I am a self professed “WBJ” (Wedding Blog Junkie). My blog feed list was as long as the browser is tall. I would catch up with my favorite (and there were a lot) blogs daily. I was a virtual sponge of all things related to wedding inspiration. My Salty Pretzel counterpart called it my “wedding p0rn” and I was definitely addicted.
Define Wedding P0rn: “Wedding stories and pictures are like p0rn for those planning their own nuptials.” – Ariel of Offbeat Bride

Looking back I was on a crash course for Wedding Inspiration Hangover (WIH). When WIH set in I fought against it, trying to force myself to stay up on my wedding blog reading. Ultimately I reduced my wedding reading to just Weddingbee* and an occasional check in on some of the DIY blogs. I felt like saying “enough is enough already! How many more ideas can my little brain hold?”

These babies are stamped and sent!
This wedding of ours is turning out to be very non-traditional and we both agreed that we wouldn’t care at all about wedding superstitions. Here are a few that I found that we definitely won’t be following…
1) The groom can’t see the wedding gown before the ceremony -
He’s already seen me in my dress, which is why I had no problem posting pics. I was so excited to show it to him the day I got it and, the way I see it, it’s only fair, as I’ve seen him in his wedding duds!
2) The bride and groom cannot see each other the day of the wedding until the ceremony –
Apparently, the superstition is that the couple will be doomed to a marriage of barrenness, and I’m just gonna go out on a limb here and let fate do its thing with my ovaries. With a sunset wedding, I can’t imagine not being with him the day of, especially considering we’ve paid up the wazoo for every minute that we will be in the Virgin Islands!
3) The bridal party -
Apparently, the bride chooses bridesmaids that are supposed to dress like her to act as a decoy and confuse evil spirits. Um, I’m not worried about those silly evil spirits; I figure they’ll be enjoying the wedding too much to bother with trying to steal my soul. We’re not having a bridal party because we want everyone to have a low-stress trip.

“Add a memorable touch to your wedding with unique favors that match your theme.”
Mr. Spaniel and I aren’t planning on fully combining our resources right away, but a few weeks before we moved in together this past July, we decided open a joint checking account for mutual expenses like rent, utilities, and groceries. This should have been easy, but between the two of us, we have accounts at six different financial institutions (and that doesn’t include our student loans). His direct deposit goes into one account, which he then writes himself a check to transfer to a different bank, and anything he can save moves into an online savings account… and none of those are with banks that I use! (I know this all sounds ridiculous and like a really easy problem to remedy, but we each use the banks that we use for a reason—or many reasons—and it just isn’t that simple to change!)

I already have an Electric Orange checking account and Orange Savings with ING Direct, and I think this would be a good bank to open our joint account with because you can link your account to external accounts, which would solve the problem of Mr. Spaniel has of having to write himself a check every month.

Guess what arrived on our doorstep last night? A very exciting belated engagement present… our dinner plates!
While Mr Trail Mix and I decided not to register for a complete set of fine china, we did feel that a 6-piece set of plates would be a welcome addition to our mish-mash collection of plates, most of which are hand-me-downs from my grandmother. I actually really and truly love the way non-matching plates look in a table setting, so I was pretty sure that registering for an entire set of china would be unnecessary.
But we did want to be able to have at least one nice set of plates for all the fabulous dinner parties we host. (Note: that was sarcasm regarding dinner parties; our studio apartment does not allow us to host dinner parties. But hopefully we will someday.) So, we picked out some beautiful, Portuguese-inspired plates from Williams Sonoma.
I was a little disappointed initially because when we got home after registering, we realized the plates weren’t available online and I really didn’t know if anyone would end up getting them for us. Luckily, one of Mr Trail Mix’s groomsmen’s parents (Holla, Mr and Mrs R!) came through and now we have our lovely blue-and-yellow plates. Ha, yellow and blue… notice a theme here?
Love WS gift wrapping! I have so many of those little pineapple things stored in my craft drawer, waiting for inspiration to strike…

It seems like a pretty common thing. When wedding planning starts, it seems like the first thing that many modern brides do is book an excellent photographer that is out of their budget. After all, the photos are the only part of the wedding day that will survive for years to come. The bride-to-be calmly rationalizes the added expense to her fiance, mother, and anyone who will listen: “We will just scrimp on the videography… or better yet, have a friend tape the wedding.”
Of course, I was no different. And, like most naive brides, I forgot about my plan to save money on videography and started daydreaming about our day being captured by the likes of Still Motion (they are fellow Canadians, after all). I just couldn’t bring myself to trust an uncle or a college roommate with something that I’ll likely use to relive the day when the Post Wedding Trauma hits. However, considering that Still Motion’s commissions range from about 1/4th - 3/4ths of our budget, I knew that there was no amount of rationalizing that could get Mr. Pudding to agree to hire them.
Thus I began my search for a great videographer that would fit into our measly budget.

Now that we’re married, I know I should stop seeing “wedding” everywhere. But I saw these gorgeous photos from the White House State dinner, and my inspiration radar just went up.

The third leg of the dress buying journey took place in Baltimore. Cheeseburger Mom, Mom Burger, Cheeseburger SisterMOH and Sister Burger were all in town, and I was so excited (nervous). I had a lot of the same feelings I had the first time we went out since more people would be there, we were in a new city, etc., but I was so glad that they were there that I kind of forgot those feelings as we set out for the day! I had made appointments at two local bridal shops as well as the David’s Bridal in Baltimore to show everyone my more recent dress successes!
Our first stop was Bridals by Elena. We started by discussing the things that I liked and disliked, as well as the budget. Our consultant also asked me how many dresses I had tried on so far in my experiences. When I said that I thought it was around 50 or so, she was shocked. Apparently this is a pretty large number, and she had in her mind that I was going to be pretty hard to please (who, me?).
She pulled a few dresses that she thought I would like, and she was right, I did like all of them! Unfortunately, their dresses did not have tags, and they did not allow photographs, so I don’t really know much about the first few dresses I tried on.
The one dress I do remember from that store was this gorgeous number by, you guessed it, Essence of Australia!

So you might remember that I was really conflicted about my wedding dress. On one hand, it was exactly what I wanted in a dress, and, on the other hand, it put a little more cleavage on display than I wanted it to.
Okay, so you totally don’t remember, but here are a few posts to get you up to speed: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. And here’s me trying on the dress (in a larger size than I actually purchased) picture:

Because I felt so conflicted, I stuffed the dress into a closet right after I got it… and I waited. I waited until it was pretty much too late to get another dress. Maybe I was trying to tell myself that I wanted to wear the one I already had?

Just in case any of you questioned my dedication to Weddingbee, Mr. Star and I made our annual trip to Macy’s to add to our Christmas tree ornament collection (hey, these things take work when you want to put up your own tree right after moving out of a dorm room!) and this is one of the things we left with:

Fellow Weddingbee addicts: feel free to go get one at your local Macy’s now, so I don’t feel like the only weirdo.
Do you ever look at something bee-themed and immediately think, “Weddingbee!” or is it just me?
Lambster isn’t really a ring person. He even jokingly asked if we could exchange wedding watches. I was on board, but in the end we decided on a ring as our token of love and affection. I gave you a sneak peek here, but that was just the beginning of my little photo shoot. My engagement ring must have told the wedding rings about her shoot, because the wedding rings just pleaded with me to get in on that action.
El Lambo’s ring is a solid 4mm 14k white gold comfort fit band. Plain vanilla for him. Mine, on the right, was custom etched to match the antique wheat pattern on my engagement ring.
When it came time to start thinking about a date and a place, we didn’t really know where to start. I’ve been to Sandals resorts before and they are truly amazing, and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Unfortunately, Sandals was out because it’s adults only, and we have 2 kids joining us. We looked into their sister company, Beaches, which is family friendly, but the choices were limited since they only have resorts in Turks and Caicos and Jamaica.
Most people would think this shouldn’t be a problem. Come on—Caribbean, tropical paradise, crystal blue waters and tons of sun? It sounds great, but they both have marriage residency requirements. If you get married in either place, you have to “live” there for 1-4 days. We kind of wanted to have the wedding early and spend the rest of the trip as newlyweds.
So, we thought, where else could we go in the Caribbean without a ton of restrictions? The US Virgin Islands of course. I’ve been to St. Thomas on a cruise stop once before and it was gorgeous.
Now, we had 3 islands to choose from…
