have finally figured out what I mean by that. :)

I think I’m going with mostly black and white/ivory (damask? paisley?), with flowers and accents in shades of green.

I’ve been really drawn to these bridesmaids’ dresses since I first saw them. I have five girls, who are all different shapes and sizes, and I want to give them options that each will be comfortable in, but that still go well together. I like the tea length, I like the lace. I am not sure about the white/ivory underlay; I might go with black on black.

Some Things That We Have Nailed Down…

November 11th, 2009 @ 2:39 pm by Mrs. Pudding

Our wedding is a go! With the booking of a church and a reception venue, we are officially getting married in July, 2010! It’s exciting and scary all at the same time.

So, here is what we have so far:

We will be getting married at my childhood church. It is a Polish Roman Catholic church, which means that most of the congregation is Polish. There are many churches like this around the Greater Toronto Area, as there is a very large Polish community here:
